I really like your opening, it really works to break up the opening riff and give it a new flavor. The transition to crunchier bass is pretty cool as well, although I think you start to overuse that synth. The bass wobbling back and forth between headphones is pretty dizzying, gotta admit. I'd consider using the panning idea for a different instrument and especially use it less often. There's a decent amount of personality going on to the source, although I feel like the ideas you use get worn out and dragged on for too long. I'd like to hear more variation going on overall. The same can apply to the drum loops, which are pretty static throughout the mix. The last issue is your improv. section. It's cool, but also way too long away from the source for OCR. It would be cool if you could re-incorporate the source back in later into the section, or maybe cut down the improv to head back to the melody. You've got a start here, but it needs a lot of work. Ok ok, I'll actually listen to it. Hmm...not bad.... Definitely an ambient take on the themes, which get's a little repetitive at times, but there's a lot of personalization you've got here. I think the song fit's well for the style. Like the dropping bass later on, too. Guess you can mix on your own. YES

I think the arrangement you have going on here is pretty steller, but I can't say I'm as sold on the production side of things. It's not so much the sounds itself, but the balance and combination of 8-bit and orchestral. I can't say I'm as sold on how the two different sets of sounds are combined, with the 8 bit stuff being dry compared to the more reverbed orchestral sounds. It's a pretty close call for me overall, and while for now I'm going to say no, I'm very curious what the other judges have to say, and might be persuaded otherwise. NO (resubmit)

Emu nailed it. You've got a lot going on in terms of your instrumentation changeups, but this is still repetitive in the end due to the fact that it's the same melody over and over. I'd take his advice on adding another section, possibly another source to balance things out. Going to echo both gentlemen on the mixing issues, and that it's not really where it needs to be. The drums stick out the most in needing to be a bit beefier. I'm again on Emu's side of things where I felt it was less of an issue, but some overall polish would bring this one up a notch. Definitely closer. Arrangement-wise I'm liking the way you are presenting the sources. Production is what's holding you back on this. I felt like Andrew really covered all the basic points, but I'd like to add that there can be a little more done with the balance overall. The accordion felt pretty loud compared to the other instruments, and I felt like some areas were drowning things out, where others felt somewhat sparse. Hope you keep at it. NO(resubmit) -

Not much to add to what the gentlemen have said already. I will agree that this isn't super repetitive, but you do hear some of the same licks a few times in pretty much the same context, and overall there could be more of the little changes to keep things more interesting. The slower sections feel a little sparse, aside from the voice clips, as Andrew has said. Adding a little more there while not intruding on the voice would be a good start. NO -

Good source to work with. Right away I'm noticing that the bass is really pretty weak, and the whole mix sounds top-heavy as a result. Upping the bass volume is going to help the balance quite a bit. The sounds overall are generally pretty standard. There aren't any bad instruments here for what you're going for, but nothing really stuck out for me, either. The mix has some cool breakdowns, and I really liked the part at 1:25, but the transition into it is a bit rough and sudden. You go back to the main section a lot, which get's fairly repetitive quickly, and I'd like to hear more variation in that area. There's definitely a start here, but it needs some work. NO -
Thank you Emu for writing out what I couldn't really put my finger on before. The dubstep is oddly missing the serious WUBS, and it's a strange sound choice. I don't know if it was totally intentional, but I don't think it's working as it should. Adding more of the bass frequencies would be a good idea, in my opinion. I will also echo Wes on the drums lacking the bite they need as well. I think the arrangement is pretty good, and I really liked your opening. Needs some fix ups, but you're on a good track here. It's pretty ridiculously hard to overdub yourself, so I commend you on that. The arrangement is super cute and fun, and there's definitely a level of complexity that rally shows through in your writing and playing. I think Emu's inexperience in this type of music is what he is hearing as timing inconsistencies, as I only felt one or two areas felt a little off. I will say, though, that the clipping is killing the track. Hopefully it is something you can fix up without having to rerecord, but I'd love to see this fixed, even if it isn't a track that is meant for super-popularity. NO (resubmit, please) -

Not a well-known source tune, good to see people hitting up lesser-known stuff for sure. The vocals need some work. Right away your vocals come in a little unsupported and low for your voice, making it almost impossible to hear what you are saying for the first two syllables. Overall you could use more breath support in your vocals, which will improve your strength. Along with that, you're pitch isn't too bad, but there are some areas that need to be a little steadier. The lyrics and voice leading are another issue, overall the vocal lines don't have clear phrasing, and it feels like a long run-on sentence without a clear period or stopping point. I'd relook at your vocals lines and try to break things up more to allow yourself some time to breathe and give your lyrics more direction. The delay on the vocals is a bit gimmicky when it's used throughout the track, I'd pull most of it out and use it for parts where it will be more effective. Less is more here. The backing track has some nice areas, but there is plenty to be worked on here. The drums are repetitive, and the soundscape overall is a bit generic. I think there's more you could do with adding your own ideas to it, especially in helping out the lyrics and voice leading mentioned above. There is a lot to work on here, but you have some good ideas and from the sounds of it the drive to improve. I'd suggest our WIP forums to get some more feedback and advice. NO -
Andrew's right that there are some really interesting parts where you've added your own flare to things. I love the countermelody you put into the main part of the theme. Ultimately, though, I think there are a few issues that are holding this back. The first is the opening. It's completely dissonant, feels very unintentional, and frankly doesn't sound good. The second issue I'm hearing is that while there are some background touches, there's a lot of areas where the melody feels completely untouched, and it stands out as being a cover at times. The third issue is the soundscape, which is pretty dry as Andrew mentioned, but also pretty sparse at times. These aspects are adding up, and while I think you've got a fairly solid track, it needs that polish to get to front page. NO (resubmit)

It's been a while since I've done this, so I hope I get all of the info correct! ReMixer: Xenon Odyssey (http://ocremix.org/artist/5396/xenon-odyssey) Game: Legend of Zelda: Ocarina of Time Arrangement: Royal Treasure Individual Songs: Zelda's Lullaby/Zelda's Theme/whatever you want to call it Shoutouts: Title (LoZ), Minuet of Forest (OoT), Song of Storms (OoT) Let's see how concise I can keep this, since I can ramble for days as some people know... So back in June 2010, I was composing an original piece I ended up calling Essence, and about half way through it, I had a pretty cool chord part going on, and I was doodling around for a melody to take me into the next section. Lo and behold, I hit the magic combination of notes that equated to the famous melody known as Zelda's Lullaby in Ocarina of Time (I know that this theme was previously in A Link to the Past, but I'll get to why I'd like to classify it under Ocarina). This was about 2:56 into the piece, so at that point I thought it would be pretty lame to switch gears and turn it into an arrangement rather than an original, but I still really enjoyed the way the new chords meshed with the melody, so I made a note of it in a Sibelius file and left it to sit until I could give it the proper treatement. Fast forward a year later: I completed my bachelor's degree in music composition (and have a quality piece of toilet paper to prove it) and I have an awesome new rig courtesy of Brad Burr (aka prophetik). So armed with my dated samples from Komplete 5 and EastWest Gold, I began to carve away at creating what would become the mix you hear today. Originally, I was going to be super lame and go from 8-bit to SNES quality to a 'modern' take on the theme (I believe there's a PM I sent to halc looooooooooong ago with a horrible rendition I did in Reason for the 8-bit [he never responded so I took that as a sign to not continue with it ]), but I dropped that idea as I had a piece on my senior recital like that that featured NO TRANSITIONS at all and that clearly doesn't fly for OCR standards (plus can be pretty lame in and of itself, depending on context). The idea I had that sparked the whole remix can be heard at 4:15. Believe it or not, everything before that was written up to it, which unfortunately took me a pretty long time (4 months to be concise), which I think can be boiled down to me having no plan as to how I wanted to arrive to the idea. If I had sat down and created some sort of outline to the whole piece, I don't think the orchestration and whatnot would have taken me so long, but who doesn't love hindsight? More lessons for the future that we can conveinently forget about when we need them! Also, because my system is 64-bit, when I loaded my EastWest samples I got a bunch of pops and clicks that I ignored to the best of my ability while composing (my WiPs are plagued with them), and there have been known issues (at least with the 64-bit module of PLAY) with EastWest and FL Studio. However, after some recent searching (back in January there wasn't much in terms of solutions), I found a setting that needed to be turned off, and HOORAY the pops and clicks disappeared! So that could also be part of the reason this took so long, but it's here now! So now, we have the name: Royal Treasure. Now, what does this exactly refer to? According to the wiki page (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/The_Legend_of_Zelda:_Ocarina_of_Time_%28original_soundtrack%29), there are two versions of the soundtrack, the Original Sound Track and the SoundTrack CD (the Japanese and American, respectively). I own the SoundTrack CD that I acquired through Nintendo Power back in the day, and on that version, track 14 is called 'Ocarina of Time,' which is the track that plays when you meet Zelda after sneaking through the courtyard. However, on the Original Sound Track version, this track is 26 and titled 'Zelda's Theme' (which corresponds with A Link to the Past), and they are exactly the same, save for the name. So why would they change the title if it was already set that this was Zelda's theme and motif throughout Ocarina of Time? Obviously the editing of Nintendo of America come into play, but they could have easily named it 'Zelda's Theme' and that would have been it. So that is the reasoning behind my title of 'Royal Treasure': is it referring the game's namesake, the ocarina, or is it referring to the Princess herself? Hey look! A wall of text! How predictable...anyway, here is my 154kbps mp3, since any higher bitrates send the mix over the eight megabyte threshold, and that's just no good. After watching numerous tutorials, I finally found some great bass sounds and applied them to a medley concept I'd been mulling over. The original concept was rather foggy. The music box intro arranged from the G/S/C Team Rocket Hideout theme and a bass drop leading into some form of the R/G/B/Y Team Rocket Hideout theme were all I had to start with. After that, it boiled down to experimentation. It occurred to me during production that dubstep may well be the only genre that the Unown radio tune from G/S/C could be adapted to without losing the original's creepy flavour, so I had to mix it in. I ended up adding the Team Aqua/Magma battle theme on a whim, when I felt the song needed a break from the snarling bass. Alright, for this edition I have a solo piano medley piece remixing seven different themes from Pokemon Mystery Dungeon. It was actually made for a medley contest on a small remixer's/musician's forum (Pokemon Zone Forums, if anybody cares). Anyway, this was originally supposed to be a remix just for "Mt. Blaze." But as I progressed into the creation of the track I ran out of ideas for it. . . and so I brought in a new source. And then eventually another. And another. Until I had seven total. (It wasn't until I was about halfway done with the song that I found out about the medley contest.) The creation of this was very heavily inspired by McVaffe's "Cutman Sonata," and also Willrock's Sonic 2 Ending remix, "Above the Sky."
