Personally, I recommend a pair of Sennheiser HD 600s. I own a pair and have to say that they have the best sound i've heard. They do run a bit steep... (about $250). I have also heard that they're a bit bright, but I havent run into that.

Well, it really wasnt a graintable synth, but I was able to find "plugsound" which is a granular synthesizer. I also found "Neokiller-II." And a buzroom limiter.

Thanks man. I was able to find a couple good ones.

Hey guys, I recently got Ableton 5.0 and I really want to use it for some new synthesizers and such. Since I have basically just used Reason for synths I have no idea what kind of VST to get. Can anyone point me in the direction of a free vsti resembling (at least loosely) the maelstrom or something like that? Also, a good limiter is second on my "to get" list, but I cant find one I like. Any help is greatly appreciated.

I have the opposite problem. I keep working and getting more and more money, and have no idea what to do with it.
Stuff it all in bag and give it to me. We're both in Canada, can't be that hard
Yeah, same here! Except for the Canada part...
I happened to get Ableton Live 5.0 AND EWQLSO Gold! They both kick ass, even though I had to pay half of the EWQLSO... 'Twas expensive. Hopefully going to make my first OCRemix with them... (along with my other stuff)

Yeah, thats the best way to do it. Keep most of the synth-type stuff to Reason...

Reason doesn't really support audio files directly. In order to get the sound files into reason, you need to create an NN-XT or NN-19 and drop the file into the sampler. Reason doesn't record audio either, so you'll have to record in another program and put it into reason's samplers (NN-XT, NN-19) and trigger it via midi.

Static rave- I think what your problem is with the bass is the fact that you have a lot of the bass coming from EQ boosts instead of the bass synth. Usually you should tend to use EQ to sculpt the sound, not create it. The way I mastered it (since its an .rps I can't send it to you) I took the master bass level down from around 6 to about 1.1. I also took the bass EQ down some as well. The bass should usually stay behind a bit instead of taking up the whole mix. Another thing to keep in mind is that your master mix down should be about equal in high and low frequencies, the people who like bass will boost their bass knobs and the people who like treble will boost those; don't try to force feed them... Anywho, on to the lead, I usually put my lead through a unison set to about 50 dry; enough to get a little width, but won't sound soft. I tend to use mirror synths to add to the backing of some of my synths, which might help with adding depth to your synth. Also, if you patch a Scream into the Oscillator output and Audio input (Filter A, Filter it will stand out more. Otherwise, it is very well done. Keep it up!
I'll comment on under the ice after class...

This is great! It has to be one of my favorites of yours. Jethro and Vash at the Fair is probably bumped to second. I'm usually not too into folk music that much and this still is one of my faves. Well, I'm rambling now, needless to say, I like it. A lot.

This has been answered a lot... Its no, unless you have a Rewire host that DOES do tempo changes, you can not have Reason do a tempo change by itself.
-
Just an FYI, you can automate both of those without the combinator... I've done both quite a few times.
-
I would also like to know if I can get the AKAI drums from someone.
As for whether a malstrom or subtractor is better:
They are basically two different kinds of synthesis, which, just as any other synthesizer, makes them have a similar sound, no matter what oscillators you use. However, Malstroms are better than subtractors for making complex sounds with crazy modulations going on. It also (to me) has a more processed, guitar amp-sound on average. However, you can make just about any kind of sound with the malstrom; it just depends on how well you use the parameters.
Subtractors use a simpler way to make sounds and are therefore good at bass and other kinds of relatively simple, but strong sounds. But it all depends on how you use the different LFOs and such to give you a completely different sound and you can still make some pretty complex sounds with it. FX modules also change a lot of what makes both of them sound all alike, which is my main way of changing their sound.
EDIT: wow, I really didn't write that well... My bad.

It might just be easier to sequence your drums in the track sequencer and not in the redrum's pattern thing. That's how I usually do it anyway. It will keep things simpler.
That might be the best move... dang this is gunna be more work than I thought.
Ok then. I've got another question revolving around the same project. When the song is in 4/4, I've got the tempo at 120 bpm (which is right where I want it). But when I go into 6/8 time, the song feels way too slow at 120. I'm thinkin' 135 or 140 might do the trick, but is there any way to change the tempo in the middle of the song?
Nope. Not unless you have another host program such as ACID or something that can do it. Thats one of the biggest hits in Reason is the lack of an automated tempo change.

Can anyone host them for me? I just have a soundclick account...

This is great! I absolutely love this remix!! It is so different than any other video game remix I've ever heard. The best part is that the vocals are very very good along with the very well-done production of the instruments. Great work!

This is some seriously sweet-tastic stuff. The entire track is so damn polished in thrashy goodness I almost most wet myself. You are very damn good at what you do. The only teeny-weeny beef i had was that you couldn't really hear the theme in the beginning. Hell, I don't care, it still kicks so much ASS!

You can't change tempo in reason. However, if you use an alternate program and rewire it into Reason you can change tempo.
On a separate note, the most I've ever learned from reason is by looking at .rps. You can go in and look how to do a certain effect that someone has used in their song. SGX has rps and rsn files for download on his site (how about updates, eh SGX? ). I can also contribute my rps files if anyone wants them. I have done some pretty crazy stuff that I would be willing to share (Not to toot my own horn ). Good luck.

Its the loss in the computer-synthesizer. The attack isn't what would make the synth lag. Go into "edit"-"preferences" then go to the MIDI output or something like that and it should have a lag between the synth and the computer. It usually is because the computer is slow and needs some more think time to process the information. Personally, I don't use a synth to input the notes, so I could be wrong since its never come up for me, but you could try it.
I have a question of my own... Does anyone know of a good place to find a mastering FAQ. I've looked at the propellerhead site and a few others and haven't found anything. Im having problems with my master coming out too clipped...
-
This is some sweet stuff djp. I really don't listen to much funk, but after all of the great coverage by you, I think i'm gonna go find some. Great Job!
-
You might also want to mess with the attack to keep them sounding more realistic. Having a nice bow in your strings can have great effect.
-
This is a great track. I really enjoy all of your creative sidestepping in the main melody. Im really looking forward many more remixes from you! That sax is especially great. very well done!!!

Anyway, I have been trying to do this for so long and cant figure out how the hell i can do it. Does anyone know how to make the effect that BT, Hybrid and OS/2 use where it sounds like the whole song gets filtered and a Fwoosh sound engulfs the whole thing. I dont really know how to explain it, but its used in BTs Godspeed at 3:27. Hybrid does it a few times (I cant really remember in what songs). Any help is greatly appreciated.
Can you post a sample?
Not really, thats copyrighted material and I dont even have a place to host it even if I didnt care that it was copyrighted. I also cant show you my mock-up of it because i dont know how to do it. I wish i could explain it better...
Argitoth, why are you linking to a site that has nothing to do with reason? Id like to see the video, but it isnt on that page...
-
As for Argitoth's question, I've been trying to find out how to do that for a while, but in the end, i think its just easier to go in and change the notes individually.

Reason is incredible, Im not sure how it sounds MIDI-ish (plinks and planks instead of a flowing sound, Human LS ), but I would recommend listening to Charlie Clouser's "Four Notes" song to cure what ails ya. If it still sounds Midi-ish, its either you or your soundcard.
