  1. I really don't like loop-based composition and the limitation on the use of time signatures, and I'm not a fan of piano roll either.

I'm not calling FLStudio God's program here, but there is no need to make loop based composition unless you want to be lazy, and you can make music in the key of Z if you wanted to (I made a song that changes keys every four chords). The only thing holding you back from getting FLStudio is your dislike of piano roll (personally I prefer sheet music over piano roll, but I refuse to learn a new program after almost a year of using FLStudio).

    So yeah.../useless relevant post

Slight correction. He said time signatures, not key signatures. And yes, when compared to a sequencer with built-in music notation, FL is a bit more tricky in terms of getting your changes in. Possible, but tricky.

Ok, so now my post is entirely irrelevant.

Edit: yeah, so now this means nothing.

  3. No soc. You definitely can get something out of using 24 bit samples and dithering to 16. Because of the way dithering works you still can get that increase in fidelity. Is the difference huge? That's arguable, but there's something to be said for recording in 24bit and dithering down anyway.

You did Impulse Prime in 32 bit float, did you not?

Sorry, just a random question sort of relating to the problem.

  4. Well, let's see here...

Those strings are a little too slow for what you need to do, same with the synth that comes in.

It's very predictable in progression...you should throw a nice minor chord in as your third chord. Just for kicks. It could just be me, I'm a sucker for odd chord progressions.

Personally, it's not something I would listen to. It's kind of cluttered in terms of what sounds you use...they kind of clash with each other. There is too much stuff in the foreground, not enough in the background.

    Hope that helps!

  5. Can you change your sig, man that's gonna cause epileptic seizures for some people.

But the differences between the formats usually are the size of the samples per the programming of that format, and the programming/keyswitch (availability or not), etc type features.

But the sample/audio content should be the same. I'd go for the akai format though.

Aw, but that's the point. :( Haha, it's ok though, I'll find something a bit calmer...

    Thanks for the info, too.

  6. The channel is primarily going to be documentry/reveiw based with talkshows and skitshows (with some community programming) from what iv been told, so i'm thinking chilled/ambient jazzy-type peice would fit...?

Anyone have an suggestions for structure? its always been my weak point, i tend to bring out melodies a bit too strongly, and i dont think thats going to be good in this situation.

I would go listen to the BBC's theme. Thats the British Broadcasting Commision, to all you Americans. Their theme is all synthy and stuff. They use it all the time, from 10 seconds between programs to several minute long background music.

Either that, or something like the Mazda commercials (I think those are the ones) With the very soft drums, very light, thin, reverby piano (with many neutral chords) and the bass slighty louder, which sounds something like www.sf2midi.com 's "upright bass" sample.

    Good luck.

  7. Just another quick question, I imported a MIDI file to FL6. But when I play it, it doesn't play at all. My volume on everything else is on full, and it works, but not when I play the MIDI track. Can anyone tell me what is wrong?

I think the last time OverCoat answered this he said Tools > Enable MIDI Output. I don't know though, I've tried it and it didn't work. I just send samples to the channels to get sound.

  8. What all this boils down to is personal opinion.

Audity: There is no need to ask for opinions and then try to defend yourself. You want to start a site like that? Start it, don't worry about other people's opinions. Maybe some audiophiles will tag along with you and help you in the making of the site and other things for it. But remember: you will be seeding the files yourself, along with maybe a few other people. This is going to take up your computer's speed and you may constantly get comments like "Can somebody please seed this file" and such like that.

But go right ahead and make it. If the idea doesn't take off, then use the site for something else.

    Good luck!

  9. Don't worry, there ARE free sequencers/plugin hosts!

Buzz and Psycle are two popular tracker-style hosts. There are a number of other trackers that can load in audio plugins as well (I think ModPlug, at least, and check out BeroTracker, if I remember correctly). Not sure if the free Tracktion NFR offer ended, but if it didn't, that's supposedly a great app (especially for audio).

I would recommend energyXT as inexpensive, full-featured, innovative, and astoundingly great, but if FLS Express is too expensive then energyXT is only a little less :(

Also, don't worry about being 15 - both of my mixes currently on the site were posted when I was 15, and I'm not exactly an anomaly (see blake perdue and darkcecil13 and finalhazard and Chavous:P)

Recently turned 16, but most of my mixes date back to the first months of me being 15. Wow, there ARE a lot of young mixers here...
