prophetik music
I've wanted to put something on OCremix since i was 8 years old listening to my dad play them in the car. Now i finally feel like i have something worthy of this place. I also have this on soundcloud and youtube, and even newgrounds, on my associated accounts there. Games & Sources Mecha Green Hill, from Sonic Chaos. https://ocremix.org/song/25923/mecha-green-hill-zone https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=ZbwVPuXFDo8 Edited November 5 by Chimpazilla closed decision
prophetik music
opens with a synthy bass bouncing around on the opening's bassline. there's a really horrible sound effect that hurt my ears at 0:05 and a rough saw bass comes in right after as a drum loop fades in. the original starts playing - it might even be the original audio? - in the background and it's honestly pretty hard to hear it over the drums and the bass riff. there's another transition at 0:41 and the drums drop for a bit, which is good - the track wanted a breather for a moment here. again the original audio sounds like it's playing in the background behind some additional synths that are layering. drums are back in by 0:55 and we truck through the second part of the melodic line. there's a bass riff break, and the bass fades out by 1:36 for the same melodic material by the instrument that sounds like the original audio. This trucks through that material until it hits a small outro that looks like a mouse ate some of it, and then it's done. it sounds like this is the original game audio with a drumloop and a few layered synths on top. unfortunately that's not enough arrangement for our site based on the submission standards unfortunately. however, the concept - upscaling some of the synth elements, adding drums, and putting a break in the middle for a solo or something - definitely has legs! you'd need to do a lot to personalize it and make it more radixerus and less masayuki nagao, but i definitely think you can make something work there. i'd encourage you to ditch the original game audio and find your own voice and synths to replicate this, and then bring it to the workshop on the forums or the discord and talk through some ideas there. Hemophiliac
This is a fun, but highly conservative arrangement. Going dnb isn't a bad call, but when you're working with loops like this you need to give some variety or variation with them. You drop out the drums at good times such as 0:41. Keeping the same loop over and over gets old very fast, so changing it up or slicing it goes a long way to keeping the track moving and avoiding becoming static. The ending is awkward as the final transition at 2:09 is abrupt to get us bookended to the opening bass loop, and then it has a very quick fade-out to close it. Nothing wrong with book-ending the track, it's just the sudden transition back and the quick fade. A more definitive ending would be ideal considering it is such a short track. I'm not sure if that is the original source instrument lead in the background or a synth that is very close to it, but I would suggest to make that not as similar to avoid the confusion of it possibly being just the original in the back. Some of the other synth choices aren't ideal, but I don't want to criticize those too much as that can be an artistic choice and they don't impact my decision on this track in particular. I agree with Prophetik that we need more of Radixerus' takes and inspiration to take this to the next level. Let's hear what you bring to it aside from the drum loops. That could be in the form of melodic changes, harmonic changes, or maybe a brand new section that's completely original. Those are just a few examples (but not all) of how one could bring your own looks to a track. If you feel you need more help in that department I'd recommend posting in the workshop or joining the discord seeking feedback on there. Chimpazilla
The guys explained this situation so well, especially prophetik; I could pretty much copy and paste his words here as my own vote. We do not post remixes that contain the actual game audio, and from what I am hearing, that original audio is in here. The opening bass is so plain, simple and exposed. That sound effect first heard at 0.05 is so loud and abrasive. The patch playing bass starting at 0.05 is also abrasive but could work as a transition element, but it's not a strong patch to carry the bass all the way through the piece. I like the DnB approach here though! To make a track like this groove properly would require some strategic sidechaining, and I hear none happening here. The synths are not the greatest, and the drums are too quiet compared to everything else (something sidechaining would help a lot, in addition to volume balancing). Otherwise, the mixing is fairly ok. Strange outro (which seems to include a lot of inaudible rumble), but it seems like the track is intended to loop. Overall, original audio must be removed, that's an automatic dealbreaker. Synths need to be mixed better or replaced, especially the harsh sounding elements including that sfx at 0.05. Although there's a good little breakdown at 0:41, it is still the source writing (and possibly actual audio) but that is the right arrangement idea. The arrangement and writing need to have some variation, interpretation, personalization away from the source tune more than this, to be postable on OCR.
