  1. there's a number of interesting sounds here, some fm synthesis, some oscillator sync, some distorted bandpass sweeps, detuned saws. he's got a bit of everything.

there's something rhythmically odd about the beat at 1:05ish, like the beat is swinged while everything else is straight. in the 1:30 section and on it's not very interesting... there's just that piercing melody and bassline pattern while the drums carry the listener's attention to the next measure.

pretty cluttered overall... i think this needs another resubmit.

  2. uhh.. wasn't sure what to make of this when i heard it. there are parts in this track that are very cheap sounding and other parts that are quite full. sound effects are difficult to work into a mix effectively and this is not an example of how to do it right.

oh well, this mix does have a lot to offer the listener. perhaps in some gestalt manner the whole is greater than the sum of the parts?

    and man are you oogley.

    yes

  3. this is supposed to be like BT? i don't think so. more like Falco...

nice bass. the power tools are cool, good to hear something different.

the arrangement is pretty simplistic and basic. doesn't really develop as much as one would hope. we just sort of hear the same melody again and again with limited variation. what could have redeemed this for me is an elaborate ending.

  4. very mechanical piano sequencing. people know what a piano sounds like when played by a human... and it doesn't sound like this. this sounds like inputing notes via mouse.

the abrupt break at 2:40 is unpleasing.

this tune is very happy though.. could be a good remix if executed well. better luck next time andy.

  5. it's not really too bad. but i agree it could use a resubmit for reasons outlined above.

and where's the bass? is it non-existent or is it just buried?

i can so hear a stereo delay on that lead... among other things. with a little embellishment this will be fine for ocr. resubmit!

  6. bah. sectionz's website requires a session id cookie to download, their database returns errors without it. oh well, i added the site to my exceptions list.

i agree that black omen makes rather unique mixes. he is good with piano. he has talent. but it will be some time before he can execute his artistic vision effectively. this track is a contrast between clutter and sparseness that just doesn't work in a coherent manner. everything sounds cheap and thin or loud and boomy; mixing skills need development.

  7. in addition to sounding very bad like the others have mentioned, it doesn't take many liberties from the original. it follows the structure exactly. although i haven't played the amiga version of cybernoid 2 but judging from the remix the theme is pretty much the same as the C64 version which i have played.

  8. 80kbps? mp3 artifacts do not aid in making this sound authentic..

like cotmm said, this track is very cute. it's the kind of remix i'd like to take home to my mother.

great concept, but it should still be an enjoyable musical experience. the repitition is just annoying. it's probably purposeful, but take what i said about it should be enjoyable still.

good idea, but there could be more done here. like incorporate more musical ideas from that time peroid... that would make this more fun.

  9. cool fm sounds and nice drum programming.

now if it was around 3:30 in length it could probably work, but 5 minutes is really pushing it.

i don't know the original at all, but even assuming it's a clever interpretation, this still doesn't have a lot to offer to the listener for reasons explained by vig & prot.

  10. nice reverby percussion. almost too reverby, but that's not an issue.

sometimes the attacks on the strings are too slow for the melodic rhythm, so you get an unnatural sounding attack, but that was infrequent.

it sounds very empty harmonically, we just get melody/bass and maybe some fifths here and there. the voicings in this arrangement seem odd, as if the remixer is inexperienced with the orchestral style (just a guess, but i'm often wrong).

ooh, we get some clever dissonance with the oboe solo.

at the end we finally get some harmonies through linear dissolution of additional melodic lines, but it's still somewhat unsatisfying.

for orchestral, this really doesn't have a lot of substance to it. there are good ideas but i think it would benefit from a resubmit.

  11. i agree with all of the criticisms mentioned (especially vigilante's), this mix could use improvement. i am tempted to send it back for a resubmit, however i'm going to let it pass.

the reason being: i've had this song for a while and although there's not much to it, there is some replay value. i've listened to it several times in succession without any major gripes. the mix is just enough to be passable.

but dj orange better try harder next time.

    yes

  12. jazz jackrabbit! such a cool game, i love old pc games. and the original of this song was pretty cool too.

however... this seems as though he took the original MOD file, sped it up and added stuff (like better drums and a nifty intro). the samples sound identical to the original.

i'm gonna try to rip the MODs from the game and verify, but so far i'm convinced enough that this is more of a rip than a remix.

  13. sounds pretty good. can anyone point me the original? i've never played halo...

Heya!! I recently submitted a few of my renditions to the Game HALO and Counter STrike Montage but I was unable to get in touch with DJPretzel about the matter, and I wanted to know if you were able to help me out, or perhaps get the tracks in front of a few judges.

    My handle is "edgen"

    email is justin@edgen.com

    website is: www.edgen.com

first submission was sent on 6.20.03

  14. has a nice feel to it, but i'm pretty much in agreement with wingless. it's too similar to the original. either make it less like the original or develop the improv sections further, make it sound like something a real piano player would play. i know i would be very bored playing those simplistic solos. embellish!

in conclusion, i see room for improvement here.

  15. there's a synth patch in this that sounds like the 'horns of jericoh' preset on my waldorf microq. sure that information is useless, but it's a segue to me saying that i think that's a great sound. unfortunately i can't speak highly of anything else, the kick is pretty cool but yikes it is loud.

the lofi vox samples are sorta annoying. overall there's just not a lot going on here. this track is only 2:50 but it feels longer. i haven't reviewed the original so i don't know how close this is but given the arrangement as-is i can't pass it.

    no

  16. i like the arrangement, flows more smoothly than the last track we heard from you. the mechanical sequencing was already described 3 different ways, but here's a 4th anyways: it's woody sounding, there's not a noticable sustain* going off and on in the phrasing. and, try some reverb with a long tail, that will give this mix some of the depth it needs and help cover up the not-so-good piano samples.

    no

*if sustain wasn't part of your artistic vision, that's fine too. but at least try the long tail reverb?

  17. the loopyness of this mix wouldn't be so bad if the instruments were more expressive, everything feels so dry and static. there needs to be more dynamics and expression in the melody and counter melodies.

the mix is fairly basic overall and although i've done my share of abrupt endings, this one is pretty cheap. not a bad mix, but it would benefit from a resubmit.

    no

  18. the riffs are phat! but the problem is it sticks pretty close to the original, the transition between the two themes is effortless, and it sounds empty overall, limited harmony and limited bass. ending is effortless as well. what would have saved this for me is an improv section or something aside from just repeating what was already played. i want to pass it but sadly i think this would benefit from a resubmit...

    no

  19. i was just playing doom2 yesterday. whee. anyways.

this offers limited musical ideas to the listener, for the majority of the track, it's the original, sped up with different drums and the melody rhythm is broken apart somewhat.

the bell section at 2:15ish is sorta cool though.

at 4:15 we get some interesting deviation.

but for the length (6 minutes) this needs to have more to it. feels like a broken record at times. also, the game sound effects are annoying. if you're going to use them, use them more effectively, don't just slap them on.
