Draconiator
I knew about the Monotron, but I didn't know it could be used to make whole songs. By itself. I want one of these things. Totally amazing.
Moseph
I have a Monotron, and yes, it's a lot of fun. I bought it because I lost my Casio VL-1.
Anti-Syne
I keep mine constantly next to my computer, it's like a synthesiser stress ball to me, incredibly fun to play with, and i have used it in some of my tracks a few times. Can't believe you didn't link to the brett domino video though
EC2151
I've always wondered: do these things come with presets? Or are they largely dependent on the sound library you already have? Plus, it sounds like you'd really need an automatic-tuner for something like this, because your whole song can't be off-key or glissandos. Anti-Syne
No presets, it's just a basic, small analogue synth, 1 oscillator, 1 LFO (assignable to either pitch or cut-off) and a low pass filter. It also has an aux input so you can plug any sound source into it, using it as an external filter unit, that's handy in itself even without the synthesis part. But yes it is hard to play melodies on the small keyboard and does have a variable pitch knob so basically it can be tuned and detuned. I use mine more for making sounds rather than melodies. Still extremely good value, I strongly reccommend them

Anti-Syne
I've had mine since October and it's shown no sign of needing a battery change any time soon, it takes 2 AAA's
Overflow
So cool. I want one. How can I get one in Canada? EDIT: NVM, I think I just found a store that's selling them
EC2151
The only thing off-putting is that there's no MIDI cable... So for us laptop shmucks, there's little this can do outside of be a cool toy.

I'm not sure if MIDI-compatible ribbon synths even exist. I've never seen one before, at least. EDIT: It would be really easy to record it through the line-in on a laptop since it uses an 1/8" headphone out.
theshaggyfreak
I've had one of these little Monotrons since they came out. Quite fun to use and great for sound effects! The really cool thing is that it's REALLY easy to mod the thing if you're handy with a solder iron. ...Oh, I have a Casio VL-1 too. Those are fun! Obtuse
While Youtubing, I saw some cool mods ... I own one and they are fun to play with. really need to mod mine since it is kinda useless with the ribbon controller. Also I know that the schematic was released by KORG to the public.
