  1. This is a badass arrangement with mixing that's really not doing it any favors. I second the feeling that the drums are mixed too forward, and the lead guitars are getting absolutely lost in the sauce. Basically agree with Joe on the play-by-play, I'd love to hear a tightened up version with mixing that blends each of the elements more naturally and lets the lead shine more. NO (resubmit)
  2. I'm also finding myself on the side of really wanting to like this one; the concept is so unique and quirky. Ultimately though, I find that too many of the timbres are just underdeveloped and uninteresting, in terms of both lead synths and drum tone. Most everything sounds very raw and unaffected, giving this an "unfinished demo" quality more than a "simple sounds used in a quirky way" one. Other judges have elaborated on what can be done to fix this, but I'm unfortunately not sold here. NO (resubmit)
  3. This is good, goofy fun - no complaints conceptually. The execution is serviceable - while the mixing is definitely compressed and loud, I'm not hearing any audible clipping and it looks to be mastered to -0.0dB with standard metering, and all of the instruments are at least audible and there doesn't seem to be any major imbalance between parts. YES
  4. Don't really have time to elaborate on this, but in the interest of expeditiousness, I'm cosigning with MindWanderer's vote in full here. YES
  5. This sounds sonically (pun intended) similar to the source material in terms of writing and sound design, but the reharmonizations and additional melodic licks give it enough spice to slide over the bar for me! Fun, groovy stuff, and the production is serviceable. Definitely not too conservative in my book. I'm good signing off on this! YES

Also, listening to Mercenary by F.O.O.L., I realized that Darksynth is basically psytrance just slowed down from 140-150bpm to 100-105bpm. I wanted to have fun with this! I took the darksynth style and sped it up for fun Added a few psy squelches, something I haven't ever used before, so it was exciting to learn how to make those I tried some of the textures I've been wanting to add to the long break I wanted to use some new (to me) filters on Audiomint's voice which I used when she sings in the slow break For the second tempo change, I speed it up from 143 to 206, and then drop to half speed. This was to give the illusion of "going uphill both ways" - instead of slowing it back down to 103. For Hemophiliac - I added that 5/4 skip after me saying "heh". Name of individual song(s) arranged: Hikari no Willpower / Theme of Trunks Additional information about game including composer, system, etc. (if it has not yet been added to the site): A rather mediocre Dragon Ball Z fighting game released for the PSX in the late 90s. The composer is supposed to be Kenji Yamamoto, like most of these classic DBZ games and part of the anime soundtrack (yeah, that guy who infamously known for massive plagiarism). This specific source is also commonly known as an anime song that later featured actual lyrics sung by the mythical singer Hironobu Kageyama, but the first appearance of that song was as VGM in that PSX game. WAV DOWNLOAD LINK of this remix (MP3 192k file attached to this message too): Link to the original soundtrack (if it is not one of the sound archives already available on the site) Since the original soundtrack is real audio there's no emulation files to link to, but here's someone in Youtube who uploaded all the tracks here: https://www.youtube.com/playlist?list=PL5BB83550E16A796D Your own comments about the mix, for example the inspiration behind it, how it was made, how the source material was referenced in the arrangement, etc: Hello! I know OCR for a VERY long time, it was one of the first sites I discovered dedicated to VGM covers/remixes sometime in the late 2000s when I was a kid. It wasn't until early 2021 that I decided to start becoming active in the scene, though, as I felt like I never had anything to offer anyways. And now this is my first submission to OCR, which also happens to be kinda fresh since this game is not even in the site's database yet. The first version of this was originally submitted to Dwelling of Duels (a monthly videogame music competition) for Licensed Month and it placed 13/26. A slightly improved mix was later part of "Metal Dragons", a small album / EP dedicated to more of these old Dragon Ball Z fighting games. I (Unknown Pseudoartist) did all the arranging work, programming, mix, etc but I had the pleasure to count with a team of talented musicians to play their instruments, like: Angry Polar Bear - Lead keys (sawtooth, organ and strings) Ian Martyn - Woodwinds (low whistle and irish whistle) Jett Swole - All guitars (electric and acoustic) and bass Jinx - Pianos I had some ideas for a hypothetical arrangement for a long time so that Licensed Month in Dwelling of Duels was the perfect excuse to try it serious. That piano intro in the original always gave me the feels as soon as I'd hear it while playing the game as a kid, and that's something I wanted to keep in my cover but strengthing the feels even further by extending that part and adding woodwinds, backing chorus and more stuff. Instead of going straight to the upbeat part I built the way to metal in a more progressive way, with a more orchestral bridge in between. This was originally the theme of Trunks in the game, and as such I had the story of this character in mind, with each part of the arrangement linked to specific events and things happening. That can seen more clearly in this AMV I did for Youtube: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=iL0rp-_7CK4 The title, "HOPE!!" is taken from what was written in the time capsule Trunks used to travel to the past with the HOPE to get the key to defeat the Red Ribbon androids that are ruining the future in Earth. Since this is about a character who travels in time, I just had the goofy idea of adding a reference to the main theme of the iconic movie, Back to the Future in the middle, to make it even more epic. I hope this don't cause any trouble to the judges regarding the prevalence of original content from the source! As it's not that long of a part anyways. The peaceful, acoustic outro with background ambient sounds is meant to symbolize the bittersweet ending that story has: the bad guys are defeated but all what was lost, was lost forever and no dragon balls can save them, but all what remains is to look forward and start a new life with HOPE to a better future (well... until another villain in the continuation, Dragon Ball Super, ruins it again, but that's a totally different story!).

Link to pvz1 soundtrack: https://laurashigihara.bandcamp.com/album/plants-vs-zombies-soundtrack Link to pvz2 soundtrack: Comments: The intro was inspired by an intro to an indoor percussion show, though I can't actually remember the name of it. I realized, after writing up to the main Grasswalk motif (1:00-1:11), that this arrangement would work even better if I made it a medley of sorts and tossed in a few extra themes. Ultimately, those would be Demonstration mini-game, Loonboon, and Ancient Egypt's Final Wave, in that order. I also really liked the swing in Peamix's Holiday Mashup themes, which happened to include some Grasswalk references, so that's the inspiration behind the swing section. Also Loonboon just sounds like it should have swing, even if it technically doesn't. But yeah, that's pretty much it. I hope you guys will enjoy it!

Since one of the only EDM-styles applicable in this case was Big Room (which switches the main melody for the breaks) we decided to make a Big Room-esque track where the main melody is in all the slow parts and the so called drop consists of variations of the intro melody heard in the original. It is quite the departure from the original but that is a key part of a track from Pixel Pirates.
  11. Original Decision Artist: SweetNES Hi there, OCRemix. Below is my resubmission for yet another ChronoTrigger Remix which, by my math, should now be suitable for your criteria for a high enough percentage of original source material. Looking forward to your feedback. Thanks as always for what you do for the VGM community!
  12. Hey! So we most likely missed Mario/DK Priority month but either way we are super (no pun intended) happy with how this arrangement turned out. A bit of Backstory. The original ORIGINAL version of this was a dwelling of duels submission that actually had lyrics and had a much different arrangement. After a while I went back to it and totally revamped the arrangement and got rid of the lyrics. I of course mad a ridiculous puppet music video of it seen here: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=WVd3IFH7PEY I’ve been meaning to submit this one for a while, and when Mario/DK priority came up I decided to take the opportunity to re re do it with real instruments. Huge thanks to Lucas Guimaraes for gathering everyone involved and also thanks to everyone involved…that was redundant but still. Alas I’m probably too late for the priority but in any event here is my Bavarian polka arrangement of Crocodile Cacophony entitled: Crocodile Kroctoberfest (Prost Mix) Game: Donkey Kong Country 2, Super Smash Bros Ultimate Name of Arrangement: Crocodile Kroctoberfest (Prost Mix) Name of Song: Crocodile Cacophony (The Smash Ultimate Version) Original Composer: David Wise Source: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=J2skbG1WHXw Artists: General Grunt - arrangement/composition Muffin Tunes - clarinets, bass clarinet Valse39 - clarinets Ian Martyn - accordion Shea's Violin - violins optimizasean - violins Nemo Fairlight - viola Lucas Guimaraes - orchestra, percussion Ridley Snipes - electric bass, drums, percussion, mix/master Attached in the email is the 320k Mp3 but I've also included a google drive link with other formats. I saw that there weren't any Chuck Rock remixes on OCR and thought this might be a fresh track here. The main inspiration came for this when I was mindlessly playing La Grange on my guitar around the time I first heard this OST and something clicked. Thanks! Mike "evilsonic"

Go Straight For this mix, I took a more conservative approach, because all the elements of the original are very "90s". Hence, I kept the 90s feel, yet didn't go for a total FM sound like my other SOR2 remix because I think that, honestly, Yuzo did it the best on this one and I can't surpass him. Instead, I went for 90s house feel using 90s production techniques, arrangements and sounds. I even used the legendary JD-990 synthesizer (produced at the time) and samples from the TR 909 to give extra authenticity and 90s feel. All the bass sounds are from Chip MD, a Sega FM emulator. All in all, it's a re-imagining of what the song would have been using state of the art production techniques at the time, and a quite conservative homage on this classic v-game track. I hope the fans enjoy!

  16. Hey ocremix team! I'm submitting another one of my arrangements! ReMixer name: Mental Real Name: Ly email address: my social media: https://lymusicger.bandcamp.com https://soundcloud.com/lymusicger userid: 17600 Name of game: Donkey Kong Country 2 Name of original soundtrack: Mining Melancholy Name of my arrangement: Prismatic Some important remarks to the track: I used the metal tops from the source material. I made sure it's subtle and is audible at the start and during the second part of the main theme around 2:38. I hope it doesn't clash with copyright issues. The spoken vocals originate from commercially available sample packs. To the music itself: Mining Melancholy already had a retro vibe to begin with, so synthwave felt appropriate for me. Personally, the signature sound of the original track has always been the insane percussion and the heavy synths, so I preserved the top metals and kept the whole piece synthy. To give it a bit of the organic feeling I added some vocals, little arpeggio effects and an electric guitar to fill in between the melody. It's a very simplistic remix, but I hope it's still enjoyable. Best regards! Ly
  17. Hi. Here’s a new remix I did recently. It’s from one of my all time favourites games »Marble Madness«. Back in 1986 I first played it in an arcade game park in france during a holiday with my family. The arcade-version was pretty hard though, so I got no further than the third level. With the amiga-version I could play it to the end. There are only six levels but it’s a lot of fun. Sadly the successor »Marble Madness 2« was never released. :o( I started the remix with a stomping beat and the widely known »Beginner Race«-theme. But after some time I integrated the »Practice Race«-music and it evolved to a kind of chorus. And the positive vibes of this theme took the helm and made the whole remix really energetic. I've always wanted to do my own take on Trisection. I got a bit out of my comfort zone and arranged a sax quartet. I was very lucky to have pulled this off in the little time we had towards the end of the deadline (about 50% of the month was spent on arranging). My amazing collaborators and I pulled it off. With some nice feedback, we ended up polishing it some more before an official release and OCR submission. Final Fantasy Tactics represents a game about war, friends (and other loved ones) growing apart and no longer being able to go back to your home. I purposely waited for as long as possible to go directly back to the A section at the very end because I wanted the A section to be felt with a different context. Almost no other section is a 1:1 reprise except that section. Like, the first time I do the B section, I give the melody to the Baritone Saxophone. Second time? Soprano. So yes, the notes are the same, but the context they're experienced in is different. It's like visiting your hometown 20 years after moving: Yeah, the place is still the same, but so, so much else has changed. No matter how much you want to, you will never be able to return home. It's a bit of a downer, but I hope you all enjoy it.

Contact Information Username: H36T UserID:37144 Website: https://www.youtube.com/@H36TRemasters Submission Information Arrangement Game: Final Fantasy VIII Name of Arrangement: Compression of Light and Shadow Song Being Arranged: Compression of TIme Comments: Hello there! I'm back again with another mix (and a new name!), this time from whaat I consider to be 1A or 1B to FFVII for Uematsu's greatest works OST wise. My opinion aside, I actually have never been a big fan of this song in the game. However, from a creative standpoint, I saw a lot there. While the original is pretty simple and kinda creepy and ominous, I (maybe) took some of that away and gave it an atmospheric makeover. The beginning is this spacial, airy presentation of the theme, quickly taken over by a cloud of darkness, thunder, and heavy rain. The end result is something that feels to me like a conversation betweeen composer and OCReMixer. And I think thats what its all about. Oddly enough, the first half I made a few years ago and left it as is for awhile. But I've been getting into this style where I take a track, present one thing thematically and then flip it...or blow it out the water haha. The end result is usually something more faithful while adding new layers. After exploring that I take that and transform it into something new. A yin and a yang. A light and a shadow. In my early days writing, I worried I was engaging in the act of lazy writing, but over time I've come to embrace this style. Maybe I'll try something different and more traditional next time. For now, I hope you enjoy Compression of Light and Shadow. Until next time~ (PS: I tried my hardest to get the clipping and volume under control without using a compressor on the master track but at the end of the day, I got the balance I wanted in terms of how it sounded to my ears and with -1db on the compression threshold it came back with no clipping so I called it a day hahaha....uh oh)
  20. ReMixer name: jnWake, Ivan Hakštok, Nemo Fairlight Name of game(s) arranged: The Legend of Zelda: Ocarina of Time. Name of arrangement: The Secret Lullaby. Name of individual song(s) arranged: Zelda's Theme (https://ocremix.org/song/41/zeldas-theme So, back in like 2014 I was contacted about an upcoming album that was dedicated to djp's recently born daughter. It was meant to be an album of more chill tracks and my super creative mind immediately went to Zelda's Lullaby... Anyway, where my mind actually went to a creative spot was the idea of basing this remix on one of my favorite "regular" music songs, "The Secret Song" by british prog-rock/pop band Frost* (here: https://open.spotify.com/track/1kIb02iceWgfdJdmaFWvGR?si=92e837a97a1a4651). For some reason that I can't fully recall currently, my 2014 self thought that Zelda's Lullaby fit with this particular song so I got the idea of mixing them together. Since Frost's tune has vocals I also wanted to add vocals to my arrangement. In any case, for reasons I can't recall I never really started writing the arrangement and it just stayed in my head, completely missing the chance to be in the album meant for djp's daughter. Fast-forward to 2023 and for April's Free Month on Dwelling of Duels I decided to revisit this idea. I managed to find some collabers and I finally managed to do it! I'm pretty happy with how it ended up and I'm glad I can finally share what was meant to be for djp's daughter who I assume is too old for lullabies now! Somewhat funnily, I also became a father in the meantime so I guess I can dedicate this to my own daughter, who I think shares a birthdate with djp's one! Small breakdown now: 0:00-0:08: Intro percussion, heavily inspired by Frost's song. The electronic toms are actually playing Goron's Lullaby from Majora's Mask but it's so subtle that I didn't even list it as a source. 0:09-0:28: Zelda Lullaby's melody on piano. The timing is slightly different from the original but I think the emphasis on the A works pretty well. 0:29-1:08: First verse, the vocals sing Zelda Lullaby's main melody, the chords are heavily based on Frost's song first verse. 1:09-1:38: Chorus! This is the B section from Zelda Lullaby with very few alterations outside of the rhytm. 1:39-2:17: Zelda Lullaby main melody now on guitar! The rhytm change is taken from Frost's song but while they stay with electronic drums I shifted to real (well, sampled) ones. 2:18-2:56: Second chorus! The similarities with Frost's song end here as I move to a more standard Wake-ish arrangement. 2:56-3:55: Variations over the main Zelda Lullaby theme on guitar and keys. 3:56-end: Return to the electronic percussion and ending! Hope you like it! I'm curious if the resemblance to a "real" song is a problem but I hope it isn't haha. Source: Reference Track from Frost*:

Contact Information Cyril the Wolf Connor Pelkey https://cyrilthewolf.com 14582 Submission Information Chrono Cross Scar's Worn by Time CHRONO CROSS ~Scars Left By Time~ I've been wanting to do a version of this tune for awhile now, but there's so many takes on this song I just couldn't figure it out. Eventually though I was trying to figure out what songs I wanted to perform for a set at MAGFest when I realized you could do an acoustic arrangement fairly convincingly and cover *most* of the parts. I did perform it live in that manner since it was just me and a guitar at MAGFest, but I wanted to get BOMBASTIC to really measure up to the original for the recording. I elected to fore-go extra strings and things and keep it pretty simple so the parts that were there could shine. This was also submitted to the Dwelling of Duels contest for January/December as well and I'm proud of how well everything clicked. Lyrics: The memories are flowing fast They're too fine for me Sands of time wearing away what walls that I had built So I let you in But Time was never meant for us It merely wanted our tears as we bear its scars... We pay the price of those who came before We pray that we won't be the same Devoured by the ones who sealed our fate Our world is just a frozen flame When all of the dew dries Ending the morning Do we condemn nature because nothing ever lasts? Cerulean our skies No sign of a warning We sighed at the future and just lived in our past When all of our dreams die Who is in mourning? We cry for the future but can't forgive our past
