  1. Tekken... Ah, the good old days... Been an avid fan since Tekken 2 on PS1, but haven't played it after Tekken 5. Actually, once upon a time I was working on Paul's theme from TTT, but never finished it, and eventually my hard drive crashed so that WIP is irretrievable. Hmm, now that I think about it, I actually was thinking about remixing Xiaoyu's theme from TTT or the intro theme from TTT. I guess I made it very obvious what my favorite Tekken soundtrack is...

In any case, if someone does end up coming up with a competition or a project, count me in.

  2. I remember some of your early works from around 2005-ish, and the production work on this one feels rather mint and more pristine than anything that I had heard from you prior to then. :)

In regards to arrangement, it manages to chop up the source melody into something more developed and structure them in a way that retains the familiarity of the source but also forms the basis for interpretation along the way. The drum work at 1:25 was a huge highlight, showing some strong details with the gate work and switch ups during this transition.

This trick was repeated moreso past the 3 minute mark, though I may have to be blunt though that if it didn't happen there then the mix may somehow have outstayed its welcome. So I got to say nice call and solid work overall!

Assuming that you're coming over to London on Saturday, it'll be a pleasure to see you ambient :)

Thanks Rexy! Sorry couldn't make it to London that day. How did the meet up go? I will definitely make it next time!

  3. This sounds really good. I don't know about the arrangement since I am not familiar with the original, but production and overall composition are very solid. Honestly, considering that dubstep remix that got posted recently (Super Mario RPG "Big Bad Koopa Dubstet") your mix should definitely get posted - it is by far better than that mix.

  4. I expected to hear a hip hop track, considering the title and all. But regardless, I think this sounds really good. I am not a huge fan of chiptuney tracks, but I am really digging this one.

Also, for some odd reason the main melody is making me think of Linkin Park, I can totally hear Chester singing to it in my head. So, perhaps, someone should consider making a nu-metal remix of this track?

  5. Awesome track, really great ideas here. Makes me think of Skrillex's First of the Year. A lot.

General comments to improve the mix - the piano could sound fuller, a bit more compression on it, maybe slight distortion, and more EQ. I am not 100% sold on the bass notes that the piano is playing, maybe after you do some processing on the piano overall, it will sound better, but I would actually take them out. Also, you could glitch your piano patterns up a little, to make them more interesting. Finally, the structure of the track is very A,B,A,B. I think if you spice up and introduce some slight variation in the second verse, as well as in the ending, this will sound a lot better.

Awesome job! Polish this up and it will be a great track that will stand on its own and will also make a great addition to the site.

  6. I think that you have too much reverb going on in this track. Like DjMystix, I also think that your bassline can be more imaginative. As for the bass guitar sample itself - I think it can be processed a little more, since right now, because of the simple pattern and a very vanilla sample, your bassline sounds a bit lo-fi. Another gripe (more of a personal preference, actually) that I have is the intro - it is pretty much identical to the original. Sure, it pays homage to the source, but doesn't do it in an especially creative way.

Still, I like your arrangement ideas overall. I think the track is almost there, you just need to fine tune the reverb and work on that bassline.

  7. Hey guys, thanks for your feedback! I think the main issue with that synth is that the automation is not perfectly configured for the phrases. I think it will work better once it has been tweaked a little. But I definitely am not ready to throw it out of the window just yet. As for the source not being apparent until later, I just tend to obscure the source melody more than many others do, but some part of it is always there. In this one, a part of the bassline from the original was adapted to play the lead in the beginning. However, I can see how this creates some issues with the flow of the mix, and alluding the actual theme from the start might make everything come together neater. Thanks for bringing that to my attention. As for real instruments, I didn't really envision using any in this mix in the beginning (other than the sampled guitars/strings), so I will probably stay away from using them this time around.

The throaty vocalish synth is still a maybe. It's quirky, and that's why I like it. But if I can get actual vocoded vocals in its place, I might go with that instead. Any volunteers?

  8. Alright, here we go. This is a wip of the Sakura theme from Street Fighter Alpha 2. It is kind of a remix of a remix - I used a few samples from Marc Star's remix of this. Actually, there are a couple of small samples for another 3-4 OCR remixes.

This mix is obviously not finished, but I just wanted to get some feedback on what people think works, what doesn't work, and how I can improve on transitions. The throaty synth might stay, it might not stay, depends if I can find someone who can do lyrics and vocals in place of it.

    Thanks!

  9. Street Fighter done Tekken style sounds better than a mix, it sounds like a fix! To me, Tekken, starting from Tekken 3, has the best soundtracks of all fighting games. If you guys haven't yet checked out the promo soundtrack for Tekken Tag 2, do yourself a favor and look them up on youtube (Remei already linked TTT2 version of T5's Moonlit Wilderness).

Just so happens, I am actually remixing Sakura's theme right now as well. I am doing it in a different style though, so we won't be oversaturating OCR with similar versions of this theme. This is an awesome theme really, and Jewbei also had a WIP (http://tindeck.com/listen/pntf) of it up some time ago.

Well then, onto your mix. I like what you have going so far. One critique that I would have at this stage is that your drums sounds weak, especially if you mean them to be Tekken-inspired. They need to sounds fuller and pack more punch. Also, you need to have some fills in there too - they really like those chopped/stutter drum fills in Tekken. Piano is another touchy subject on ocr, but I will leave that alone for now. Fix them drums, first, and I will comment more later. Good job so far!
