I've read around (don't count on me, though) that Caviar Green drives are slower (something about eco friendly power consumption). If you're using that for sample streaming, I'd suggest Caviar Black.

Or if you don't mind $3000 more, get a nice terabyte SSD. :D

Also, power supply? I don't think a random 400 watt can pull the Core i7 and the Radeon HD 6870.

Caviar Blacks have higher RPM which means data is read and written faster. So I definitely recommend it if this computer is going to be compiling files for music which I imagine takes quite some time.

Not sure what the exact plans are to build this computer, but prophetik here at OCR builds computers for a small fee. He'll also probably drop in this topic eventually to give his feedback about your hardware setup.

How much does your friend want to spend, exactly, and what sort of things will he be doing with the system? I ask, because you could shave at least $500 dollars off of that system and still have a good machine for most music purposes.

EDIT: Didn't see that you had $300 in monitors on there, so maybe not $500. The possibilities I was talking about specifically were that you could go with an i7 8xx chip which would let you buy a cheaper motherboard, you could cut the RAM from 12 to 8 GB, you could replace the SSD with a regular disk drive (actually, I'd do this regardless because 80 GB is really too small to be your only sample drive), and you could replace the video card with a bargain-basement model. Dual monitors is a good idea, though. Don't forget the power supply, the case, the DVD drive, and (if needed) the operating system and soundcard/audio interface.

Any specific reason for the expensive graphics card? Unless they're gaming of course.

With my recent build, I went budget-friendly and got an AMD mobo with an integrated radeon graphics card. Since I use the computer primarily for music, it's not a big deal. Still, it can handle a game like Team Fortress 2 with decent graphics settings.

hmm well I guess I could go down on the GFX card. The idea i that this would also be a general/gaming computer. As far as going from 12 GB ram to 8 GB. if I put 8 in there then it will be dual channel instead of tripple channel. So 12 or 6 would be ideal.

The SSD wouldnt be for the samples. The SSD would be for the OS to give the computer an overall speedup (sure as hell helped my computer)

DVD drives are cheap, so im not really calculating that. Audio interface will come later, and I guess I should add an OS in there.

I think he wanted the SSD as a boot drive. Using an SSD as a samples drive would be incredibly lightning fast, but would cost an arm and a leg.

Also, unless he's recording, he should do fine with integrated audio and ASIO4ALL. It's not like he needs to hardware I/O if he only uses software.

yeah my friend doesn't really have anything to record, so an interface isn't the biggest deal at the moment. ASIO4ALL ftw :P

Im gonna modify the list soonish and let you guys know. Also looking to get prophetik up in this piece at some point. He helped me out quite a bit last time I built a computer.

Thanks for all the suggestions so far btw

You can DEFINITELY trim a LOT of the price on this:

-Instead of 12 GB, you can get an 8 GB with a dif. mobo (see next point) instead for a bit less than $100.

-Like someone said before (too lazy to open a new tab and see who), get a Core i7 8xx processor and an LGA 1156 motherboard instead. This could save you around $100.

-That power supply is definitely two times more than you need to pay for one. You can get this one for less than half the price. The reviews are mixed, but it's up to you.

-Get a GTX 460 nVidia graphics card instead; it's cheaper and videos online show it can pull Star Craft II at highest settings. Sure Starcraft II might be flexible in graphics, but it shows the 460 isn't a joke either. :P If you get the 768 MB version, you can get it for less than $150.

hmm well I think we want to keep the crazy amount of ram/Mobo/GFX card. As it stands, he is fine with the price. As for power supply a cheaper one that still powers everything would be ideal. Im trying to find everything on ncix, as thats probably where I will order from. Unless I can get it all at newegg for cheaper or something.

Edit: Decided to price everything out at newegg.ca (since we are in canada), and it looks like their stuff is cheaper in general. Here is the revised list:

You can get the Cooler Master Storm Scout Case AND an included 700 watt power supply for 169.98 (with shipping). I think it's a better deal than your $100 power supply plus a $150 case. :/

http://www.newegg.ca/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E16811119235&cm_re=storm_scout-_-11-119-235-_-Product

You can also trim that RAM by almost half the price with the same 6 GB and 1600 Mhz.

Other than disagreeing with your largely expensive Motherboard/CPU/GPU combo, I think you should be good to go afterwards.

Please don't buy this PSU :(. I owned it's predecessor, the StealthXstream I or whatever and it blew out on me, ruining some of my other components. I simply don't trust OCZ PSU quality - just read the reviews.

From personal experience, you get what you paid for with power supplies. Wattage output is definitely not the only thing you should be looking at when purchasing one - it's only the starting point. You also need to consider things like efficiency level & brand quality.

Sure, you can go with a cheap brand with higher wattage output, but don't be surprised when it soon blows out on you and even takes other components (like the motherboard) with it. This has happened to me twice and I've learned from my mistake.

Personally, on my last "budget" build, I also went with a 650W Corsair. They're simply the best brand out there & have a good reputation for using high quality Japanese-made capacitors.

I mean, it's up to you, but if I was to go cheap on something, it wouldn't be the PSU.

This is a good point. Maybe I'll go back to that corsair I picked out earlier.

Neblix: I was making large assumptions about the case, im not sure how much it actually is. As for my mobo/gpu/cpu choice. Why do you think its bad? You did see the part about it also being a gaming machine and just general purpose as well. Why not make it a beast that will last a good amount of time?

You can get a Core i7 8XX CPU and an LGA 1156 motherboard for cheaper. You might lose performance, but I know I personally would never be able to reach the limit of a Core i7 chip (i don't just do everything in soundfonts either :P).

I apologize, perhaps I shouldn't have haphazardly made a PSU recommendation, I was more bothered that it was $150 than trying to get you to buy a specific one. Yeah, prophet is probably gonna yell at me. :P The general message I was trying to convey is that you're probably paying a little more for this machine than you have to. (you = your friend)
