[Rexy] Yes, the mix churned in was pretty much the result of some death metal vocal training during the mix week and the desire to make a melodic metal arrangement out of Splash Woman after experimenting with 3 other genres. Think Arch Enemy meets Dethklok meets Children of Bodom and you've probably got the idea of what happened with this one. [brandon] You should talk about what the song meant for you as it is ur FURST GRUWL SUNG! [Rexy] Of course I know what it meant for me; I haven't done non-choir-chant vocals in a song for 5 years, past attempts at growling over the years were often met with a consensus of 'you suck', and yet I still appreciated the genre enough to understand the feel. So I'm practically coming out of the fish tank on this one, which I think was a huge step up in regards to confidence [brandon] I made the song I wanted to make and I like it, and Rexy screamed on it. And it's funny. I wrote the lyrics to keep it from getting british dry humor in it. It had to be wet. American wet comedy. [Rexy] Careful, if you look at American humor as 'watered down' you're guaranteed an automatic rejection! But either way, we both had great fun working on this thing, and hopefully you'd enjoy it as much as we did with the mix craft [brandon] Friday, friday, finished the song on Friday.. because I was looking forward to the weekend, weekend. Yes it has been done to death, but for good reason. David and I intended this song to tell a story. The old-vinyl intro brings to mind a crackly black-and-white film of a grandfather with his grandson on his lap, saying "Did I ever tell you about the big storm of 1942? Well son, it was amazing..." As the child gazes into his grandfather's eyes, the scene of the storm begins to unfold in black and white, and quickly morphs into full color 3D as the song drops. The cadence of the song continues to tell the story: the sky turns dark suddenly, wind picks up, temperature drops 20 degrees... a few raindrops begin to fall, but the storm recedes briefly... then whammo, the storm is in full force! Time to run for cover and hope the roof holds up! Rain spatters the windows and the wind howls... louder, faster... but then as quickly as it began, the storm ends and moves on... leaving a sense of calm and the earth refreshed, with puddles to splash in. We hope you enjoy "A Stormy Affair." After roughly two years of off and on work, here is a remix of Akira Yamaoka's "You're Not Here" from Silent Hill 3, entitled "Lacrimosa Profundis". This track was a collaboration of Children of the Monkey Machine, with guitars by Steve Pordon and vocals by Brandon Strader. The 8mib limit does affect sound quality slightly. Higher bitrate versions are available upon request and will also be posted with a conspicuous file name and easily linkable on the CotMM.org webpage upon acceptance and posting to OCR. Steve and I both enjoy working on Silent Hill music, and I've wanted to do more vocal tracks recently, so this seemed like an ideal match. Doubly so since the lyrical content is not specifically gendered. Steve and I began working on this track sometime around December of 2009. It wasn't until later February of the next year that it started to sound like the current version, however. By June of 2010 the instrumental structure had pretty much resolved into it's final form. It took several false starts with a few other individuals, myself included, before Brandon stepped in for the vocals to arrive at this release version. I hope you enjoy. I also had the chance to play its PS2 remake, Alter Code F, which drastically modifies some game elements, and feature an arranged soundtrack (in a true spaghetti-western style) by Michiko Naruke. About 90% into my first remix attempt, Jade and bLiNd sent me some feedback that, unfortunately, I wasn't ready to hear. Difficult times IRL leading to a grim re-evaluation of my life, plus a string of harsh critiques on most of my tracks for other OCR projects, made me react in a very impulsive and immature way. Responding admirably under the circumstances, Jade told me to calm down, take a step back and look at the big picture. This put in perspective for me the fact that, despite years of practice, I had more attitude than real musical proficiency. Fast forward a few weeks later, and a brand new remix was underway, merging elements of african, middle eastern, indian and east asian music, striving to take this sci-fi western for a wild wild trip around the world. Incorporating the Alter Code F version of the source (Ruined Town) and adding motifs from Rudy's theme (Migrant Bird of the Wilderness), I tried to recreate this tale of bravery, friendship, love, golems and illegal arms possession. xD In his quality of co-director, Stevo99 stepped up to help me circumvent my hearing impairment, providing invaluable feedback and making use of his mighty beard to master my track. Mad props to him! I also wanna thank Jade for being so patient and understanding, and for giving me a chance to remain onboard and set things right. Overcoming issues and finding the courage to start over made me realize that even after the chaos and destruction, you can still find a ray of hope, lying within the remains of what used to be despair. I had nearly forgotten about it for some reason until my friend JoePotato28 linked me to the song in the skype chat, and I said "Ohh, I remember this song" A remix of it from me was pretty much inevitable Although it was a long time in the making. I started it April 8, 2011, and had about a minute or so of material going, and it stayed in my projects file for quite some time...I think it was around July that I decided to work on it again, and got around to finishing the composition and uploading this mix on Youtube. Then just last night (11/23) I decided to clean up production a bit and submit to the panel. So yeah, about seven and a half months in the making with this one One other thing: In this mix you'll find many allusions (tributes, if you will) to a lot of the artists who have truly inspired me on OCR. This is my seventh submission. Please note that this track is a part of the Seiken Densetsu 3 Project Album. I have to say that I wasn't very familiar with the source track when I started remixing it. When I played Seiken Densetsu 3, I chose a storyline that didn't involve the Mirage Palace, so I never heard the music in game, nor did I see what the Mirage Palace actually looked like. Upon hearing the music, I imagined a crystalline place full of mirrors, mists and illusions, but then I checked some videos of it on Youtube and it turned out to be a far creepier dungeon! Thus, I decided to make this remix as weird as possible. I tried to make the song sound somewhat dissonant, unstable, almost a little incoherent, in order to encapsulate the feeling of illusions suddenly appearing and disappearing--hence the frequent sudden interruptions in an otherwise quite 'flowing' song. Also, to emphasize the contrast between the illusions (the apparitions of the heroes' loved ones and whatnot) and the true nature of the palace, I used instruments that sound almost as if they contradicted each other--for example, the piano, the celesta, and the glockenspiel sound extremely sweet and gentle and symbolize the scenes the heroes see in the palace, while the dramatic strings, the erratic woodwinds and the various symphonic slides, scratches, plucks etc. contribute to a rough horror-film sound. First, the song progresses and reaches its climax in the middle part, where I used a lot of choirs (singing Veritas omnia vincit – Truth conquers all – obviously in reference to the illusions in the palace) accompanied by some heavy percussion. The overall sound reminded me of the music played in Moria (from Howard Shore's Lord of the Rings soundtrack). The song then unwinds slowly (to let the guitar and the duduk shine) and ends with a creepy lullaby ending. At the risk of sounding like a pompous buffoon, I like the way this arrangement turned out. The source tune gets stale pretty quickly, so I tried to make this song as dynamic as possible. I hope you guys and gals enjoy listening to it. With this mix, I wanted to create an emotional and intimate version of the source material, by using just piano which is backed up by strings later in the mix. It's a fairly conservative mix compared to my usual mixes, since I din't alter much of the source, I just added a lot of original stuff to complement on the melody of the original. I think that the critiques on my previous remix are fixed in this submission, because the left and right hand are much more seperate (much more low and high frequenties instead of much in the middle), so it should be a lot less muddy than my previous remix. I hope that when people listen to this, they can truly relax and just enjoy the moment. That's the feeling I wanted this mix to have, at least. The mix: P.S. All my material is only from the first section since it contains many ideas which can be creatively altered. A quarter note bass line and a triplet ostinato drives this piece. (harp, piano, glockenspiel and electric piano are constantly but subtlety morphed around in this ostinato). At the middle of the piece the ostinato changes drastically into an arpeggiated motive. The main melody has a string and reedy timbre and acts as a refrain. Last I added two solos played by a distorted electric piano, almost to the point it sounds like an electric guitar. The piece climaxes on the second solo which is a flurry of arpeggios. Yes I know the title I gave it isn't too ... creative ... but the music is what matters right? I'm having a heck of a time finding the source parts in the three relatively, fairly ambient tracks. What I have matched up sounds pretty good arrangementally so far, and I suspect it is all in there, it's just a hunt and search sort of thing. I'd love a breakdown of what is where, because I think even if I did find enough to call it a pass I bet I would be missing even more. Production is definitely not where it needs to be. Emu is totally right that the lack of low end is really weird to listen to. I'm also not digging the guitar tone, which is super fuzzy. This is also combined with a fuzzy synth, so now there are two fuzzies going on at once. It could probably work for some of the sections, but I was definitely looking for some change sooner rather than later. Some areas are pretty crowded as well, 2:50 in particular has a ton going on that is very difficult to make out. Right now the production needs plenty of work. The low end especially needs to be filled out, and I think some clearer tones on the guitar and synths would help the overall clarity of the mix. If you resub, please be a dear and include a breakdown, too, for me! NO (Resubmit) -
There's a definite difference in the production compared to the original submission, but the rest of the arrangement is the same as before. Listening to it this time, I will agree with Andrew on the last vote that the noodling makes the track feel like there isn't a clear sense of direction going on. Despite that, I do feel like the piece does develop, and I do feel like there is development of the source material. I'm a little torn on this as a result. It's a close vote, for sure, and there are some factors that could be changed to make this a stronger candidate for a YES. For me, I think it is over the bar as is, but I can see other judges going the other way. Yes

I had to think on this one quite a bit. Personally I love the arrangement, and there's a lot of really good things going for it. It's definitely in the vein of The Megas, a sort of tribute to them, especially the spoken section near the end. Some of the issues I'm hearing that are making me uncomfortable with passing this are the timing issues all around. Most of it is slight but noticeable, and it's pretty often. I'd just love things to be tighter overall. I'm also feeling like the vocals are a little pasted on top, and could be integrated a little better into the soundscape. The last thing that bugs me is the last note drops pitch right at the end. It almost sounds like it could be intentional, but as a trumpet player it's bugging me personally. It's a really close call, and honestly I could go either way with it. I'm curious what the other judges think.

Totally awesome. I just listened to another sub that spent a lot of the track flirting around the melody, and this does so as well very nicely. As you mentioned, the textures in the mix really make it shine, and there's a ton of detail in all of the synths, panning, and production as a whole. Solid. YES -

Hooray for bass! Overall, a definite improvement in most of the areas I wanted to see addressed. The more I listen to this, the more I like how the theme is just out of sight. The allusions are there, and you really have to listen for them, but it makes the experience more gratifying when you do hear it. To nitpick, the ending is still feeling a bit overcrowded, and the parts are vying with one another at times. I'm also not sold on the stop-transition near the beginning, but I think neither are a deal-breaker this time. Good luck with the rest of the vote! YES -

Loooooove this source. It's super eclectic, and I agree that some sections would be pretty awesome as a metal breakdown. Right now the biggest issue that's going on with this track is that is a cover of the original, and there isn't much in terms of arrangement and your own personal flair to it, aside from the genre change of sections. Along with that, based on what I am hearing, it feels as though you are only interested in using some of the sections of the song, while the rest are left mostly alone. I'd suggest taking the sections you want and working with them, and either working some transitions between them, or maybe finding another source you might want to use with it. Don't feel trapped by the source! I'm noticing some timing slight timing issues, which aren't a huge thing, but they are noticeable. It's tough to play everything and keep it tight, but It's definitely something to strive for. I'd also work on the mixing and mastering; the bass feels pretty quiet, which is sucking the energy out of things and making the whole track feel pretty sparse. I do like your drum sequencing, it's all very appropriate to the track and shows a lot of personality. I gave you a ton to work on, and this track does need a lot of work, but there's some promise in here, too! I can really hear the idea you are going for from 1:27-1:45. I'd love to hear you fill out the other areas like that. I'm going to suggest you use our WIP forums to get some further feedback from our community, and keep working on things. NO -

Listening to the new version, I'm realizing just how hard the velocities on the piano are. I'm imagining someone playing it and slamming their hand down on the keys to get the same sound. It's not as much an issue when everything else comes in, but I'd love to hear it toned down in the intro. The other thing that popped out to me is that some of the sections feel cut-and-pasted; 1:38 is almost exactly the same as the section before it, for example. I feel that you could do a lot more to those sections, maybe add counter-melodies, or just cut the fat and shorten the song a bit. The production feels much less over-compressed, which is great, and overall the balance is good. I like the panning on the percussive elements, and I think you could even do a little more along those lines (not too much, though!). I'd still look into your velocities in the intro, and maybe see about doing some more to humanize parts as well. Definitely closer, but there's still some more that needs work. Keep at it!
