3 legs means more stability and less chance to break down on you if they did a shitty job welding the thing.

You could also go the DIY route, fill a wide-diameter PVC pipe with dry sand and glue/screw/nail/whatever two squares of MDF on the top and the bottom.

Not sure what size you need, but these are the stands that I use and they've been great! Fairly cheap too.

i've seen these in person at Guitar Center... i thought they were really wobbly and not sturdy and cheaply made. it could have been just the display model, but i don't think i would buy a pair

Good thing you read the previous posts and noticed that those are the same exact ones I was linked to, only they cost $70 on Musicians Friend. I expect a price match and discount for stupidity on your part.
