  1. The piano really jumped out at me as an issue. The samples themselves were a bit thin and the excessive reverb only made it distant. When the main melody from Dearly Beloved enters it's a bit better but it's still stiffly sequenced and the reverb is a bit too much. The reverb also made sure the piano took the back seat when the lonely gated saw entered. Panning it hard left and leaving it dry like that makes it unfocused and sudden. It's also much louder than the section after it, giving the track a strange uneven flow.

Arrangement had some nice idea with the added piano melodies but could've done more to move away from the same motif/chords.

Overall this needs more work to make it cohesive and interesting. Work on those sounds, make some proper transitions and make sure it all works together. Keep it up!

  2. This is a pretty solid track. Like others before me have said, the arrangement is a bit conservative. You definitely could've altered the melodies a bit, especially considering how many times you run through them. However there are some modifications including chords, bridge and solo.

Production was a bit thin, definitely could've added some more bass presence and panned out the rhythm guitars to make them a bit more spacious. Wouldn't have a problem with a volume push either ;)

This is balancing on the edge here because both production and arrangement could've been kicked up a notch. However, I think it just squeaks by. Do take the criticism to heart for your next sub though.

    YES(borderline)

  3. This will be one hell of an album! I'm a huge fan of Iwatsuki's work (and I've played Tekken 6 with him, he's good with King) and I'm even part of this album. Trust me when I say this will be an extremely diverse tribute to one of the industry's great composers. Artists from Japan and the west are all gathered :)

So yeah, definitely keep an eye out guys because this is gold.

  4. Probably just easier to wait for Liontamer on irc, but I might as well make a thread for source questions. Unless there's already one, but none of my search words found it.

The standards say a source must be written for the game to be valid. I don't think that's what Tchaikovsky had in mind when he wrote the Swan Lake.

, the one at 2:07 is the one I'm interested in.

My question is whether I can remix it for ocr or not. If Tetris music is valid, shouldn't this be too?

Well, no. We still use the "must be specifically written for the game" guideline. Tetris is a special case if only because that's what it's mostly known for and I have a sneaking suspicion OCR weren't aware of this until long after some Tetris remixes were posted.

    Sooo.. nah. :/

  5. there's a definite departure from older FF OSTs in this one, but i think it's tied to the fact that you're not in an area long enough to really get a strong melody out of it. it's more a film score - thirty seconds to make a point - than a game score - loop foy lyfe - as far as i can see.

he's not black wakka, he's just tan wakka =) he IS a polynesian, after all.

I refuse to acknowledge any Wakka-imitations if they aren't voice by Joe DiMaggio :banghead:

  6. Heh, just picked up my Collector's Edition and it seems like someone accidentally put in an extra decal :nicework:

That's about all I can say so far, no time to play the bloody game.. but maybe I'll ignore studying just for tonight...

  7. I'd describe it as "American Beauty OST meets Synths + Chiptunes"...

With my love for minimalism this especially warms my heart.

Just wanted to thank you guys for your support but right now it seems like I "called you over" to get some backup and I just want to make sure everyone realizes that's not the case :P

Anyway, thanks for the kind words guys and I encourage the discussion!

  8. Nice choice of software Al, I feel close to you already!

Sadly though I could basically copy+paste Larry's vote here. The structure and sounds were to similar to the original to be considered an interpretive arrangement. Even the melodies stayed relatively close to the source. You could definitely do more here and I can tell you could pull it off. Go the extra OCR-mile!

    NO(resubmit)

  9. With Larry back for a visit on the panel it's hard to add something new to the vote, very few times has I disagreed with him. So I'll just point out the biggest issues for me then. Drums were flimsy and lacked body, the track in general was heavy on the high/mid and lacked any proper low/low-mid frequencies. The flutey instrument handling the melody can't really carry the track and the strings are a bit muddy but thin. It feels like you could space out the sounds more, get some more meat in there to make the track sound full.

This track does show a lot of promise and the personalization is well on it's way. I suggest spending some more attention to creating a full soundscape and maybe taking some additional turns with the melody and backing. Great start!

  10. It's not meant in a harsh way!

EDIT: Merely just some constructive criticism. I enjoyed your themes on the most part, and can see that you've got some great potential. Better than what I can write anyway. ;)

Yeah, I didn't take offense or anything but I just wondered about a few things you wrote so I'll go ahead and ask them here. If you prefer to answer them in private just send me a PM or an e-mail to mattias@anosou.com and I'll edit this post.

"The same superficial sound effects are used in each, the developments in each track are mostly unimpressive, and overall, each theme emanates a laid back atmosphere."

Does "superficial sound effects" mean the instruments? And if so, is that bad because they're re-used? I can only think of, say, orchestral soundtracks and many other indie game soundtracks that re-use instruments and I don't understand how it's a bad thing. Same thing about "laid back atmosphere", don't see how it's a bad thing.

"Although Häggström Gerdt wished to give each theme a unique feel, each theme is mostly the same."

I thought this was just plain wrong

"As well as this, much of the same devices in this theme are used in "Variations on Navigation (Map)" which is also a bit quirky, yet ultimately pretty droll."

This is four different variations on the map theme, re-using the instruments specific to each world when you're in that part of the map. The re-using of instruments in this track is intentional to provide more context on the world map.

"though still inferior to what most trained or professional artists would create."

That's just harsh :D You didn't say why it was inferior and make it sound like I'm not trained nor professional.

    "The most original contribution"

I'd like to at least know why the other tracks weren't "original". Original compared to what? Why?

"It's nice to hear something a little different after hearing the hearing the same sound six times in a row."

I don't really understand this. The instrumentations, melodies and rhythm are all different in the tracks. The only thing is I used a similar overall "sound" to create a cohesive soundtrack that didn't sound like it was from 5 different games.

"With such a good background, one would assume that OCR's first original game music release would be a decent album with solid, unique themes. The Kaleidoscope Original Soundtrack, though, falls short of the mark in this regard, being quite short and mostly repetitive."

To me, this seems selling it a bit short by comparing it to much bigger productions/titles. It especially nags me about "solid, unique themes" since it seems taken out of thin air without any explanation or reference to why it's not "unique" or "solid". I agree that it's short and while it's not strange for a small indie production to have a short soundtrack, I do wish it was longer. However I need to defend the "mostly repetitive" part. First because I don't understand how you think all songs sound the same and secondly because Kaleidoscope uses an interactive score that adds different layers to the track. All tracks are one minute long but consist of 5 layers, the soundtrack pieces artificially fades in these layers to create an "album edit". While I understand that might not have been clear I thought it was worth mentioning anyway, much as like the map theme.

  11. You're all wrong obviously, stagnant genres are cool. Armored Core is a great series of games. Extremely bold new games are good, Sapce Giraffe is one of the best ever. Final Fantasy XIII will not by definition influence most other RPGs for years to come. Sakaguchi can only write mediocre but enjoyable stories. Most FF games were good because they were right in the time and had a good team backing them, the synergy.

Now go sit down in your couch and play some games instead.

  12. did anyone actually watch the video at the bottom

in both smallscreen and fullscreen the difference is nigh unidentifiable and while i'm no expert i've generally got a good eye for these things

i see nothing to worry about here people are making it sound like the x360 version looks like a micheal's corner drawing

    Pretty much my thoughts exactly.

    michael ffs

Anyway, 360er's got a better deal on this than us PS3er's got on Bayonetta. So, as inclined as I am to laugh at the reduced quality, I will not.

    Bayonetta killed kittens everywhere.
