Comments (Level 99):

Gario is definitely one of the heroes of the workshop forum. He's one of the

people who almost constantly gives feedback on each and every WIP he possibly

can. He's helped me a lot with mixes that I initially posted in the WIP section.

When I was checking for feedback on one of my songs and I saw his request for a

guitarist, a little voice in my head said "YOU OWE HIM, GIVE HIM GUITARS". That

little voice was surprisingly hard to shut up, so I gave him guitars.

I'd never heard the source tune before, and I really didn't need to since Mr.

Greg already had guitar parts from the source mapped out. There was a section or

two where he said "go nuts", so I did. The guitar tone here is a lot harsher in

the mids than my usual approach, and Gario did all the post processing so that

almost-cracking overdriven texture is all his work. Side note: this is the

second time I've written a solo section and the mixer has moved it out of sync.

While I'll probably never be fully used to how it sounds since I know how it was

intended to be, it's definitely an interesting result.

This ended up being an extremely smooth and rocking collab. I'll work with Gario

again, for sure.

Comments (Gario):

I honestly got to thank Level 99 for saving me on this one - I spent a full week

in solitude writing this song with the intention of including a real guitar, but

because I didn't really want to mention it to anyone until I was sure I was

going to have a remix I didn't contact anyone until I really needed them (well

aware of the risk of not finding someone suitable for the job). Level 99 came

immediately when I contacted him about it and took it by storm, resulting in the

work you see here. With all he's doing for OCR, I was surprised he took it on.

Not stopping there, he was not only enthusiastic, but talented and very easy to

work with so I'm very thankful for what transpired to make this piece a reality.

As for what inspired me to write this in the first place, it was a combination

of listening to my younger brother's remix of this very track (which was pretty

good, on it's own), listening to Washudoll's mix on the MMX Album project

(it's... freakin' incredible) and moving out of New Mexico. It just all clicked

at the same time - I wanted to do a rock-orchestra (similar to the MMX track),

wanted to do a remix of the source (provided by my brother) and wanted to

relieve stress (from the move), and here is the result.

I'm quite surprised there aren't more mixes of this game on here. I'm going to

vouch for it right now and say everyone should take another look at it - it's a

classic from David Wise's prime. Check out the game (and the music), and enjoy

our offering to OCR!

Post Script:

(If this track does not pass through the panel for any reason... although I

don't see that happening... I request you allow people to see the link to the

track that I provide you in the panel. It's good for the people working on WIP's

to listen for themselves as to why submissions are rejected, but it's very

difficult to understand your decisions if they can't hear the track themselves.

I'm invoking the position you all agreed on so many years ago, so if that's

invalid then do what you will. This is not commentary, so don't include it as

such, please, lol)

Nice high energy take on the source, though, that lead guitar processing is like, eh, not so hot. Weird slapback delay, strange reverb, and a distortion sound that isn't really getting the job done. The bass is also really difficult to hear. The rhythm guitars and the orchestral elements, as well as the drums and bells are sounding really nice, but the lead tone is really ruining the parts where it comes in. :-(

Redo that lead tone and we're good. Until then,

Blast from the past, I don't think I've heard this source since renting the game back in '94, but I remember it very well. Good song choice.

Gotta say that this wasn't working that well for me, even besides the lead guitar tone issue that was mentioned (which makes the song sound like it's clipping). On the positive side, the arrangement is good, I like the interplay between the bells and guitars, and the 1:47 section was a highlight. But the execution didn't sell the rock/orchestral type blend. The drum kit sounded like a studio recording while the orchestral elements sounded like a cathedral hall. They needed to meet at some halfway point. The machine-gun kick drumming also seemed to take up a lot of the space and there was a big gap where the bass should have been, so I thought there were mixing issues there too. If I were you and you haven't done this already, I'd compare this to some professional symphonic metal songs and try to get the balances right. For me, this is not as easy a pass as DA and OA make it out to be.
