  1. Good work here from Brandon. Clear source connections and nice arrangement. Not a ton to add to what's already been said, but I will say I felt like the strings seem to get marginalized a bit too much by the heavy guitar work, so I'd like to hear them come out a bit further or the guitars toned back just a bit. Yep, dark, sometimes brooding. Hearing the source, I can def tell why you took it in this direction. YES
  2. Some great points brought up here already, so gonna keep this short. Strong overall piece. Guitars are nice. Lead could be better as mentioned. Mike does make a good point on the drums. I don't view it as much of a writing issue (because the writing was good), but more of detail issue on humanizing velocities and, if possible, sample rotation. Still, it didn't strike me as big of an issue and not a dealbreaker. Something to work on for next time. YES
  3. Lol, I feel like the same things bother both myself and Kristina. The string drop at :13, huh? Cool, creative approach to the theme here. Good sequencing work on elements like the piano. The string stabs got slightly rigid at times, but overall well done. Drums could use a bit more variation. Right as I was typing this, I did start to hear a bit of cymbal work and some fills using toms. Try to remember when writing a "performed" drum part for a song to interrupt the beat when writing fill patterns to avoid growing a 3rd arm for your drummer (2:30) I hear Michael's crits on the frequency issues, but it didn't strike me as a deal-breaker. Perhaps something to consider for your future work? YES
  4. Definitely feeling a lot of Kristina's crits here. The beat (while very cool/solid) lacked variation. The trumpety lead thing at 1:24 felt like an odd choice when contrasted with more hi-fi elements in the background and beat. It didn't hang around very long. Overall, though, it was nicely & tastefully produced. I'm with Larry that the arrangement work felt borderline conservative to me. There are subtle additions and expansions. Variations in the melody like 3:08 were a welcome change. I know I tend to harp on this a lot, but weak endings really bother me . Here, the track just abruptly stops without any sort of wrap up or resolution. This doesn't really affect my vote much, but as mixer myself I feel like I need to get the word out that there's no reason to be lazy with the ending of your track. This is the final impression you're leaving with your listener - do something with it! I admit I don't always have the best endings with my personal tracks, but I try to never leave it in a state like this. OK, sorry, /rant! I feel like I'm more on the fence than the YES's, but still in passing range. YES (borderline)
  5. I can see both sides here. Sweet, sweet arrangement. Cool production ideas, sweet change-ups (loved the "secret found" cameo, Flex and I did something like that recently). Really digging your style man. But yeah, the crowded sections are really killing it for me. :44 was pushing it a little bit, but passable. Once the beats kick in at :59, it's just too much. It's back and forth for the rest of the song, depending on how dense the writing is in a particular section. I could see this passing as-is and it honestly wouldn't bother me if it did. Still, I think this track deserves a little clean up TLC to really shine. NO resubmit, please (borderline)
  6. So good. Lots of energy here and an effective fusion of chippy leads with heavy beats and bass work. The beat really drives the song along - very meaty with a good amount of punch. Nice bass work as well I can hear what Kristina is saying on the freq's meshing and loudness and, while I didn't feel it was a dealbreaker here, it definitely is an issue. The mix is pretty top heavy with the cutting synths, and a good amount of high end presence in both the beat and the bass. Very cool arrangement. No gripes there. Ending was underwhelming TBH for such an epic track. Some stuff that could be fixed up, but I love it. YES PS this sounds like the delay/reverb tail gets cut off at the end. May want to ask for a fixed up version?
  7. Have to say, I'm not really feeling some of the synth work here. Main detuned woodwindy-sounding lead really sticks out since it's pretty dry and doesn't have much character. The bass synth sounds a bit on the basic side as well, but I think it can work. Definitely feeling Larry on the drum crits, so no need to rehash that. Things do start sounding nicer with the reverbed sitars almost acting as pads behind things. No real ending to speak of here. Maybe the mixer ran out of ideas? No reason to be lazy, though, give your track a proper ending. Something that resolves things a bit more nicely Good arrangement ideas, but needs the production lovin NO resubmit, please
  8. Apologies for the double post, but we're just getting ready to get underway for the listening party. Feel free to drop by!
  9. Thanks for the kind comments, guys! I admit, I was a bit leery of having this posted after so many years after completing it. I'm glad it's been received so well, despite its age Great analysis here. I basically write what I hear in my head (not really much of a theory guy, unfortunately) so I can hit problems like what you've mentioned here. As far as updates, I was tempted to completely rework this once I upgraded to better samples, but I couldn't bring myself to do it. It was my first accepted mix and I'm still proud of that fact. I did have this sent to back to me for a small issue with one of the instruments and I did take the opportunity at that point to remaster the track. However, no changes to writing or instrumentation was made.
  10. Hey everyone, we're planning on having a listening party on IRC tonight at 6PM PST at #sm64album. Make sure you have the album downloaded ahead of time in case we're not able to get a stream set up. Hope you can make it!
  11. Well, crap But yeah, this song is one of my personal favorites from the album. Sooo glad he was recommended
  12. To be honest, I'm still in a bit of shock that this has finally released after so long. It's a massive relief and a proud moment for myself and everyone else that worked so hard on it. We're planning to have a listening part tomorrow evening, so stay tuned to this thread! EDIT: Hey everyone, we're planning on having a listening party on IRC tonight at 6PM PST at #sm64album. Hope you can make it!
  13. Preview it: http://www.youtube.com/embed/tsjVzhJNdAQ Download it: http://plumber.ocremix.org Torrent: http://bt.ocremix.org/torrents/Super_Mario_64_-_Portrait_of_a_Plumber.torrent Super Mario 64 is an iconic game in many ways. It first introduced us to a three-dimensional Mario. It featured revolutionary controls and gameplay for its time. To this day, it is still a popular title for classic game enthusiasts and speed runners. What's not always recognized or remembered by the broader public is the masterpiece that is Koji Kondo's soundtrack. Though relatively short by today's standards, each theme evokes the feeling and experience of the stage that they are set in. From the upbeat Bob-omb Battlefield music to the calming melodies of "Dire, Dire Docks," even the casual player is likely to recognize these catchy tunes. I'm incredibly proud to have the opportunity to direct this effort. This album has been a long time coming as we experienced ebbs and flows in progress and times where we questioned whether it would ever come to completion at all. Though I joined soon after the project's inception as a remixer, I eventually would become the 4th director to take on the project. I'd like to take the time to recognize the previous directors who, without their hard work laying the foundation, this project never would've come to fruition: First, POCKETMAN, who was the project founder and original director. Also, thanks to Fishy & assistant director Sole Signal, who took over after POCKETMAN's departure. Musically, this album showcases OverClocked ReMix's reputation as a community proficient in a diverse set of genres. Portrait of a Plumber features rock, electronic, orchestral, and more. There's really something here for everyone. I sincerely hope that this will serve to highlight both Kondo's fantastic work as well as the work of the many many talented artists who came together to make this possible. - Justin Medford (Nutritious)
  14. Yeah, I'll post updates here and in the first post when things are finalized.
  15. Gonna try to get my hat in the ring soon for this one
  16. For those not having the full context, this project actually started over SEVEN years ago. This thread only represents the point that I took over as project director. I do wish it had taken less time after that for me to usher it out the door, though. The music was finished in 2013, but the project was lacking some much needed album art and the contest took some time to coordinate and complete. I had only minimal involvement with the contest, so huge props to Dave and the gang for pushing it through - the fantastic results really showed made it worth the wait. It's not.... unless it is. ================================ Also, I'm talking to Silver Sonic about having the listening party hosted on Radio Nintendo, but it's still up in the air at this point. As we get a firm release date, I'll update here with the details on what we're gonna do.
  17. I was a tad worried when I heard the sample from the original in the intro, but you kept it short so we good. The rhythm guitars underneath really bring the energy to this track. One could argue this is a conservative take on the original melody lines and sound choices, but there is a lot of care given in the writing details and dynamic contrasts, which sets this apart. Things continue to branch out after the halfway mark, which I like. The pseudo fakeout fade ending at 3:35-3:58 was a nice touch. This is good stuff. Great mix. YES
  18. In light of Larry's vote above, I've gone back to this and been A/bing it for the last 15 minutes or so. I do (somewhat) remember my vote process on this one and listening to the high score/arrangement melodies together and noting the similar 'feel' and 'sound' between them. That said, while I don't think this is necessarily as obvious as implied above, I totally see where he's coming from and agree with his analysis. Buck stops with me as I did note the arrangement work specifically in my vote. I'm gonna have to be much more careful in the future to analyze deeper than 'sounds like' OST.
  19. No thats outdated. I'll update the first post.
  20. Great news guys: release is fast approaching! If anyone's interested, I'm planning on holding a listening party on IRC on the release date. I'll post back here with details as it gets finalized, so keep an eye out.

  22. Liking the subdued opening. Palp's made some excellent points above. The bell synth lead isn't holding down the lead pattern well because it's too washed out in reverb/decay, making the faster sections' notes bleed into each other. I think a more aggressive synth tone would work better, but that's just IMO. With the energy and excellent guitar work here, it really does deserve better percussion treatment. You've earned it! . Initially, I thought it was just a repetitive sequencing issue, but when the drums are playing in the quieter sections, it exposes the snare sample weakness more. Piano felt a bit rigid as well around the 4:15ish mark. Ending was very cool. Tons of energy and potential here. Keep at it. NO resubmit, please
  23. I haven't heard the old version, but I do hear what Kristina is saying about the thin guitars. In general, the soundscape is a bit harsh in some of the high-mid frequencies. This is certainly different. Almost like rock music meets a broken music box. Some of the bells are resonating a bit loud in my earphones, which can cause fatigue after a while and actually made me turn the track down. Nice arrangement work, which balances out some of my production crits. This is quite unique and sort of odd, but it works. EDIT: vote switch, see below NO
