  1. If you use itunes, Armin van Buuren has a really popular podcast called A State of Trance, which I've found some great artists from. In particular I'd recommend
    ,
    ,
    and
    .

Could be a "tomayto"/"tomahto" issue, but I prefer Trance Around The World podcast by Above & Beyond. Plus their new album, Group Therapy, is pretty tight. Here is a sample:

I also have a soft spot for Alphazone (a bit old, but still sounds alright to me):

PVD is not bad, was actually at his set in NYC a couple of weeks ago, good for partying, but I don't know if it would be the same for just listening.

  2. Ok, so how spending 3 billion hours in a fantasy world is better than spending that time solving problems in the real world? I think it is relatively well-established that there needs to be something rather tangible at stake for people to react to a simulated situation in the same way that they would react to a real one. Reactions of people in a simulation of a world without oil tells us only one thing - what people's reactions are within the boundaries of that simulation, and assuming that it is a good indicator of their behavior in the real world is not only useless but dangerous. Gaming is just entertainment and, in its best instances, art. It's an end product, consumption of which takes considerable resources (time/brainpower) that could be spent for better use elsewhere. This is exactly why we see these efforts to convert this time into something of value; however, I am highly skeptical about the prospect of such conversion being realistic.

Anyhow, typing this out on my berry is a pain. So I might elaborate later.

  3. I was 15 at the time, and I loved FFX and thought it'd continue in the same way and bring back Tidus. Don't make fun of me. :-( I can't take it!

Why'd they show him swimming up at the end if he was gone AHH FORGET IT

If they made Marle the main character of CT: 2 and had them all dressing skimpy and singing pop songs, I would be pissed. :-(

When I was playing FFX, I remember wanting a prequel starring Braska, Auron, and Jecht.

  4. I use Reason pretty much exclusively. I do resort to using Acid if I need to tweak vocals or other loops/samples sometimes, but I never really rewire the two. I see that everyone here is mentioning Record. Got a question for those of you who use it - what are the benefits of using it if you don't record vocals/live instruments? Are the mastering tools a lot better than just reason on its own?

  5. I was under the impression that there was no stinger at the end because it's not tied into the same universe as the Iron Man/Hulk/Thor/Cap America/Avengers series.

Which is a good idea, really.

Your reasoning would be correct, except for the fact that there was one in X3.

Both that, and the fact that they can't really tease us with what comes next, since it's either 1) an unlikely sequel to the prequel that takes place before X1 or 2) X1.

It hasn't always been a teaser for what is to come next, as you have seen in the recent Marvel movies such as Thor and Iron Man. Two examples right off the top of my head are 1) once again, X3, and 2) Daredevil.

  6. Ok boss, let me do this, I will listen to the track and jot down my comments. Take them with a grain of salt as some might just be personal preferences. Do as I do, listen to all feedback, and implement what you think will work best for your mix.

0:00-0:10 - this stretch is pretty weak, so at first you think you are in for a couple of minutes of noobie stuff, but it sets the perfect stage for the next section.

0:10-0:37 - awesome automation going on there, lots of movement on the synths, good way to reinterpret the arp from the original. Kick and snare could be more powerful. See if you can sidechain/duck a couple of instruments, and definitely sidechain the bass, this will create even more of a pumping feel for the mix.

0:38 - I really think that lead cheapens the entire mix. You have a lot of badassery going on right before it, and when I get to this part I feel a little cheated. You are doing a good job with changing up the pattern and having some slides there. But the synth is just uninteresting. Try something different, maybe a more layered distorted electro lead.

0:38-1:38 - not a lot of comments on this section. Except for the lead synth, I think it is generally good. You could have some kind sweep or some other effect leading into the transition at 1:39.

1:39-2:08 - awesome section. Great automation, stuttering, and all that good stuff. However, you should definitely do more on the drums here. Some stuttering, short fills, drops will really spice this section up even more. This actually applies to the mix overall - drums are lacking variety and energy. I know, this is mostly a "four to the floor track" (btw, good job taking a 3/4 track and making it 4/4), but you need to throw some interesting percussive elements here and there.

2:08-2:39 - another solid section. Same complaint though - drums. You could really use some fills or snare rolls or stutter effects when transitioning between section. This will build on anticipation and the feeling of urgency and then release once you transition to the next section.

2:39-3:15 - this is a cool section, but, this is what I mean by minimalistic. You have drums, bass, and lead here. Drums are ok, but nothing special, just your typical 4/4 beat. Bass, while notation is cool, the synth is not fat and saturated enough. And once again, that lead is also very basic. My bet is, the judges will probably have similar comments.

3:16-3:24 - you could total do something crazy with the drums here, keeping it 4/4 in this section makes it sound lazy and boring.

The outro is a bit weak, but I wouldn't worry about it that much.

So, if I were you, I would focus on the following:

    - Play with sidechaining and compression.

    - Make your drums more interesting, add some fills, add some stuttering, and make your kick sound phatter.

    - Same goes for your bass, make it phatter. If you were using Reason I would have said use scream 4 (a distortion unit) and some compression on top of it.

    - Fix that lead.

    - You need to add more percussive and other sound effects. These will spice up your mix.

I hope that you find this at least somewhat helpful.

  7. I really really like what you have going on here, but since I tend to be conservative in my expectations, I would say that if you submit it as it is, you will get "No, Resubmit" from the judges. You have a lot of minimalistic elements and parts in this track and while you can get away with that sometimes, it is likely that in your particular mix it will be seen as a weakness. Also, your mix is lacking pump/phatness - maybe well-implemented compression on individual synths and overall mix will do the trick.

Having said that, I think you should probably submit the mix. You will get more specific feedback from the judges. And hell, maybe they will love all that crazy cool automation and LFO action you have going on and the mix will get accepted as is.

  8. First of all, love that link generated on tindeck - rugz, pretty cool.

Are you thinking about eventually submitting this to the panel? I really like the ideas and the energy of the track. It is definitely not yet ready for submission, as it is probably a bit too straight-forward by OCR standards, but it is already very enjoyable. Please polish it and finish it! This one really has a lot of potential.

  9. Eilios, nice to see people working on more electro house around here.

One issue that I have with this mix is the EQ. I actually listened to the mix before reading all the comments, and from the beginning I was thinking "oh neat, eilios is playing with the frequency filter, he is gonna open it up any minute and the mix is going to kick into full gear." But that moment never came - right now it sounds like all the elements from the intro have highs and mids completely killed. Normally, that kind of sound builds anticipation towards those frequencies being slowly filtered in, but after listening to the mix in its entirety, I don't think that was your intention. Add some high or mid freqs to your bass, to give it a bit more edge. Also, one trick in electro percs, if you skip high hats at the end of every measure in some sections, it will make your beat sound a bit more jumpy. Your other synths sound a bit dry/simple, some more verb or delay may solve this problem. Some more compression on the track and maybe some sidechained elements would also help to give the mix a bit more of a pumping feel.

I think you have good arrangement ideas, you just need to work on improving your production.

  10. Your warnings sure were enough but I still wasn't prepared for this. The synth is "dangerous" at this time. You're also right about background instruments being too loud.

Count me as another victim of underestimating how painful that synth might be. I don't know what scarred me more, the synth or the Sonic rape scene on the remixer's soundcloud profile.

Seriously though, please tone this stuff down, it's way loud and obnoxious right now.

  11. This is pretty fucking awesome! Love the beats and that bass synth is soooo... dirty and in-your-face, especially in the intro. Glitching is well done too. I think the mix gets a bit overcrowded in the very last section, and I would have loved there to be more section where that awesome bass was exposed more. But this is a minor gripe.

We need more of this type of stuff! Dain, you haven't posted since 2009, what's the holdup?
