  1. So favorites threads are cool now? Meh, I'm not worried about it if you guys aren't. :pretzel:

My heart says Breath of the Wild but my mind says The Last of Us.  No game has made me feel something more keenly than The Last of Us, even if mostly that feeling was revulsion and sadness at the end.

  2. ^Lolz.  Thanks for the comic relief here, @Modus.

    Working in reverse order...

@AngelCityOutlaw: First off, I appreciate the honesty and the benefit of your experience.  :)

So, to address your concerns there, yeah, the schedule being my primary motivation is exactly what's holding me back, but I would say that the reason I'm a dispatcher now is that I do have a strong internal motivation to help people, so lives being on the line is (sort of) a plus.  It terrifies me, for sure, but so did being a dispatcher and I did that anyway, largely because I thought I could help people.

As to my physical fitness, I neglected to mention that I am also a personal trainer.  I'm in pretty good shape, and more than willing to work hard to get up to snuff for the squad. I'm somewhat familiar with the test that would be involved and feel pretty good about gearing up for it.  Actually, having a solid goal to train for would be nice, as I've been a little rudderless lately as far as that goes. :)

@Patrick Burns: Thanks for the clearly well-considered post!

You read between the lines quite well, sir.  All of the things you listed also appeal to me.  I would probably be a shoe-in for the job as I'm already working for the city, and I actually would need very little additional training (pretty much just firefighter school, which I would be paid more than I make now for).   Actually, getting into the thought of additional school/training, it dovetails nicely with a mid-term plan I have as is: I am pretty much convinced at this point that I should go back to school (online) and get my Bachelor's in Emergency Management Systems, which my city might pay for even now, and I'm sure they would if I was working as a fireman.

Speaking to one other point you made and to some degree AngelCityOutlaw's, the draining of the soul from seeing terrible things is a real concern, but I already get a fair bit of that now, and you would be surprised how crappy it is to HEAR all of these things and not be able to control anything.  Being a dispatcher is a double-edged sword in that I can get help started towards someone having the worst day of their life, but I can't go out there and fix anything, which usually is good for me but sometimes is TERRIBLE.  That's something that would motivate me to go for it.

  3. Hey y'all! I got a random one for you, which might seem silly to ask here, but I think your impartiality might help me out.

Sooooo, right now I work as a telecommunicator for my local police department.  Basically, I'm a 911 dispatcher.  Yes, it is crazy.  Yes, I hear insane stuff frequently.  That's not what I'm here for, though. :)

I like the job quite a bit, but it's not perfect.  There are a couple big problems, the primary one being the schedule.  Right now I work night shift, which is ok but not optimal, but worse than that, I rotate so that I work every other weekend.  The problem here is that I only get my son on the weekends.  If I worked dayshift it would actually be worse because I would still have to do every other weekend, and I would actually get less (really almost no) time with my kiddo on the weekends I worked.

This all leads me to be considering applying to be a career firefighter.  Obviously that job can be even more stressful than the one I have now, not to mention the fact that it is also actually dangerous, while I'm never in any harm's way now.  There would definitely be many rewarding factors to the job though, and the main one I would actually be looking forward to would be the schedule.  Firefighters, at least in my city, work 24 hour rotations.  That means that they spend a day or two in a row at the station, responding to calls as needed.  If it's slow, they chill.  If it's night, they sleep.  And so on.

So I guess my question is this: should I go for it, particularly as my main motivation seems to be the schedule? I never dreamed of being a fireman when I was a kid like others did, and I wonder if it isn't irresponsible to take a job where I could die when I have a 7 year old son who obviously would be devastated if I did.  Like I said, I bring this to you because I feel like my family and close friends are really just too close to give me an objective answer.  My family, for instance, pretty much all poo-pooed the idea.  My son only understood it as me having more time with him.  My girlfriend is trying to remain impartial and just supportive with no strong words either way, but clearly is more worried than anything.

TL;DR - Should RFB try and become a fireman despite the danger, even though it's mainly for the cushy schedule?

  4. Hoo boy.  Sooo, yeah.  This was not my best MAG.  Definitely experienced some substantial personal Sturm und Drang that, along with just generally trying to help my lady acclimate to her first MAG, kept me from much of what I wanted to do.  I'm pretty bummed I missed you guys entirely. :(:(:(

But! Next year, my dudes.  Next year.  I will return, like MacArthur.  Or Larry Oji.  We'll hang.  8)

Haha that's awesome. The challenges (*RIP*) used to give me my yearly dose of humbling. At the end of every year I thought that surely I'd come back stronger and crush some of the new ones faster than I would have before... never happened XD

Oh man I remember the first year they introduced the challenges (M5? M6?)  I walked up like yeah, surely I can win at least one of these.  Lulz.  There is no hard like old school hard.

@jmr, that sounds lit! I'm doing Concert Security again this year, so hopefully I'll be there to help the show go well. :)

Here's to hoping I've played enough Gundam Versus on PS4 to win a few matches this year......

Do you all ever get something happening together in the jam space? Considering bringing my horn again this year, but when I had in years past I found myself doing other things rather than just showing up at random.

Good luck with Gundam.  Back when I used to actually play competitive games I would come to MAG partially to restore my humility.  I'm pretty decent at Soul Calibur, for instance, and last year I did like a 20 win streak at the arcade on Soul Cal 2 before I got DEMOLISHED by the best Kilik player I have ever seen.  Dude utterly destroyed me.  It was beautiful.

As to jamming, I'd love to do this, but I feel like there's always something going on in the jam space (and clinic space) except for maybe the wee hours of the morning.

  8. The Legend of Zelda: The Spirit Tracks final dungeon just wore me the F down.  As some of y'all might know, I have a triforce tattooed on my spine.  I'm pretty serial about my Zelda, and this is one of very few in the series I haven't completed.  Just sooooo tediously difficult.

One of the other Zeldas I didn't complete? 2.  And it wasn't Shadow Link.  It was the area leading up to the final Temple.  You know the section on the overworld with the random encounters with super strong Lizalfos, the weird eyeball dudes that dropped fire, and the lava? Yeah, that.  So !#%$ing frustrating.  Ground me right down.

  9. Hey y'all!  I'm gonna be there!

What's on the docket this year? Late night PPR discussions in real life? Profanity-laced pancake breakfasts? Nuking forums for bad behavior?

On the real though, when's the OCR workout? When's the OCU concert? When's the panelz? I probably could look all this up, but I'm lazy.

    :pretzel:

  10. So, I showed up to work out at like 1045 or so, which is perhaps a little late given I said 10 haha. I met Jeremy (Taucer) on the way down but I don't think anyone else was still there. :(

I'm working tomorrow morning until 1pm but how about we work out Sunday morning at 10? For real? I'll set an alarm and stuff. Let's bro it up.

P.s. GroupMe isn't working for crap for me. Thus, forum posts.

Did anyone hit their goals for 2015? I did okay and could have done way better, but 2015 threw a lot of emotional turbulence at me, really made my focus suffer. But, as it stands:

    GOALS

Bench Press: NO. Advanced from 235 for three reps to 255 for three reps. Got 265 for two.

Squat: NO. Worst progress of all five lifts. Advanced from 245 for three reps to 275 for three reps, and tweaked my back attaining that new goal (had my rack set too high, and had to go on my toes a bit to put the bar back on. My back didn't like it for some reason...)

Pullups: YES! Three clean, dead-hang pullups with two plates on me. New goal for 2016 is 110.

Deadlift: SO CLOSE. Got 355 then my left knee really started to act up. Had to switch from conventional stance to sumo stance and start building my way back up, but I'm really optimistic about progress for this year. Setting my goal a bit higher at 385.

Overhead Press: NO. Advanced from 155 to 165. I guess the explosion of strength I gained in my shoulders finally hit a plateau, but I think I can hit it this year.

Body weight: NO. Got up to 203, but emotional stuff really made this fluctuate. Currently at 198 with bf % around 12, so hopefully we'll see some better progress as my stress evens back out.

    How did you all do?

Sorry for the emotional turbulence, man, but considering that, still pretty manstrous (yeah I said it) progress overall.  Those pullups are balls nasty and that OHP ain't no joke either.  You'll get it this year! :nicework:

  12. ^It's actually a fairly simple process.  Not easy, per se, but uncomplicated.  All you really have to do is take the test from whomever you would like.  I went through ACE, the American Council on Exercise.  They are one of the most commonly recognized.  While passing that is all you need to do to get the certification, the material covered is pretty effing expansive, so I would suggest to anyone interested to invest in as much of the learning aids as possible.

Thanks everybody so far for the info/permission! The content policy does indeed seem to work fine and is very reasonable, thanks! :)

  13. Hey everybody! I got my personal trainer certification on the 29th of January and am starting my career.  To this point, I had a two-fold request:

    1. What are some great OC Remixes for training? Think of what you might hear playing over the PA at a gym or in an aerobics class.  Obviously fast-paced techno is a winner, but anything you guys like to listen to when you're getting your sweat on?

I would just put this in the Fit Club thread, except...

    2. May I have permission to play your music? Anyone who is or is not ok with this, please let me know.  Natch I will shout you out.  I rep OCR pretty hard as is and have been doing so for over a decade, so have no doubts as to this.

    Thanks!

As to goals, I need to get on that Fitocracy thing, I reckon. I was on Fitlinxx (somewhat similar but just at the Y pretty much,) but now that's went away, so some goal/progress tracking might be nice.

Did this for a while and then fell off.  I was spending a lot of time tracking my goals and I just started having less time in general.

On 1/14/2015 at 8:23 AM, RealFolkBlues said:

Most of my goals are not lifts, but sure, let's put em down in writing:

    -275 1rm bench

Hahahahahaha no.  No sir.  This might have happened if I had been hitting bench hard all last year, but I did a bunch of other stuff.  I think I'm fairly well plateaued on bench, though I think if I learned how to really engage my chest I would get better results.  I'm not too worried, as my current 1rm is 210, so if I keep that and am kicking around at 170 lbs or less, it's respectable.

On 1/14/2015 at 8:23 AM, RealFolkBlues said:

    -315 1rm squat

So close.  I tried this a couple weeks back and didn't get squashed...butttt I didn't get down far enough to count it either.  It was not a great lifting day for me in general due to various factors, so I'm pretty sure I could do this one.  Haven't tried again, but perhaps soon.  Also, I have been squatting barefoot, and I gotta admit, I think I'm converted.  It was nice, especially since I have some very flat feet.  Gripping the floor so hard.

On 1/14/2015 at 8:23 AM, RealFolkBlues said:

    -bodyweight push jerk

Forgot about this one.  Last I left it, my 1rm was 165, and I might be a little better now cuz I've still done these, but haven't went for a max in a sec.

On 1/14/2015 at 8:23 AM, RealFolkBlues said:

-improve flexibility, particularly in my back and hamstrings

Nope.  Haven't had the time, sad to say.  I think I'm gonna start consistently doing yoga on Sundays, so this might happen.  I'm not that worried about it.

On 1/14/2015 at 8:23 AM, RealFolkBlues said:

-cut 10 more lbs so I'm sitting around 165 most of the time, at which point I should have a...

Nope.  Went down, went back up, but now I'm doing a 24 hr fast from Saturday morning after breakfast to Sunday, and this has been going really really well, actually.  I'm excited about my progress.

On 1/14/2015 at 8:23 AM, RealFolkBlues said:

    -six pack

Nope, cuz of the above.  We'll see.

Again, aestheticism and even pure strength take a distant back seat to ability to perform martial arts/fight, so my main goals are as follows:

    -Improve (really learn any) grappling

Totally did this! I started doing Brazilian Jiujitsu in August and have made some real gains in my grappling game.  I have a decent Americana! Watch out, world!

On 1/14/2015 at 8:23 AM, RealFolkBlues said:

-Get some cage experience with my betters and have the cardio/muscular endurance to consistently roll with competitive fighters

Sort of did this.  I have rolled with and sparred with my BJJ and Muay Thai coach (same guy, total badass natch,) and it's not really my conditioning that stops me so much as his feet and hands.  Haven't done a ton, but enough to know that I'm not that bad off on this.

On 1/14/2015 at 8:23 AM, RealFolkBlues said:

    -Box

Been doing Muay Thai! I would still like to just straight up box (totally an option at my fight gym,) but boxing is at the same time as BJJ, and I probably need to grapple more.

On 1/14/2015 at 8:23 AM, RealFolkBlues said:

-Finish my pudao form and concurrently become decent with the weapon

Nope.  Forgot/neglected this one.  It would be cool, but it's not super high on my list of priorities.

On 1/14/2015 at 8:23 AM, RealFolkBlues said:

-Learn how to do a kip-up (just for fun)

Nope.  Never really put in much time on this, either.

My number one fitness goal for this year, though? Become a personal trainer/MA instructor. I got a plan, don't worry.

I got my ACE personal trainer certification on the 29th! And, as of this past Tuesday, I have a client! Getting this ball rolling, damn it! Feeling good about it, to be honest.

Sorry for the long post, everybody, but good luck to everyone on their own goals! Let's do this, bros! :)

    What he said. :)

  15. Hey guys! Haven't posted in a month of Sundays, but hope everyone is doing well! A cursory glance shows many of the same old faces, and I'm sure you guys are crushing the weights/goals and making them your bitches as you fine people always do! My own progress has been all over the board, though mostly good.  Too much to post right now, but I'll try and catch up with you guys soon.

Speaking of MAGFest, we gonna do a MAG workout? I was super bummed to miss it last year, and I want to make sure I have my shit together for it this year.

  16. Good work again, zircon! I'm sure there will be more hairy man pics to come. ;)

Soul Splint: how's Romanian deadlift for you? That's what I've been doing, and it seems like at least there's less action on the knees, if not necessarily less stress.

I've been busy as hell so I haven't had much chance to log in here or Fitocracy even.  I need to get on it, I suppose.  My cut has been going okay, if slow.  It's hard for me to really keep to IF and my calorie count given two jobs, a four year old, and a 21 year old girlfriend who is not bound by the same dietary and time restrictions.  Less qq, though, more pew pew.  I know.  My lifts have mostly gone okay considering that I am usually working around 2000, 2100 calories a day (at least a few hundred under what I figure I should be at.)  It's hard to know, really.  My activity level is all over the place from day to day.  Like I've said before, my life's a mess right now.  Still though, I made all my new 1rms: 225 bench, 285 squat, 165 push press, 345 deadlift.  I got squashed a lot though, on my 5's and 3's.  That was mostly on my upper body stuff, so next mesocycle I'm going to keep the same targets for bench and push press.  I probably will make my goals for push press and squat for the year, but I'm really not too worried about it for bench and haven't set one for the deadlift.  405 lol? No idea there.
