... there's warez samples?!
There's a whole newsgroup dedicated to them, at least 3 IRC channels, and back in the day I remember groups that released nothing BUT sample disks.
Edit: I should have said "used to be 3 IRC channels" since I have no idea whether they still exist, and no desire to hunt them down.
(Man there's warez everything)I have a warez e-peen.

(Hijack)
I would probably save up for a better car.
That is one smooth hoopty. I'd throw some gold rims on it, maybe lower the suspension another 6 inches, and put some dope-ass subs in the trunk.

I only compress the kick drum for more punch. I think the rest have a much more organic feel to them when I leave the dynamics alone.

Next time I run across $200, I'm probably going back for it.
Is that what Ibanez RG series go for these days? Shit, mine was $850 back in the day (on sale for $450). Then again, I've noticed MSRP on guitar stuff is always much higher than the actual price...probably so music stores can have perpetual "sales"...

I smell a lot of warez users in here - so who among us is honest?
This is getting off-topic, but after pirating Fruityloops/FL Studio since version 1, I finally broke down and bought it last week. For what it can do and how much I use it, it's damn cheap. Lifetime updates are another incentive.
My guitar is also warez. MWAHAHAHA!

the neck snapped in half when I left it on the floor, and accidentally stepped on it.
GAH!
Saying that to a thread full of guitarists is like saying "yeah, she kicked me right in the nuts and I think something burst" to any random male.
As mentioned in the other gear thread, I have an Ibanez RG560 (signed by the guitarists from Carcass), ART SGX2000 effects processor, custom jumbo acoustic, Shure SM57 mic, some Crate amp, and Guitar Rig 2.

In the order I think of them:
Main instruments:
FL Studio 6
Ibanez RG560 guitar
Custom jumbo acoustic guitar
ART SGX 2000 guitar effects processor
Shure SM57 mic
Favorite plugins:
Fxpansion BFD (drum module)
Rob Pappen Blue (synth)
NI Guitar Rig 2
Absynth 3

Is it ok to put nylon strings on it?
They won't damage it, if that's what you mean. Throw some on and make sure they don't buzz.
And it needs a bridge replacement, but I can't find anywhere to buy one, anyone know where?Look up "guitar repair" in the yellow pages.

Omg, i hate those top 10 lists.
Personally, I think impelliterri is better than malmsteen, and so is gilbert. Batio is pretty insane too.
Well, Malmsteen just sucks...so boring. I was just pointing out the hair.

Sounds good, but if you don't have hair like these guys, it's not shred:

I'm looking for a couple of piano arrangers

I have a veritable graveyard of over 20-25 project files of failed songs and WIPs.
I've got about 60-70 of those song orphans, and I think soc has an assload as well. Sometimes what gives me inspiration is when I get a new VST and play around with the settings, then have to throw some drums in to make it sound better...then a track pops out. Hit up KVR and grab any instruments/demos you can get your hands on to see if that method works for you.
-steve
PS: I've gone back to old songs maybe 3-4 times now and ended up completing them just by swapping instruments out and liking the sound better.
Edit: I've also never "allowed" myself to have musician's block, even if all I was churning out was utter shit. Work on 2 or 3 songs at a time. Force yourself to make a song using nothing but FL default samples and presets, but try to make it sound good enough that people won't say "default FL, yo!" Go find some drum tablature and steal it, building old songs into new electronica (one of my favorite original songs is built entirely around James Brown's "Cold Sweat" drum tab). Download a tracker and make a song or two with that instead of FL. Don't be afraid to get out of a rut and do things differently. Replace all your drum samples with Folgers Crystals...er, I mean random sound files. Remix older songs of yours that you do like (I'm doing this right now with one). Get a tape recorder and make your own weird samples, then use them. Do a remix comprised entirely of samples of you hitting your desk, rattling silverware in a glass, dragging heavy shit across the rug, and whacking metal objects together.
If you don't find something inspiring in that pile of stuff, become a monk and renounce technology.

. . . . . . . .I have a large chunk of the work I did for Silent Hill Static Aversion (CotMM and me), but I'm still working on it at the moment. If anyone wants the scraps let me know, otherwise I'll post it when it's finished.

Windows edit will open binary files, but not in a hex-edit format, unless I missed something.

a drum machine such as Guru. I plan on buying Guru this year.
Guru's not really a drum machine, but more of a rhythm builder (i.e., loops) from what I can tell. I'd go with FXpansion BFD instead. Aside from my sequencer (FL Studio), BFD is my favorite piece of software ever.

I've registered at the new forums but still need access to the WIP board there, if you guys want to look into it.

MiniDisc recorder. One of the older ones, before Sony started cramming DRM shit into them. Mine works great.

This said, I also have not-so-good news. A lot of people have jumped off right now, which leads to a staggering 5 songs to be taken right now. Let's hope replacement will come soon
Is Sinewav still on for track 1-02? A few pages ago he said he wouldn't be able to do it and I don't think I've seen anything from him since then.

Checking in...
I have another WIP but it's short and I don't know where I'm going with it yet, so I hesitate to submit it until I do. I thought I had some good ideas for the two Sacrifice songs but I keep procrastinating because I just don't know what I want to do with them. I do have some ideas I'm playing with, though.

So far I've gotten about 4 personal requests to fix other peoples' songs (some of these requests look like people who found this post through google and didn't try the work themselves). Please don't do that. I'm happy to do it for the people I've already said "sure, I'll look at it" to, but note that everything I can possibly do to fix a file has been outlined in the first post of this thread, and anything I can do, you can do yourself using the same methods I did.
I will add to this post if I discover anything else about the file format, but when a file's too corrupted to recover you've just got to rely on backups.

We were going to keep the whole thing secret until the day it was released, but I figured it would be cool to give everyone a heads up. We might be done in less than 6 months - I'm not making any promises until every song is done and uploaded and the website is good to go. Keep your eyes peeled
Yeah, thanks. Now we have to wait 6 months for what sounds like an incredible project (I'm not even a fan of Nobuo, but this remixer lineup destroys). Have you no heart, sir?

i just ordered some saddle blocks
Next time you lose one, trim a small piece of sturdy nylon or plastic off of somethine else and go ghetto. Mine's (Ibanez RG560) been like that for about 10 years now. Actually the nylon's pretty much worn away entirely, so now it's just the screw holding the string on.
Eh, save yourself $8, at least.
Cerrax: plug a known good cable into a distortion pedal and run a known good cable from that to your amp. With everything on and loud you should be able to hold the insulated pard of the cable with one hand, touch the very tip of it with your other, and hear a well-defined pop and hum. You can do it without the distortion too but it's not going to be as loud. If you hear nothing, the problem is with your amp. If you hear it, check your guitar's jack for broken wires.

Awesome, thanks for the help. Amusingly, I was searching KVR for something else yesterday and didn't think to search for this.

I've been playing with Guitar Rig 2 lately (it rules!) and I was wondering if I could use the guitar signal to play VSTi synths on my system. Obviously it's not that easy because you can't expect a line signal to play well with something (e.g., Kontakt 2) that has well-defined key maps for multilayer samples, but GR2 has a nifty pitch-sensing module which can be used to affect other parameters.
Does anyone know of a generic pitch-sensor that will output MIDI control notes to drive actual VST instruments? It would obviously be limited to mono input, but I can think of lots of fun things to do with something like that (think Roland guitar synth from the early 90s and the good use Pestilence made of it).

Question: How do YOU start your remixes?
in Music Composition & Production
Posted
Two main methods. The biggest one is when I come up with a melody or beat in my head and need to get it down on paper (in the case of guitar music) or in FL Studio. My other method is when I'm tweaking VST presets or writing patches and accidentally do something that sounds cool, then expand on it.
But when you're talking specifically about remixes, there's a third method I've used with some of the remixes I have here. It's the "start out writing an original song and notice it sounds kind of like a Castlevania melody, then jack the song into a new direction" method.
