  1. I don't know how the judges complain so much about Graylightning's Drifting Towards the Stars "not going anywhere" and then have no problem passing this one. Maybe they learned what ambient music *is* since then. Or maybe DJP just decided passing along their biased genre-based bishin' in a writeup once was enough.

    In any case, this is pretty schweet 8) I agree it would work really well for a modern Metroid game, and probably better than anything Nintendo would come up with, but still there could've been more variety. Of course, if it really *was* for use as background music in a Metroid game, too much variety would just be distracting, and sometimes ambient music can get by with even less variety than this, but in this case, it leaves a little something to be desired. Maybe some more real-world sound effects, changes in the atmosphere, or even more music in general woulda done it some good.

    This reminds me of the ICO soundtrack btw :)

    7.5 nice works out of 10! (Might've been 8+ for anyone else, but I know you can do better!)

    :nicework::nicework::nicework::nicework::nicework::nicework::nicework: .5

    Edit: D'oh, miscounted my Nice Works!

  2. ~Al~, my peers and I form a fusion of different backgrounds, perspectives, and ideas. This literal musical diversity will not always lead to unanimity. Some views will win out over others; that's the nature of voting. But it's not fair to condemn those who passed up a particular mix simply on the basis of your opinion of it.

    Enjoy the mix, but save the potshots for our other forums.

    I'll save them for here, thanks, when it's about this remix directly, and the judges don't know what ambient music is. I also included my opinion in the post, so you were the first one to post an off topic message.

    I don't know what you voted, so I don't know how applicable it is to you, but my statement stands about how judges whining about ambient/new age music that doesn't "go anywhere" shows a complete lack of understanding of the genre. People shouldn't be judging something they don't understand.

    And if they *do* have some understanding about the genre and they're still complaining, then they quite simply hate the genre, and if they can't post an unbiased opinion about genres they're biased against, they shouldn't be judges in the first place.

    Gray made something beautiful here, so don't try to protect anyone who nearly didn't allow it to be accepted just because of they don't know what ambient/new age music is, or they have a bias against it.

  3. Psst, judges, let you in on a little secret: Not all music has to follow the same structure. Expand your horizons sometime. Listen to some new age and ambient stuff. Aphex Twin's "Stone in Focus" is virtually 10 minutes of the same sound over and over, yet somehow the little variation it does have keeps it interesting the whole time. And it doesn't have to be interesting in an "foreground music" way to be music; if you're listening to it that way, the problem is with you, not the remix. Don't feel threatened by someone else's originality just because your views are too narrow to understand it. Expand your horizons instead. Looks to me like 5 out of 6 of the people who replied here have no problem hearing this for the beautiful introspective artwork that it is.

  4. Whatever i said on VGmix applies here :P i.e. just throw in Russell Cox and you've got enough composition power to destroy the universe!

    I still don't understand what's going on after 3:54 though... it's like one of you said "Hey, let's make this have a strong climactic ending!" and another said "No, let's just paste in a section from before and slightly modify it!" and you couldn't agree so you did both :P Did we really need to hear that part again after the "first" ending? Transition could've been smoother, at least.

    Other than that, this is a pretty seamless representation of your collective talents. Great work, guys :)

  5. There's something special about this mix... can't quite place my finger on it; it's simple, but it has a sort of quiet power. It reminds me of something, I don't know what... but I like it.

    8/10 Nice Works, +1 for the undefinable uniqueness about it :P

    :nicework::nicework::nicework::nicework::nicework::nicework::nicework::nicework::nicework:

    Edit: Oh, and since it took a little detective work for me to find it (broken link in ID tag)--

    Hmm... your other stuff isn't quite as impressive Joe B, but still nice to chill to :P "Midnight Lurking" is pretty spiff.

  6. He's different! Let's get him! *leads angry mob carrying torches and pitchforks*

    Zyko had some unique and enjoyable stuff on VGmix, including "Woods of the Invertrix" and "Of Darkness and Legend"-- this is up there with the best. Sometimes I get the impression that he doesn't actually put much time or effort into his mixes, and sometimes that's good and sometimes that's bad, but this one seems a little more well thought than some of his others and is definately interesting.

    Zyk I think you should do a little cleaning up to "Of Darkness and Legend" and submit it here :)

  7. Kamikaze Noodle, who's lurch and what's he running for and why should i vote for him and how even if i wanted to and when do i get my cookie and how will you know where to send it and whats a kamikaze noodle and what does it do and is the cookie kamakazie too :P

    Good mix, this is one of the most original games ever, even today. There need to be more bold games like this...

  8. Good stuff gray. You pretty much coulda mixed these two together Maybe someday you'll find more similar songs and do a big new-age megamix or something.

    I *think* I heard these both on VGmix (could be wrong), but I remember having at least one in my playlist for a long time Very good to listen to in the background when you don't want anything too heavy distracting ya. Keep these coming :)

  9. I liked your-- uh, oh what was the name of that mazedude track i had on my playlist for about a light year after coming to OC-- I wanted to say the FF7 temple one, but that was Lousyspy :P Well whatever it was I liked it a little better :P

    But this is great too :) I do like tracks that make good use of sound effect type stuff. Sorta like the FF6 devil's lab track (first one I ever heard like that).

    Good stuff :)

  10. Well, I just meant I had trouble applying the mix to Kefka himself. I kinda like those mixes where you can imagine something to do with the character-- like AmIEvil's "Death on the Snowfield", ya can't help but imagine Terra having lost someone close to her, and if the title were a little different, it could also be seen as an interpretation of Terra's personality-- a sad, cold girl, searching to find out what "love" means. When I can relate it to something in the game, it gets an extra point for good concept :P I was going to make a post in General to mention something like this one time, but it would probably just be flamed and misunderstood :P

  11. Eh... not enough to impress me or make me want to listen to it more than once. Even if it was longer... I don't think I'd want to hear any more of that low quality guitar work.... even if it was trying to sound like that, I couldn't tell, and it just didn't work for me. And there were very few other instruments to smooth it out. In a time when so many mixes are getting denied in order to "improve the overall quality" or whatever, I'm surprised this one made the cut.

    Edit: Just heard the "Underworld Rock" mix linked in the write-up, man that's SO much better.
