  1. Ok, so here's what I have. The first list is excerpts that I felt I did correctly. with the other being ones I'm having trouble with.

This one I changed the rhythm and had a proper sound drop and it sounded fine.

    http://www.savefile.com/files/898896

This was basically just an exercise for changing rhythms that I felt I did correctly (the sound drop was an extraction error)

    http://www.savefile.com/files/898892

This one I changed the sound right at :10 without it feeling like it was missing something, but then at :31 I mess up and something's missing.

This list is more my common mistakes.

I like this change, but I can't complete the sound drop correctly.

This one is a good example of me fudging up a drum change.

And here I mess up the sound drop again.

I just don't understand what I did correct in the first three and messed up in the second. I don't think its a matter of samples, but as we know from our favorite SNES soundtracks, that really doesn't matter too much. I don't want to keep relying on bass piano and reverse/crash cymbals to let me change parts and instruments out. I need to learn how to do this properly.

  2. Just make sure the rhythm you want to change to is always there, just not heard until you want it to be.

Then it can emerge in any way that pleases you.

I don't quite understand what that means. I'll try to find some examples of what I felt I did right and what I KNOW I did wrong. (excerpts, not the whole song)

  3. I think phrasing is the right word - my problem consists of moving from one part of a song to another and changing up rhythms and drum patterns. For now, I've mostly been able to coast by on building a decent beat and structure and using it throughout the whole of my song(s) and using crash and reverse cymbals to change parts, but thats all I really know how to do and I'm sick of it. I have been able to change up song parts decently before, but most of the time it just comes off very awkwardly and I really don't know what I'm doing right and what I'm doing wrong.

Here are some examples of what it is I'm curious about (say what you want about the songs themselves, I'm just using them as examples):

    Smashing Pumpkin's TONIGHT TONIGHT

    http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=u_f7LF3IiKI

This song uses a lot of rhythm changes that I'm curious about. At :43 and 2:36 especially, the sound almost completely drops from full strings and fast drumming to almost nothing. I keep trying to do this and it just comes off awkwardly, like there's something missing, yet when I listen to Smashing Pumpkins doing it, it seems to come off correctly.

Motoi Sakuraba's INCARNATION OF THE DEVIL

    http://208.53.158.138/soundtracks/valkyrie-profile-original-sound-version/fpyvmzytes/239-incarnation-of-the-devil.mp3

Motoi knows how to change up his rhythms and song parts better than anyone I know, and he does it frequently in this song. There is also a sound "drop" here at 1:12 that he pulls off pretty well.

I'm wanting to know what the general rules, if any, about changing drums and sound structures so they come off well, or just what I need to or can do to get better at it and know what I'm doing. Any thoughts?

  4. Server error?

Thats what I thought at first, but it had the bandwidth to match it and its still there

Other people on savefile have easy access and maybe thought you had a leaked song or something...?

Thats news to me, I thought savefile accounts were pretty isolated from each other. I haven't explored much of the site but there isn't anything that tells me its pretty open.

And even still, It had only been up for about 23-26 hours by the time I checked it, and I doubt a work in progress by a no-name-nobody such as myself could justify that kind of number.

My biggest fear is its a bot or some kind of hacker thats trying to drive my bandwidth out of control or gain access to something through it.

  5. honestly what does it matter

is this really THAT important to you that you made a thread about it

or did you wanna say hello overclocked remix look at me im so cool everyone is downloading my wip go download it too

1800 downloads in 60 page views? Thats not something to be proud of, thats something to be suspicious of, and I've never heard of any kind of anomally like that before so if someone knows something about it, I'd sure like to be informed to.

  6. A couple days ago, probably yesterday actually, I posted a WIP for an oc remix I'm working on (with a possible collaborator) to very humbling success and I chose savefile.com as my MP3 host.

Well, I get on savefile today and my download count fucking skyrocketed. There have only been about 60 views to my WIP thread and the download count for that file is close to 1800.

    Eighteen HUNDRED.

And I checked it again when I got home to make sure it wasn't a mistake and sure enough, it wasn't.

So what the hell happened? Did I get hit by a bot or something? I find it difficult to believe that each person who stopped in to look downloaded it 30-40 fucking times.

    Any ideas? Thanks.

  7. First of all, the bassline wanders too much; it doesn't really establish what the background chord is very well, which makes the song's harmonization factor suffer. Second, the drums are lacking in variation--that part won't be hard to fix, I'm sure.

I think the bass is just fine with the strings supplementing it. There are only two main chord parts used, the major and minor and its not too hard to get what kind of feeling they're going for. The drums you might be right about, but I wouldn't know what else to do with them and screwing with whats already there might just create more problems, if history is any teacher.

I'd be willing to take some minor imperfections to just get this piece workable as opposed to upsetting it to fix something small.

What's killing me is the way you incorporated the Pufifia theme. It's incredibly far from the source song's original melodic build, first of all...and that sort of negates the nostalgic feelings I would normally have. I think you can take some liberties with it once you've established the original structure, but having makes its entrance in a severely altered state like you have right now is an iffy idea..

Thats a fair point, but my last remix submission was rejected because it didn't "interpret" the source material, whatever the hell thats supposed to mean. I figured this would more interpretive.

Apart from the obvious holes in the melody, I'm satisfied with the way it turned out. Its not an obvious redo nor does not resemble the original in any. My biggest concerns are the sound quality and arrangement (like being too short or whatever).

As far as collaborating, yes it is a Fruity Loop and I wouldn't mind, but have you done any successful remixing before?

Also, thanks for being the first person to give helpful criticism on this board. Now I have some hope to work with.

  8. Since my Super Castlevania IV WIP failed temporarily, I'm going to try my hand at this one. This is a remix of Pufifia and Ending Motif done in an emotional, ending-style tribute (at least thats what I was going for) with trumpets and electric piano leading.

As I listen to it, I'm pleased with it, but I'm not sure I got the sound or arrangement correct. I tried writing some more stuff before the electric piano (the meat and potatoes so to speak) kick in, but it just sounded plodding and weak. I thought it would be better to just get right to the point.

Let me know what you think and please be specific (not complicated, specific) in your criticisms.

EDIT: Forgot to mention, this is not done yet, obviously. There are a lot of holes in the melody and still straightening up to do. The ending definitely needs work.

  9. This movie goes to some dizzying heights. I really liked that it didn't sell out to be assured it would break box office records. It was challenging, demanding, extremely intense - I really thought David Lynch got in on this at some point. The way the characters interact and change with each other was awesome. This movie is exactly what I want to see in an epic trilogy.

  10. I am here to post a remix to Level 2 and Simon's Theme from Super Castlevania IV. This is done is an electronic rock style and my most promising remix attempt to date.

My biggest concerns are with sound quality, phrasing, and instrument choice. I don't have just loads of top quality stuff to work with in terms of instruments or mixing capabilities. Its quite heavy, with the distortion guitar, distorted trance instruments, and LOUD bass piano and cymbals and while I think it gives it a lot of energy, I can see that it might be too much. My lead guitar is not great, but its the best lead instrument I could use on this song.

Additionally, I'm concerned that it goes for too long and may be too redundant, especially with the guitar melodies. I'm planning on reworking the guitar parts so it sounds less redundant, I just want to know if it works as it is.

This song is about as good as I can do given my current capability. If you have any criticisms please: A: Address them without unnecessary sarcasm and cynicism, just tell whats wrong with it and I'll fix it and B: Please don't give me vague comments like: "It needs to sound more COMPACT" or "It needs to flow better". Yeah, great, but how do I make it do that? Please be specific in your criticisms so that when I go back to fix it, I'll know what to do.

    Thanks!

  11. Good riddance. Hated this show ever since its first episode. Have only caught a few of them of course, but never enjoyed one. A perfect example of how terrible mainstream cartoons have become.. I think I'm going to go watch some Centurions or TMNT90s.

I think thats fair to say, Ed Edd n Eddy was pretty poor to begin with and it took a while before it got good - but damn..... once it got over that hill.....

  12. Antipode is correct, that is the File Select theme and I'm currently doing that track for the project.

As for people replacing tracks, that was discussed towards the beginning of the project and I'm not totally sure on the outcome. Something was definitely decided but I can't remember so maybe Fishy or Pocketman will step in.

Ok, I'll try to do something else with it then.
