  1. Fuck the Poh-lice, right?

Well, until someone's trying to break into your apartment.

Or your sister's been missing for 72 hours.

Or there's a huge traffic accident on the highway.

Or there's a pederast who keeps staring at your little boy.

Or you need to report your stolen vehicle.

    Or someone's stolen your identity.

Or there's a domestic across the street with guns drawn.

Hmm... law enforcement doesn't seem to be so bad in that context.

Anyway, I think I'm going to be honoring our veterans and currents this Monday. Thats what I'm gonna do.

I'd rather be in the ghetto than a block away from the police station. And I'm white.

  2. arrgh.. I think they're going to make the game more child-friendly.

I like subtle things. Look at your player card in RBY. He looks like some little punk with no idea what he's doing.

Then look at your GSC trainer card. That son of a bitch means some business.

That scan makes him look like some little punk again.

Maybe they'll shed some light on the Unown ruins.. I still never really understood them. Something about erecting a statue or something.

  3. I think preserving the original energy and feel of the original track is a great idea.

Why not add some of your own ideas, while preserving the four-on-the-floor march feeling?

I thought the little bit at 2:31 was a little awkward, because the stop-and-go thing kinda obliterates the smooth marching feeling.

also, crescendo, crescendo, crescendo! Make it loud! :D

I think you should add your own stuff to this, and get it onto the site.

What are the rules regarding movie music? It's mostly a video game arrangement anyway..

  4. It doesn't really feel like a march to me. I'd recommend not going over 120bpm if you're going to create a march. I personally like 100bpm if I'm going for that sort of sound. I want to be able to see the procession happening in front of me while I listen. Synesthetize me!

The eighth notes are fine to use, but make sure that you give the quarter-notes time to stand out. Each beat needs to be strong, and the first of the four needs to be even stronger.

Personally, I like things to be a bit louder too. The melody was often just a single instrument playing single notes, as was the accompaniment.

I keep getting into more of my personal preference rather than objective suggestions, but I'll say just one more thing. Listen to Scrap Brain. The first two bars create a motive. The next two are just transpositions of that same motive. See if you can notice in the 5th bar (third alteration to that motive), the first note really brings out the minor-mode in the music. Accent that shit too! Milk these opportunities as much as you can and send the chills down my back.

  5. I'm ecstatic to see these remakes because Crystal was my favorite fo the series (I'm slightly afraid I'll buy Gold or Silver, and find that my favorite pokemon can't be found because I've bought the wrong version..)

But I do agree with a portion of Damned's lamentations.. I hated that three versions of the same game would come out. Trading to get specific monsters is pretty dumb, and is the only reason for the multiple versions. But I don't want to miss out on segments of plot just because I opted for one version over another. Just make the Yellow/Crystal/Emerald/Platinum version of the game; do a little extra testing to make sure all the little extra features have been added.

Can I get a list of Gold/Silver specific monsters, so I make sure I get the right one for me? Will the monster differences be pretty much the same?

  6. Gold/Silver were my favorites from the pokemon series, but still... What are they goign to add? More color?

When it comes to remakes, what I look forward to most are the enhancements added to the soundtrack.

    G/S/C had amazing music.

I remember humming Ruins of Alph with a friend of mine when I was in Elementary school.

Here I am in College, and now I can probably map the whole thing out by ear.

    Time flies.

  7. The dungeon theme from Zelda 1 is quite short.. might I suggest adding a little original variation to it?

That's my only gripe. It's a little dull from a compositional standpoint, but I think everything else is perfect.

You might get some people complaining that the melody muds in with the everything else a little bit, but quite frankly I really like that effect. This sucker is radiating with metal.

I eagerly await your next piece.

  8. it's not really a stereotype when it's mostly correct

Sure it is. I'd say that's one of the ways they propagate.

It only irks me when it's not in joke form. To add fuel to that, whenever it's not in joke form, usually the one being a bigot is also proves to be an idiot, themself..

It's annoying, but I myself would be a hypocrite if I didn't just learn to live with it. Serious business, you know.

  9. But where the hell does the Ameri-hate come from? Where did you pull that out of your arse?

Why the viciousness? Did I insult you? If so, I apologize. But I would like to know how I insulted you.

I'm not insulted by the America fat and stupid comments, but similarly, the sheer ubiquity got annoying. It could have been anyone else, and I still would have said "Yeah, black, watermelon, I GET IT."

It just so happened that the stereotype of America is a stupid population, and you were having a difficult time understanding why people enjoy GH. However, now you say you do enjoy the game? So perhaps I misread the first post, and you were simply asking an opinion, and I should be the one to apologize.

Either way, it was off-topic and can be disregarded.

  10. Sure, if you like to play GH, then cool- I just wonder that it's JUST AS EASY to fork out $150 for a decent starter acoustic and learn to play it yourself.

Yes. We'll just pick it up and learn it.

Learning is easy. Just say it; it's so easy to say. Learn it.

It must be easy to do.

You're implying that learning the guitar is totally easy, and you've done it. You're probably not very good at it, then.

    Ummm...

It took me about 10 minutes to pick up the basic riff of Sunshine of your Love. It's really that easy.

And it sounded terrible. You were a beginner grinding out a quick riff. It doesn't compare to the instant gratification of having the whole song being fed back to you just by clicking away with that same ten minutes of commitment.

I'm sure you sound better on guitar NOW, but as far as the psychological joy of instant gratification that we as humans crave, you're just not getting it.

After all of your Ameri-hate, you've really put your foot in your mouth.

  11. I suppose I may be biased when it comes to Guitar Hero, because I AM an instrumentalist. I was trained in Piano and taught myself the guitar (And I do know a few "off by heart" bass lines for a Bass Guitar.)

It's really irritating when I KNOW the guitar component of "Jessica" or "Sunshine of your love" and look at the Guitar Hero notations and think- "wow... it's actually easier on a real guitar."

I know playing an instrument is "a commitment." But it's meant to be fun. I sorta don't believe all those people who treat an instrument as some sort of rigorous discipline you have to constantly work work work at. Sure, you have to practice. Sure, you have to work at it. But it should never turn into work.

Took me a couple of days from first exposure to play Symphony of Destruction well on Medium.

How long did it take you to learn those songs from the first time you picked up a guitar?

You should be the last person making those sort of comments about Guitar Hero.

  12. Playing an instrument well is a commitment.

If anyone here is honestly advising Guitar Hero players to just pick up a real guitar, and further implying that they'll sound good in the same amount of time the average player spends playing Guitar Hero, they're not an instrumentalist.

Furthermore, giving instrument advice when you're not an instrumentalist makes you an idiot.

We play games for entertainment. Guitar Hero and Madden are entertaining to the right audience.

Most people who play a lot of Madden are down to play a game of football anytime. Guitar Hero players have a lot of exposure to rock music. It's not so weird.

Artesu, I think you and I may be the only people on the planet that hate Halo.

I'll join you there. Mediocrity combined with the sheer ubiquity is aggravating.

  13. Thanks for the suggestion, Luke. It appears to be a pedal of some sort? Something that does on-the-fly processing.. I'll keep it in mind, but money is a little tight right now.

As far as timing problems with waveform, I just meant human error when playing. Of course, the final product of live instruments is raw waveform. Even with metronomes, some error does occur. Hell, maybe it's only from the people I work with. I dunno.

As far as midi keyboards, since I'm working with just midi, I'd prefer to just compose it all out so that real-time isn't a factor.

I know how to make the piano sound much better. That's a product of me being a little lazy, and not understanding the ADSR settings... automation, it's called?

I've got a fair amount of reading to do, though.

SoulinEther, thank you too, that's all very good to know, and will help me out a lot.

    One last thing, I'd like a few (cheap?) suggestions for instruments to use for the beginning melody. I could have sworn one of you listed a couple for me to use, but looking through quickly, I can't find it D;

I'd like something a little industrial for the main line.. I was using electric guitar to begin with, but I had nothing that sounded good. Cheap guitar and amp VST's weren't cutting it.. but then I found that brilliant Superwave VST. I wish I knew what all of its settings did!

  14. Oh I know you didn't want to say anything, but I still take the time to read between the lines.

The crits had shifted to the composition of Sprout Procession (rightly so, I will do some serious tweaking), and then related back to my own insight on music theory. So I thought "oh fuck, this guy thinks Sprout is my best compositional work, 'here's a link.' "

Yeah, that was meant simply to let you have a better idea of what the insightful (rivethead/metalhead) composer can compose, not what the shitty sequencer can sequence.

Luke, I don't work with much live instruments since I always run into trouble with their waveform being poorly timed, and there's no clean way to fix that. That, and I don't have access to a studio. Just a cardioid mic..

What I wanted to do was enable fade-out on a single midi note.. for example a guitar is sustaining too long for my liking, but ending the note sooner just cuts it right off.

    ALSO

What exactly is the relation between Attack, Decay, Sustain, and Release? Decay and Sustain don't make any audible difference to me. Maybe that's because my attack is always at the bottom? My understanding of it is based to the point where all I know is "Attack needs to be all the way down or it's got no "umph", Decay doesn't do anything, Sustain goes all the way up because its the same as extending a midi note, and Release should be all the way up for pianos but it makes reaper freeze so it goes down a little bit"

Your insight would be appreciated.. hah.

  15. Hey Thanks, Luke. I'll take a look at that. I'm downloading it now. It's weird that they would insist on an e-mailed link, though. I guess that's what secondary e-mail accounts are for.

Yeah, I've been messing with Reaper here and there. I'm slowly getting better with it. I'm not sure what all of the jargon means. For example, the velocity isn't the only setting for the piano roll. There are fucking countless options, and I wouldn't have a clue what any of them do.

I need to learn how to make a notes slide, and I also need to learn how to fade notes out, and make them pan in real-time. That's the main thing keeping me from making full use of the stereo.. that mp3 is just monaural.

But anyway, I hope you guys see potential enough to come back and listen to subsequent versions when I post them.

oh, and as far as volume is concerned, I like a lot of dynamic range. The music gets louder later... but I suppose the quiet sections could desensitize the listener enough such that the ending could still appear loud, even if it's the same volume as some other parts.

Music is all just mind-control :P that's all.

edit: oh, when I referred Gario to my original work, I meant skill from a composition point of view. My processing skill isn't any better now. In fact, the processing part of it happened just today.

  16. If you want a single, powerful voice I'd recommend octaves or unisons instead (it'll be better using different instruments, though). I'm dead curious, though - what classes are you taking (or have taken) in music theory? I could help point you in a good direction (as in what classes to take, what to listen to and what not, etc.) if your interested...

Ack, and please post the source!!

Music Theory 1. Typical theory class.

    "These are musical modes!"

    "This is a seventh chord!"

that was the first semester. Now it's a little more in-depth.. secondary dominant chords and shit.

I think you've gotten the wrong impression from listening to this sucker, though. Seriously, go have a look at the link to my original work.. and have a listen to "Lullaby of the Stillborn" or "The Wise Man's Dement". You might find that my style has evolved since Sprout Procession, which is the second piece of music I've written in my life.

However, you're right. I think I will give Sprout Procession's structure a little bit of an overhaul.

I don't like the idea of pointing me in a specific direction. If your ears want to hear classical music, you're not going to like some of my ideas. My background is metal and industrial electronica. Harmonization and modal variety are relatively minimal.. it's very "horizontal" music. Metal is all power-chords, so if you're a stickler for parallel fifths, your ears are gonna tweak.

But you suggested parallel octaves. That's also looked down upon by 18th century theorists in the same way as parallel fifths, but that's in the context of music for like four different voices. I basically have two voices.. ... maybe I should try adding more.

Overall, not bad for a first piece, but certainly not close to OC standards

I dunno, I've seen some pretty bland stuff, even after lockdown. It gives me confidence, which I figure is a good thing.

  17. A quick word to Gario, this was actually one of my first compositions. If you're curious to hear what some of my newer (and completely original) work is like, it's here. I like to think of the parallel fifths as a single powerful voice, but I see (and kinda already noticed) what you mean.

Adding the counterpoint should be fun. I think my style has improved since the original composition of this piece. I may even make it longer.

Thanks for the input; I agree with everything stated thus far, and will make an effort to work the problems out.

The drums are just a soundfont from Darkesword's page.. it's called tgsf21x, whatever that means. The drums gave me some of the most problems.. I don't have any high-end samples. On top of that, I'm not real experienced with composing drum tracks either.

and Damn, I wish I had remembered to post the source to begin with.. I was quite proud of some of my own added material.
