  1. So OCR does get to have a panel again this year. Awesome. In a slightly larger (and much more central) theater, as well. On Friday, the good events day, not sunday the "eh, you can probably skip" day.

Still only the one hour but, hey, not doing too badly for yourselves.

It'll be nice to have a chance to hang out with DJP, Liontamer, Palpable, et all, even if it's not the whole crew like at MAG, or if I could have made this year's Otakon.

And since it's on the first day, instead of the last, there'll be time afterwards to do just that, instead of everyone having to rush off to catch their planes home.

  2. Yeah, 2 months in advance is pretty well outside the realm of reasonability. It makes me glad that, the first thing I did when I decided I wanted to go again this year was buy my 3 day pass, back in April when they first went on sale. Because I knew they'd sell out at some point and did not want to take any chances.

  3. Holy shit, the 3 day passes are sold out already, and it's in more than a month.

Maybe if the panel happens, larry can toss me a guest pass :)

You mean to say that you hadn't bought your pass yet?!

  4. I thought I posted in this thread a long time ago. I guess it must have been an older thread that got lost to the ages.

The only moment in a video game that I can ever remember making me cry is the ending to Half Life 2 Episode 2. When Eli Vance gets killed by a combine advisor right in front of his daughter Alyx, and neither of you can do anything to help him.

Edit: Oh, and also a couple of the Thousand Years of Dreams stories in Lost Odyssey definitely choke me up.

  5. You know trouble was brewing when you started seeing Nickelodeon selling this movie out all over the place. That was mistake number one; what were they thinking? "Hmm, who should we get to help us produce a major live action anime crossover epic?" "How 'bout the guys that made Good Burger!?" "Brilliant!"

For the record, I haven't seen it, and wasn't planning to.

Uh, you realize that the original show this movie is based on was a Nickelodeon property, right?

  6. It's really nice to have a remix project album with some thematic consistence, musically.

As for the "concept", I can understand and appreciate the idea you were going for, but I think the execution was really weak, the tracks would be better off without it. Especially Kevin Eggerman -- rap songs like this, where the lyrics are forcibly shoehorned in to aggrandize a story or such are pretty universally weak. See Unknown from M.E., Pumpkin Hill, Don't Copy that Floppy, and

for examples of what I mean.

Actually, Finality is the only track that I'd say wasn't extremely diminished by the words.

And I don't mean to be insulting when I say that. Storytelling is difficult, and not everyone can do it perfectly on the first try. I think your story had a lot of potential, but it could have used a few more drafts before actually putting the final words down.

And the music came out really well. I'd love it if I could download versions of these tracks without the psychiatry talk over them. Especially all three versions of "A Special Case", and obviously excluding Finality and Kevin Eggerman.

  7. Just this last week I finally got around to playing Mirror's Edge (on PC, since it was $2 on a steam sale back in January), and got to thinking that Faith is a good example of the right way to do a female game protagonist that isn't just blank.

That's the problem I have with holding up Chell as the model of how to make a female character. She's a total blank, she doesn't say anything for the entire game, and you have to go kinda out of your way even to find a reflective surface to get a good look at her. This is like holding the player character from Doom up as an example of a strong masculine lead.

Don't get me wrong, I'm not saying that Valve can't do good female characters -- Alyx is a great example, though not a player character.

Anyway, what I was trying to say is that Faith, from Mirror's Edge, is a pretty strong female lead. She's got all these crazy acrobatic skills, can hold her own in a punching match or a footrace, and has real human emotions, and opinions about the way the world works. She is a woman, but no big deal is made of it except that it's quasi-implied at one point that she might have been romantically involved with one of the male characters.

So I was actually kinda surprised when I read through this thread and saw that noone had mentioned her yet.

  8. Odds of us in NA getting the bug fixed version?

    Zero!

Yeah, basically. Nintendo has pretty much no mechanism for any update ever happening for any Wii releases.

If they were to go ahead and start talking to MS people about getting it on XBLA or Xbox community games, it might be worth holding out for that release to be bugfixed.

  9. And what's even worse, and what I don't understand... Pixel likes the new music and hates the old. :(

Pixel is incredibly humble, and he played through the game like 50000 times over the course of creating it, so all his original music sounds flawed and boring and horrible to him.

And there's these guys who for some reason love it and want to bring the game to more people, so I imagine that anything they wanted to do with it felt flattering and awesome to him. So it's no wonder that he likes the changed versions better. As the creator, all he can hear in his originals are the flaws that detracted from the perfect realization of what he wanted the songs to be, and all he can hear in the new versions is that people loved his creation anyway.

Which I think is also an explanation behind some of the wtf translation decisions the new team made, like changing Grasstown to Bushlands, etc.

  10. There was something wrong with the original traslation?? :dstrbd:

Also a little disappointing that the new music isn't as good... I heard a few clips of the new music a year or two ago and they were pretty bad =/

Might be buying this for Curly Story....

Clearly someone who's a fan of the Kool-aid guy.

The only real failure of the original translation is when the password "ritanomo tsukuudo" (doukutsu monogatari backwards, in Japanese script) got translated as "Litagano Motscoud" instead of Yrots Evac
