  1. I really like this format better but can see how format variety would spice things up. This format seems like it makes things easier on the mixers cuz they get up to a two week break to rest. As for voting being hard, so what? It's not like your favorite mixer is going to get eliminated. In the last competition it pained me to see several mixers get ousted early like Prototype Rapter and Jake Snake just because they were pitted against equally awesome remixers. I like this format because it seems like it promotes a better environment for learning.

    1) You can't get eliminated which means you can continue to practice and improve.

    2) You can learn from team mates and adapt some of their skill set in order to bolster your own.

    3) If your a seasoned mixer you can get your name out there just by making more mixes. This exposure can lead to more job opportunities etc.

  2. This thread seems dead :( Time to attempt some defibrillator action and incite a flame war. There were so many good mixes this round too. Here are my unprofessional critiques. Take them with a grain of salt too.

    Blast Counter

The dub step stuff in the background doesn't seem like it meshes well with the rest of the instrumentation even though its fairly soft. Song is slower to get going and transitions slowly between sections. Not a bad thing though. I think this mix would have benefited from some more drastic change up. Seemed too safe to me. Instrument selection is well chosen. I really enjoy the effects for the intro and outro. Very cool idea :)

    Bring the Heat

Seems a little bland with just the piano at the start. Maybe layer some other melodies softer behind it to spice things up. Some type of percussion effects might help too. Outro fade out is OK I guess. The actual melody throughout the song is well done. I really think layering would make this song vastly more intriguing.

    Combustive Explosion

I really dig the chill vibe this song gives off. The volume and echo effects are expertly applied and truly make this piece shine. The melodies are fluidly interwoven. I think you lucked out since both themes seemed to fit the chill mood. Kudos to your remixing abilities. Looking forward to more of your music. Great style.

    Dr. Wiwwy, Polarized

Instrumentation choice is a bit on the slightly shrill side. I commend you on blending both themes so well. Seems like the sources aren't a very good fit. The melody and transitions in your music always keep me interested. Great work!

    The Fall

Voice work is truly amazing. Wish I could sing that well. Music wise I think greater variation and change ups throughout the song could make it better. I guess it the style you chose in which case it works well. Voice = wonderful -> Music = more variation.... I'm being too hard on everyone... This was made in a week after all. With that thought this is a wonderful mix. I couldn't make anything this good in a week lol.

    Hornet of Legend

Has an uplifting simple Celtic feel :) Great idea to stylize the music this way. Makes it stand out in a great way. Themes are blended very well. Makes me think of "How to Train Your Dragon" for whatever reason :) The song evokes a kind of playful learning atmosphere. Great job!

Planes, Trains, and Auto 'n' Beat

The faster pace of the background sorta messes with me throughout the song. It can easily distract you from the main melody which I think is a bad thing. I listened to the song a lot to try and figure out the good and bad points. Maybe making the main melody more pronounced and toning down the rest of the music would help. I can't pin point what makes me agitated in the song. I think it feels like the music accompanying the melody forcefully rushes it and it detracts from the overall piece. I'll stop digging any deeper in my hole now... Still its an interesting song.

Proud Warrior of a Forgotten Kingdom

I really like this song even though it isn't very long. Doesn't seem finished with fairly sudden end. Maybe you ran out of time? It would be great if you spent some more time on it outside the competition. Seems like it could blossom into a very nice piece :)

    Robot Lounge

You really nailed the chilled out vibe :) I think the main instrument for shadow man's theme towards the beginning could be switched out for another one. Seemed a bit "Meh". Later on it fits well. Trumpet solo sounded really good. Themes were blended well. Ending could be made more grandiose. Excellent mix as the result of a one week stint. Please polish it a bit more and submit it :)

    Shining Groove

This had a similar feel to Phonetic's. Background music / beat seems to rush the main melody and detract from the song. Can't be helped I guess. Source themes weren't exactly a match made in heaven lol. Cymbals? seems overused. Instrument choices don't seem to mesh with each other as well as other mixes. Still this is a descent song. Themes were mixed okay.

    Tower Power Boogie

Like the old west style throughout :) Cool idea. Seems like your mix could use some more layering of alternate blended ad-libbed melodies. Maybe some occasional light percussion. Song was a bit short. Shaker and some old west whistling could be good additions to the song. Maybe add some wind blowing through the desert sound effects. Please continue to expand on this song and submit it. It has great potential!

    Wily's Bubble Bath

Mellow vibe fits Effervescence's theme well :) I like the lounge style. You could swing in a hammock and sip on an Arnold Palmer in the summer breeze. Good stuff. Song's length is just right too. Soft intro and fade out outro work well. Well done Guitarzan

  3. STOP RIGHT THERE, CRIMINAL SCUM! >:]

If you guys don't stop with these silly Internet memes, then it's likely that Darke would wipe the slate clean of them and we'd be back to having more aimless civil conversation. Be glad no one's jailed for that yet >_>

Ummmmm.... He already did it once....

Last time it involved the exploitation of the team name "The Hard Men". There were pictures, minor greek Gods, and a whole lotta other random good stuff ;)

PS: SuperiorX your picture was the funniest... and Darke please don't strike this comment from the thread lol.

  4. All,

Here is a very unprofessional review ranked in order of my preference. Please take it with a grain of salt. Thanks for making all these wonderful songs!

    1) Far From Home

You know it's a good song when it ends and you weren't even staring at the slider bar lol. Seriously though the tropical arctic vibe along with the snazzy vocals is very mellowing and causes the head to bob along with the beat ;) AWESOME stuff

    2) Attracted To Power

Gario never disappoints. Nuff said. The blending of the themes is handled well and the change ups keep the song fresh throughout :) Maybe changing up the instruments more could make it a bit better but its only a guess from a guy who hasn't ever really mixed anything. I couldn't really find anything bad to say about this piece.

    3) Light Your Way

I'm not a big fan of the acoustic parts but thats just my preference. The selling point of this piece is how the artist makes sure you never get bored with the song. Constant change ups and reinterpretations of the themes will ensure the audience never grows tired or can predict what will come next. Great work!

    4) Shadows Of Wily

It pained me not to put this in the top three because it was so awesome :( I've never liked shadow man's music but Amphibious not only managed to blend both themes expertly, he made shadow man's music sound soooooo good :) Mad props to you amphibious. Wish it were a bit longer though. Thus song will remain in my playlist for a very long time :)

    5) No Ticket!

Another great song that didn't quite make my top. I love the special effects that you incorporated throughout the song. They made the song feel very authentic and like you were at a train crossing while the train whizzed by. I can't say anything bad about this piece. I wonder if it could be improved if you went off in ad-lib land and came back tying it to one of the themes. Good Stuff :)

    6) Wily's Inferno

41 seconds seemed like a bit of a long time before the real song started. That said once the song got started it was very good. I thoroughly enjoyed the WillRock solo sections :) To me it seems the themes were performed more separately from one another and not blended so much. A great piece nonetheless.

    7) The Root of All Things.

The Wily theme is a bit more dominant in this song and the Plant Man theme is more subdued but it plays well. The softer melody is somewhat soothing. Personally I think straying a bit further from the sources could really make this a far more interesting piece. A solid piece nonetheless.

8 ) Mr. X was Wily the WHOLE TIME

The instrument choices didn't seem to mesh with one another so well but this fact sort of gave the whole song a very unique vibe :) I kinda like the feel of it. I could see this being used in a castlevania game in a section where your Belmont character is trudging through a maze with lots of fodder monsters. Nice work!

    9) Glacial Age

Your a brave man to create a primarily piano piece Mr. L. This is a very different piece that is simple yet soothing. This is a great one to listen to while playing Skyrim and exploring the arctic tundra.

    10) Glitch in the System

I love the drum beats at the beginning. Didn't care for the organ so much. The voices samples were interesting especially with the echo added. I think the song could be improved with the layering of more instruments. Also a more broad interpretation of the pieces could give you the space needed to blend the themes more successfully. The themes felt a bit forced together during the last 50 seconds. This is still a good piece.

    11) Smooth Heat

Didn't seem very adventurous with the interpretation of both songs but a very solid piece nonetheless. It sounds too similar to some of the other remixes already posted on OCR though… Add more flare, ad-lib, and throw caution to the wind and I think you could make this piece really stand out :)

    12) whatever.jpg

This is a very soft piece. Not my cup of tea but I suppose it would be great to try and go to sleep to this piece. It sorta reminds me of Jayson Litrio's wedding piece. Good work :)

  5. But... that's not even the same mix...

    Laugh = Double Doctors

    Chipmunk = Dubious Brother

    .............

My bad your right. I actually like the snake man voice in Ben's song :)

PS: Looking forward to some Akumajo goodness :)

Double Doctors - Main Finger put together some class remixes last time, and he's carrying on the trend here. Overall a solid piece of work, and for the most part this was awesome stuff. Pretty decent production, and the arrangement was cool, but it has to be said, I thought doubling gemini man's theme was a cool idea that didn't work out so well at the tempo it was... it felt rushed and unnatural. Also, I can't say I liked the use of the sample... it made me think a little too much of some shitty youtube poop videos for my liking.

    Good mix

  6. Dubious Brother - aww man I'm digging wily's theme in here. Another mix that broke my heart not to put it in the top 3 but that goes to show just how solid all these tracks were this round. There was an awesome arrangement going on here, and the production was fine... it has quirks but nothing that detracts from the music.

I thought the use of the sample was cool, but it did borderline annoying for me, can't understand why tho... sorry ben, I know you dig that sample! :P

At least I'm not the only one who felt the same way lol

  7. if you don't like dr. wily's laugh being used in a wily remix competition why are you even here what does your life even mean

Dude, I don't remember that voice in any of the original NES games. I enjoy most of the music everyone creates here a lot. I think even WillRock said it was borderline annoying in his own words in his review. I'm sure you wouldn't tell him that his life has lost all meaning lol. It's just that I think the song would've benefited more without that sound clip. Only my opinion and I respect that everyone else may not agree with it.

BTW: Can you use that picture I made, do I need to improve upon it, or does anyone even care about. Just asking

  8. I do believe you can open your garageband files in logic so thats a fair choice... it has good plug in support but doesn't have VST which might be slightly limiting... not so much so as Reason however, which is self contained (I use Reason). It might be worth a logic guy to comfirm this stuff for sure... Rozo??? :P

If anyone has used both which one would you prefer if you were just starting out?

Will thanks for the reply :) I'll eventually get something but opted for a full sized semi-weighted keyboard controller last time we spoke. Its made composing sooooooo much easier even though I'm musically uneducated. Maybe I should just take the plunge "purchase Reason" and struggle through learning how it works for a couple weeks.

  9. I mean, dang, I understand ripping me apart, cuz mine sucked

Don't feel bad ZTM. I wish I was experienced and felt as confident as you to even join the competition lol. I'd be dead last and laughed out of the competition if I were to join (I know this isn't true cuz you guys are all too nice).

Just keep at it man and eventually you'll be as good as the top remixers on the site :) If I know anything its that persistence is key to accomplishing great things.

BTW: Any tips on upgrading from Garage Band to a real software suite? I haven't bought Reason yet but maybe I can convince myself it will be a good Christmas present to myself ;) I just don't know if I can adjust to it....

  10. This is awesome guys :) Please get Gecko to join in the fray! I'd love listening to more music with his style. I'm also glad to see Prototype Raptor and Jake Snake back. Too many fabulous artists :)

PS: I dare someone to use a Theremin...

PSS: You've inspired me to continue working on my 2D shooter game! I'm using a verlet physics engine. It sucks now but I gotta keep working on it :)

  11. Get me a guitarist that's interested and I'll remake this one from scratch. I will not touch this with a ten foot pole otherwise. Make it happen, guys.

Also, best of luck with the Concrete man remix - considering it's popularity online, I'm surprised it wasn't remixed... it feels like making a Megaman II album without a Wily remix .

Let's all ask Sixto if he is interested :) I'd love to see the awesomeness of a Gario and Sixto collaboration :)

  12. I enjoyed these songs a lot (In no particular order)

The Tragic Drowning Of Heat Man (Catchiest beat, I keep coming back)

Hard Day's Night (Seamless blending of two themes)

Hardly Clubbed To Death (Such a strong personality for a remix)

The Toad Gang's Heist (Great mello sly cooperish feel. The title suits it)

Wonderful Shadows By The Electric Sheep Orchestra (Diggin the Hawaiian Vibe :)

Pull The Plug (Just keeps building up the epicness and playing off itself)

Total Eclipse Of The Sun (Another great catchy beat)

Switchblade Fangs (I can't describe it... Mello trance goodness? :)

Windswept Bubbles (Gario's mixes are always awesome. PS: Crystal Snail and Armored Armadillo combination music is awesome. I desire more)

    Air Friction (A wonderful remix)

PS: I'd really like to hear more music by Jake Snake and Prototype Raptor. I feel they got knocked out too early. (No offense to the winners who had awesome mixes. It's just you hate when two great remixers are paired up cuz one of em has to get knocked outta the tourney)
