The Legend of Zelda

Title

This remix was made using FruityLoops 7 and a small handfull of non-FL VST plugins. It is, admittedly, a test to see whether or not I've grown to a level that would be acceptable on www.ocremix.org. I'm attempting to get a dark-future style feel to the original song, with an emphasis on a heavy, but slow driving beat, overuse of static effects, and a familiar, well-loved tune slowly moving into obscurity.

Any feedback would be very appreciated.

The approach tries to be interpretive, but the execution is weak. The textures somewhat fill out the soundfield, but there's tons of empty space and no complexity.

A lot of the electrosynths are extremely generic and just sound corny. The volume gets piercing at times especially with the woodwind lead and beats, with some slight distortion going on at times; all that just need to be scaled back. Not much going on harmonically either. Contrary to the intent stated in the sub letter, the plodding beatwork also did nothing for this and didn't drive things along.

Not even sure what the idea was behind the weird stuff fading in at 4:48, but it's a mess and makes for a really haphazard ending. Beginner-ish results, sure, but some decent base ideas. Keep at it as you strive to increase your skills.

nice attempt at interpretation, as Larry mentioned, but the arrangement isn't very dynamic, and the production is grating.

Also, your lack of attention to the harmonic structure of the original shows at both 3:29 and 3:49. Sounds like the melody was midi-ripped, then you just slapped a different bassline underneath it. In a very harmonically straightforward interpretation, you've suddenly got a C major chord over an F# in those two sections. Uh-glee. Pay attention to this stuff. It's important.

I can hear what the remixer was going for here. However, it was the execution of it that is not so great. The bassline and other synths clash in terms of frequency ranges and so sounds very muddy and undefined, especially in the intro section. The drums, while sounding hot, at times push too hard and cause audible distortion, the kind when you push the drums too hard against a limiter. The drums are also 100% dry, sounds like there is not even a touch of small room reverb on them, which would help them sit in the mix a little better, even if they are the driving force.

The arrangement was minimal, and the lack of texture and sparseness of the background didn't help things. The sound design was rather bland and didn't hold my interest. At 4.40, some very off-key super high notes emerge. For such a sparse texture, if the sounds had really been amazing it would have been different, but as it stands now, this needs more development.
