Liontamer ⚖️ Posted September 8 Posted September 8 (edited) Artist Name: Rick Hurricane The original track is actually very short. Less than half a minute. But the main melody is so gripping and mysterious that it's been stuck in my head for decades. I've expanded the track to be two minutes in length, so it plays four times in total. I have sampled the main melody and some accompanying chord stings directly from the original source. I have recorded new drums using SNW to give it an 80s cyberpunk / post punk sound. I used Genny to record new bass with added oomph. Added a new melody for sections 2 and 4 using RYM2612. Section 3 eschews the main melody for a keyboard solo. This is also done with RYM2612 using the 16bit Organ setting - which sounds a lot like Bo's original instrument for the main melody. Games & Sources Phantasy Star II for the Sega Genesis / Mega Drive written by Bo (Tokuhiko Uwabo). Edited 1 hour ago by Liontamer closed decision
prophetik music ⚖️ Posted September 11 Posted September 11 starts with original audio and some new, updated bass and drums from the sound of it. there's a unique melodic line added the second time through which unfortunately is out of tune from whatever intonation the original is at, a solo the third time through the chord pattern, a repeat of the out-of-tune section, and it's done. there's no ending to speak of, just an end of the loop. this unfortunately isn't enough arrangement to pass our submission standards. most of what's here is what was in the original track. i liked the concept of adding the big arena drums and a fat, aggressive bass to the theme, but you'd need to do a lot more to make this less what Uwabo did and more what you're making. getting away from sampled audio is a good first step, and then personalizing it more beyond just repeating the original several times in a row is another. i'd encourage you to visit our workshop forum or the workshop channel on the discord for some more direct feedback. pixelseph ⚖️ Posted yesterday at 03:10 PM Posted yesterday at 03:10 PM This is a solid start! Too much repetition across the runtime, and not enough personalization by far, to meet our criteria, though. proph hit all the same points I was going to make; there's plenty of room for more exploration in here - changing the backing under the solo, adding an original bridge to tie some sections together - that would help make up ground. Seconded on the #workshop channel feedback (direct link to the OCR discord) - it's invaluable for getting ears on your track and feedback making any adjustments you'd like! I'd be happy to give this another listen if it comes back on the panel with some fresh changes, but unfortunately it's going to be a NO (resubmit)
Liontamer ⚖️ Posted 1 hour ago Author Posted 1 hour ago Man, all the years I've known about Phantasy Star II, but I've never actually listened to this specific source before, this is awesome. In any case, Rick, I've gotta echo prophetik. This is under two minutes (read: underdeveloped), and it's sampling the original audio and (in your case, substantively but basically) building around it, which itself is a violation of our Submission Standards. We're looking for a true arrangement when you reinstrument & interpret the source tune, not a traditional remix where the foundation is the original in-game music/audio. No ending either, c'mon; at least make one instead of ending at a hard stop. Stick around and see what more you can learn from this community, Rick! NO
