Am I the only one who was puzzled as to why Sparta had a bottomless pit in the center?

Historically, it was a well. A bottomless pit is just a much better well with no water.

Also, if that was the biggest beef you had with reason and/or logic in this movie, you were hardly paying any attention. I joke, I joke.
