  1. questions that i can't find answers for:

    1. how do you add stuff like the time, location, etc. to your HUD? in single player, that is. i don't want to touch multiplayer yet, i'm enjoying what i'm doing in my little dirt bunker in the hills so far.

    ShowFPS does that for me.

    2. i know there's a water source block...what does it look like? how does it function? i can't find anything, and the minecraft wiki doesn't really tell me much.

I think if it's a water block that is two tiles deep. it'll also be a source. I don't remember fully though.

    3. i die a lot. besides having to go retrieve my stuff, is there any other penalty?

Just teleporting back to spawn and having to find your way back again.

  2. Final Fantasy IX - Dark Messenger

    http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=MmYSy9U78Sc

Like some sort of apocalyptic "We Will Rock You", this one starts off foreboding and then the drums build up leading into a nice growling guitar/organ mix. Once it gets going it really emphasizes just how dangerous the guy you're fighting is.

Final Fantasy V - Clash on the Big Bridge

So you get about halfway through the game, when suddenly another seemingly major villain pops up. Then this tune starts playing and thats it with the expository banter! It's time to fight like men! And ladies! And ladies who dress like men! Fast-paced, well constructed, and catchy as hell.

  3. Yeah, I'm hoping that Notch comes up with a better way to prevent griefing in multiplayer. There seems to be a never ending supply of assholes who pop on to people servers with no more intent than to mess everyone's stuff up for their own stupid amusement.

I think there's a mod for it. MCAdmin is able to do that sort of thing I think.

Speaking of mods. Two I found entertaining.

Skylands - replaces the map with floating islands/dungeons/hidden treasure, and turns it into more of an adventure mode.

Runecraft - Lets you use magic by creating runes on the ground by arranging your materials in certain patterns. Teleport is quite handy.

  4. I downloaded it (I think) from the Alpha download link, but when I tried to open it, my compy didn't know what program to use and I didn't neither. I figured I had to buy it for that feature to work, so I deleted it and tried to play it online.

I'd figured he'd have the server issues, but I didn't think he would be the only one that can fix it. I'll just have to wait until tomorrow I guess.

Yeah it doesn't save with the exe extension for some reason. Just rename it Minecraft.exe and it'll work.

  5. Caved in and bought the special edition after hearing the soundtrack included. I don't even have a PC, I'll play on my girlfriend's.

In any case when I've played myself for a bit I'm up for multiplayer with nice people.

I tried MP as germans right away with one other person as Egypt. Me and him were on the same team. First thing he does is trespass on every single city state he comes across until they all get so pissed that each city state declares permanent war on our team. This of course gets the other actual civs to declare war on us too because they all give the destroy Egypt quest. He starts laughing and comments on how if this was Civ IV I'd have a deathstack of units heading for my city right now. He's sitting on a defensible peninsula, and I'm pretty much in the middle of the continent.

The AI focuses on him though, and I muster up a couple units and attack England. Unfortunately I start running really low on money.(Not used to the economy yet) I propose a trade with Egypt and he gives me a city instead saying better to have a gold mine than gold...and my debt gets worse and I lose a unit to debt. He starts laughing again, and I go to diplomacy, make peace with one of the teams, and trade the city to Japan for money...who promptly razes the city much to his dismay. Before I could continue attacking England though, the game stuck at waiting for other players.(And neither of us had a turn) Was a hilarious first game. Though pretty confusing at first.

The recommended system req for Civ 5 (taken off of steam):

First time I'm ever seeing quad core and directx 11 in game specs.

I was thinking about getting, and then I looked at these system req, and then I smiled, and then I went:

":D... my computer can't run this." and then I headdesked.

I have a single core 2.4 GHz processor and 2.5 GB of RAM and it's not bad. Turns take a bit long sometimes(About 20 seconds at most)

  6. Safari Hunt, a light gun shooter for the Sega Master System.

    Thank you, Tectoy.

That game is awesome, played it way more than Hang On! and I still play it now and then.

I think the first one I played was Scorched Earth or Duke Nukem 1. Either that or Munchman for TI-99/4a. I can't really remember.

  7. Honestly, I think the online pass makes sense for all the reasons EA gives. Used sales hog their online resources without paying for it. This helps pay for it. I'm OK with that.

That doesn't make sense. The original user isn't using it anymore. Selling a used game does not mean there are now 2 users instead of 1(if it was, then that WOULD be piracy).

  8. Capture a Great Jaggi? D: I don't even know how to use traps efficiently yet!

Haha I felt the same way. It took three tries for me to do it without killing it. There's another capture mission afterwards that I've been ignoring. Tried fighting a Barroth last night(unsuccesfully). Pretty much any sharpness other than green bounces off of him. I'll probably have to switch to lance or something...

  9. Bumping this thread because this seems to belong here.

I just dicovered a new free game named Hero Core (

) and played a bit of it. It's kind of a mix of Metroidvania and oldschool bullet hell shmups. So far I like it! It has this weird retro feel to it, even though it doesn't really look like a game from any specific old console. Apparently it was released yesterday.

Pretty awesome. Definitely give it a try if you haven't.

  10. The best video game movie would be Streets of Rage. Just think of it: no plot, no character development, just cops beating the shit out of gangs members with violence escalating to the point where it's so unrealistic and ridiculous that it's like one of those terrible grindhouse movies that are so terrible and funny that they just become awesome. Robert Rodriguez to direct it. Maybe Tarantino if he can wrap his head around a movie that has basically no dialogue, unless it's funny. Stunts get more and more insane, from dirty bare fisted fighting to guns to brass knuckles and bottles to machine guns to shooting rocket launchers. People being thrown into barrels that explode for no reason. The movie should also reflect the physics engine of the game, so that if someone runs at you and does a flying kick you can simply "punch" them out of the air, because, for some reason, a simple punch has higher priority that a running jump kick. Runtime 80 minutes. Rated R.

STREETS OF RAGE 1: THE STREETS OF RAGE.

It's either that or Contra. Contra could work better.

2 solid hours of "BARE KNUCKLE! BARE KNUCKLE! BARE KNUCKLE! BARE KNUCKLE!"

    I'm down with it.

  11. Now Ryugi, THERE was a boss.

I'm playing through on bitter. Boy was he ever. The only one to kill me so far on this playthrough.(Alice came close too, though) I'm not looking forward to Batt.

I've died more at Ryuji's bike battle than all other parts of the game combined.

  12. In my experience, there are two distinct ways a boss may be difficult.

One is that it has a set of moves which are difficult to counter or dodge, but can be. It may have high HP or a small attack window, but these bosses are difficult in a fun way. They provide a tangible challenge but it's clear that they can be beaten with enough work and persistence.

And then there are stupid bosses with unpredictable moves that can't be read or countered. The boss isn't really hard, he can just do a bunch of ridiculous things which put you in a bad place very quickly.

Guess which one inspired me to make this entry?

The final boss of No Mores Heroes 2 has more cheap tricks than a prostitute. Let's go through them.

For starters, he can instant kill you (by punching you out a window) if he hits you in the wrong part of the room relative to him. Boom. All of a sudden you've got to maneuver and keep yourself out of that line of sight. May be easy enough on its own, sure, but let's continue.

About a third of the way through the battle, he starts up a teleportation attack. Okay, we've seen these before. Probably not so difficult to counter. But just you wait. He can teleport right behind you at any time and smack you. What does he do then? Teleport again and smack you again. And a third time for good measure. Oh, and he can do this three-teleportation attack three or even four times in a row. It cannot be reliably dodged or blocked because you can't see where he is in time.

The interesting thing is that none of his attacks, individually, take off that much damage. It's almost like a taunt. "I dare you to beat me with more than half your health remaining." Given this, it still sounds plausible I can do it. I'm a patient guy, and I know his strategy for the most part. Even if he can sucker punch me at will and I dodge roll like crazy in the hopes of avoiding it, I'll just keep doing it til I knock him down enough. Of course, when he keeps teleporting around that becomes ass-kickingly hard to do.

And the coup de grace. In the last third of the fight, he gets a new teleportation attack. "What could possibly be worse than getting sucker punched up to twelve consecutive times?", you ask?

How about Tornado punched? Same attack, but now he tosses you across the room with the power of wind each time. And that can come before, after, or sandwiched between regular teleportation attacks.

Picture this. You've persevered against the guy for a good while. You're about 2/3 down after using the health refill, but he's down for the count as well. Just maybe 10 or 12 more good hits...

He comes at you with the teleportation. SHITSHITSHIT... wait! I dodged it! I'm dodging! Let me roll away... crap he tornado punched me! But where did I end up... fuck.

    Out the window.

I haven't beaten him yet. Other bosses in this game prove Suda 51 knows how to make a great boss fight. One that's unique, challenging, and lets you have a fighting chance and not getting half your health knocked off by a random combination of attacks he may or may not perform. Considering the bosses are the focus of the game, I'm pretty pissed off they decided to end the game with such a lousy one. He's not hard. I faced previous bosses much harder. But it's completely up to chance (if he doesn't do certain moves or I'm lucky enough to dodge them) as to whether I can beat him. Ever.

Beat him my first try. The second form didn't give me too much trouble. The teleportation is a pain, though. The worst part was figuring out how to defeat the first form.(I was trying to knock it out of the window each time when it was stunned and happened to get the blade clash by accidentally moving my remote fast enough for a slash). After watching a recorded video of him using the crappy teleport moves constantly though, I'd say I was probably lucky.

When it comes to final battles, Jeane and Henry blow this guy out of the water.

  13. Ragequit on NMH2's haunted house boss. Has anyone figured out a good way to beat him?

Not sure if its the best way, but he doesn't seem to have any glaring weakness besides swinging a slow and unwieldy axe. Clear the room of furniture though so you can dodge his flame attacks, and just let him use that axe and counter each time(Don't continue it too long or he'll start up another swing before you can dodge it). Careful with the blade clashes too, as I have no idea how it determines who wins that type. Normal ones I pretty much always win, but I have no idea what it was asking for in that one(I just kinda swung the remote around like a lasso, which sometimes worked)

  14. TI-99/4a

Tunnels of Doom - An RPG that played off of Audio Tapes. Thats right. Find the Rainbow Orb and save the King before the monsters of the tunnels kill them, then escape.

Super Demon Attack! - A shmup that takes place on the moon and you shoot at THE DEMONS.

Munchman(Alright, yes it is a shameless clone of Pacman, but I liked it better.)

    Parsec - Sidescrolling Shmup

Burger Time - Action. This was also in arcades a long time back but it's still pretty good.

  15. Well, how about:

Gungrave- Probably one of the most overlooked arcade shooters I can think of. Oozes style. And its impossible not to get pumped when the first thing that flashes across the screen of each stage is "KICK THEIR ASS"

    Ever heard of the anime?

    http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=OP5TzOahu2I

If you do check it out, I recommend you start with episode 2. 1 kind of starts things off on the wrong foot and is pretty much repeated as a later episode when it makes more sense to have it. The series is mainly a big back story of the games(From before he becomes Grave, though it ends differently). Same guy that did Trigun too.

But since this is hidden game gems and not hidden anime gems,

The Lone Ranger for the NES was surprisingly good for being a series adaptation.

  16. Rambo FPSer here. I'll rush you and I'm fairly accurate with my fire. Only problem is if the other person is just as accurate they'll probably have a slight advantage there. I tend to go into firefights knowing I'll get hurt, and after everyone is dead, I make my way to the health/armor pickups. This has worked very well for me in Timesplitters and Quake. I've changed that somewhat in Halo(The tactic doesn't work so well when you're practically forced to walk slowly everywhere and your enemies can heal themselves at leisure)

Oh if I know the other person has some super weapon(Rocket launchers, BFG, etc) and knows how to use it, I'll tend to approach more cautiously, though my tactic still tends to be get in close quickly and hit hard and accurate.
