  1. Thanks for the feedback, guys. Leah, I think the distortion is actually on the track - not the stream. I've noticed it myself when working on the mix, but wasn't sure how to clean it up. It sounds like it could be the bass line getting muddled with the trumpets and/or strings. I'm guessing I have some mastering work to do then. I've posted the OST here so you can compare the difference if you'd like. As for the kick, I'm not sure I understand what you're saying. I've got a kick in there whenever the drum track is playing.
  2. Updated version up at same link: -Shortened intro down so the drum section comes in sooner -Fixed a few chords in the trumpets -A few minor sounds/effects added -Changed ending a little -Messed up the hihats on one of the drum sections slightly, will fix later
  3. If you're limited on samples, you can still work with what you have to make something unique. For example, layering 2 or 3 snare sounds or adding a compressor, filter or other effect to change the sound. Sometimes adding a slight reverb to dry samples like the snare can also bring a little life to them.
  4. I'd recommend using a filter to get rid of the high frequencies on some of the background synths (especially the one with the phaser effect). This should cut back on the 'white noise' that's present.
  5. Ok, so I was backing up my sound files a couple weeks ago and most of the stuff related to this song mysteriously disappeared. Therefore, I'm starting over . New Track Death Wind OST Win Theme OST I decided to take a new angle at the intro, incorporating the Death Wind track as a buildup - rather than generic chords. I think it fits the fzero style a lot better. I've just started working on the Win Theme part of the song, so it isn't very developed yet. I'm considering changing the orch hits to follow the pattern of the Title Screen OST, which may be a nice allusion.
  6. I agree on the Jedi Knight Series Dark Forces < Jedi Knight < Jedi Outcase (JK2) - which had great online competitive play. Then Jedi Academy came out which was basically a graphics upgrade (with a few new moves) to JK2 and should've been an add-on IMO. It even had some of the same bugs in the gameplay from it's predicessor. I don't consider it an improvement. Haven't heard if they'll ever make a new game in the Jedi Knight series either...
  7. Awesome game, highly recommended! I'm currently pulling out the audio and fading it for my own listening. Great job on the soundtrack Gecko, BAC & Groove.
  8. That's why it's here in WIP . Interestingly, though, that section is where I've deviated the most from the source so far. I can agree, though, that there's not enough going on in the other sections to make them very interesting, so I'll continue to work on them. Since most here aren't familiar with the source tune, I've updated the original post with links to it. Meanwhile, I'll be working on the next update.
  9. Updated: Version 3 (see original post for link) I_Love_OC_Remixes: I hate it when I hear sirens in songs because I'm usually listening in my car and it makes me think police are around or something. I appreciate the idea though .
  10. This sounds somewhat like a minimal mix you have going here - I'm not sure whether or not that's on purpose, but I think you need to fill up the soundscape a lot more. I think the lower end especially could use some help. The kick instrument you're using is very dry. This is my personal opinion, but I'd like to see it be a little less prominent in the mix, but have a fatter sound - probably on the lower end also. The lead synths in the first section are very subdued. You should bring these out more so the melody of the song is prominent. Judging by the eq, it sounds like your kick is peaking near 0, but the rest of the sounds aren't even close. Try bringing the kick down, maybe compressing it (more) and brining out the other sounds. A lot of this sounds very close to the original song. I'd recommend working on brining out more originality in your work. The high-end sounds around 3:02 started to hurt my ears, especially after the first 3 minutes of the song being relatively quiet. Consider working on the mastering of this track to prevent any ear-piercing noises. Also, I think I heard some clipping in that same section, so try to keep under the 0db mark. You've got a good start here, but I think you still have work to do. Try to get more variation in the piece going with dynamics and instruments to keep the listener interested.
  11. Part 1: 00:27-00:32 sounds like flammie entrance from Secret of Mana That's the only thing I can add to the one's already identified
  12. OK, so here's some constructive criticism: Midi is not a good format for posting remixes. It's going to sound different to users depending on their system. The best use of midi is to import it to your computer and then assign synths and effects to it. If you want to use your keyboard for the synths and sounds it can make, you need to use audio imputs instead of midi. So for the song itself, a lot of the timing is off for the underlying sound as well as the lead. It's especially noticable when you change sections from one part of the song to another. I'd recommend practicing parts you plan on playing live so you can smoothly transition. Also, a metronome would probably be a worthwhile investment if your synth doesn't have one built in. As far as this qualifying as a remix, you only have a single sound playing for the entire song. You need to first decide what type of style or genre you're aiming for. Then, flesh out the song with different instruments, effects and so on.
  13. I'm pretty new to music editing, but used to encounter similiar issues when I used to do video editing. Now, this depends on the type of sound you're using and the extent of the timing issues, but you may want to try "pre-rendering" (video term, I don't know what you'd call it here) the track(s) you're having problems with. Basically, get the track how you want it to sound, put it on solo play and render it to a .wav file. Then, import the wav file back into your project and manually fix the timing to the rest of the song. Again, this really depends on what kind of sound you're using and how easily you could edit/move the sound without ruining it . Hope this helps.
  14. IJP, midi is not the format you'd want to be sending your songs to others. I'm definitely no expert, but it's more akin to sending their computer the sheet music for your song rather than the actual finished piece. I think it would be helpful to visit the remixing forum for some tutorials and other helpful links to learn some of the basics around remixing: http://www.ocremix.org/phpBB2/viewforum.php?f=7 For a much better explanation than mine of what MIDI is, see the bottom post on http://www.ocremix.org/phpBB2/viewtopic.php?t=95471&postdays=0&postorder=asc&start=15
  15. What format is your song currently in? There are a lot of programs out there that will convert formats for you, many of them for free. Also, you might want to try having www.soundclick.com host it for you. You can set up a free account and add songs to your "band" there. At least that way you could link to it from here so others can critique it.
  16. OK, sorry for the long delay in updating, due to computer issues my project file was completely wiped out. Anyway, I started over from scratch and have made several updates to the tune. You can reach the beta2 version from the same link in the original post. I appreciate the criticism above. I've messed with the levels on the bass and drums to bring them out more. Also, I've started working on tweaking/eliminating the repetative parts of the song. Don't judge this as a near-finished product though. I admit there is quite a ways to go on it .
  17. Hey, this is my first WIP for OCR, so I was hoping to get some ideas/constructive criticism: http://www.soundclick.com/bands/pagemusic.cfm?bandID=621908 This is a remix of the first stage music of SOR2. *Update* Version 3 now up on same link as above. Midi of the original can be found at: http://www.vgmusic.com/music/console/sega/genesis/SoRII1st.mid If you want something closer to the original, you can get the OST from OCR (you can play it in winamp with the plugins from www.chipamp.org): http://www.ocremix.org/songs/original/Streets_of_Rage_2.zip
  18. This remix nagged at me when I was listening to it. It seemed to have pretty good production and use of panning, but I thought there are some glaring issues that hurt this song. My main beef is with the underlying synth sound being in a different key than the main melody line. This seemed to be true with the bass synth as well (can't remember exactly how these went as I'm not hearing the song at the moment). It makes me think the synths (and possibly the repeating flanged drum loop) are just generic samples. I wanted to like this song since I thought the lead synth is excellent, but I think the off-key parts ruined it for me.
  19. Wow, this song brings back memories. As said before, he manages to capture the quirky feel of the OST throughout the medley. Well done.
  20. Excellent, solid Industrial. I wasn't sure I'd like this song when it first started, but as soon as that synth bass came in at :19 I was reassured. Also, contrary to Revolver's description, I don't find the guitar repetitive since it really fills in the low-end of the mix. Great work.
  21. I'm with Mustin on this one, can't wait to hear the finished product. This is actually the first WIP I've downloaded and I think you've ruined me for life for any other WIP I might check out.
  22. This song reminds me of a Boards of Canada song (I THINK Telephasic Workshop) with the voices. I liked certain parts of the song, but some of the effects and voice samples prevented it from being a keeper for me.
  23. This is another one of my favorites songs on OCR. The original in the water stages of the game really set the atmosphere and remains one of my favorite (need to stop using that word) OSTs of any game. I really like how he takes his time in building up the theme on this song. If you remember Dire, Dire Docks in the game, the song would only flesh out once you reached certain areas of the stage. I think The Wingless has done an excellent job of keeping that same slow-building feel. The piano is well integrated with the rest of song - it seems to just barely rise above the rest of the soundscape until about 2:13 when it takes a more dominant role in the song. Minimal drums also keep the same feel as the original. Great work.
  24. Ok, so I'm one of those people that has been coming to this site for years (since around 2002) and never posted. Time to break that trend . This is one of my favorite songs on OCR. I've always loved the source tune from the game, but this takes it to new levels. I guess I can see why many feel it's repetative, but I honestly think there's enough change-ups to keep it interesting. Plus, it's added a ton of energy to the original tune, which was already solid. Excellent work.
