  1. I hope so. The potential is definitely there without having a blatant stinger.

    Kinda like the first Star Wars, it wrapped up the story at hand in case the film didn't meet expectations, while staying just opened ended enough so that a sequel didn't feel forced.

  2. Whoa man, what a rush! The movie was insanely predictable, but I didn't let that get in the way of just enjoying its excellent presentation; I was never bored, that's for sure.

    And those visuals were just in-credible. I hope I can get another chance at seeing it.

  3. I know its been addressed many times, but I'll ask anyway. Can we please have the alphabet back at the top of the homepage? Its a pain in the ass to find the particular remixes/remixers I'm looking for.

    I have to agree with this. I remember DJ Pretz saying it was a clutter issue, or something along those lines and to give the new layout a shot.

    After a while, the lack of alphabet shortcuts really just makes navigating all games together tedious. The search bar is a good substitute only if someone already has a specific game in mind.

    Is there anyway you can bring it back, maybe as a drop down menu or something? There's a drop down menu up there already, but users have no idea where in the list of games each page will end up, making the feature kind of pointless.

  4. I think Weaver was making a jest at director James Cameron's passion for such a crazy Sci Fi movie. But he did indeed write Avatar 12 years ago.

    The third is also true. The language was developed enough to give Tolkein and Klingon a run for the money.

    Seeing this tomorrow in 3D IMAX; I am so psyched!

  5. Aliens are just a convenient medium to easily exhibit racism/prejudice toward without being politically incorrect.

    While I agree with you there... the way the Nigerians were portrayed I think completely circumvented that. They could have been a random collection of criminal organizations of varied African nationalities, but the film seemed to take great effort to point out they were Nigerian.

    Still a good movie though.

  6. I guess the real experience is watching it in 3D, 'cause I'm not sure what's supposed to be groundbreaking about it. It was pretty good-looking and yeah, it was basically Dances with Wolves mixed with Ferngully with a futuristic spin on it, but I still don't see why people and the media are going nuts over it.

    I'm really glad to see this discrepancy; it sounds like Avatar has achieved the impact for highlighting 3D that Cameron was going for.

  7. An article and many others like it say that District 9 was born out of the halo movie production. And this is a huge letdown for me. Bungie is proving with its live-action movies that a halo movie is very possible. But to create District 9 instead? What a load of crap.

    I think you're confusing messy copyright issues between film companies for a conscious decision to abandon Halo for a different movie. Jackson very clearly explains in your link: "[Halo] fell apart because of internal politics at Fox and Universal. It had nothing to do with the budget or anything else. In fact, we hadn't even been greenlit at all at that point." District 9 was Peter Jackson salvaging the time and resources Fox and Universal had wasted with him. No, District 9 would not have happened if Halo were greenlit, but neither was District 9 a part of the decision to shelve the film. It sounds like District 9 wasn't even a subject until after Halo was dead.

    And if you're going to have aliens in a movie, make them either good or bad. Don't make them homeless Africans. That's exactly who the prones reminded me of.

    That was the whole point dude. The movie took a new fresh take on alien visitors and highlighted humanity's own weaknesses in the fear of strangers. In some incident, most of the ship's leaders were lost and the rest decided to hide in the working class majority that was brought along. The movie even explains that humanity was pissed that instead of enlightened free thinking beings, they only found a hideous army of extraterrestrial blue collars. They were then treated in a fashion that many countries today might treat disadvantaged refugees.

    I do feel a bit confused though, is this movie based off something well known? I watched the trailer but didn't see anything special about it.

    Nope, this is all James Cameron.

    What's special is that James Cameron hasn't made a real fictional narrative in 12 years. The guy gave us new age CGI and science fictional creations that paved the way for computer effects that are now commonplace in the media blockbuster. The alien probe in Abyss and T-1000 from Terminator 2: Judgement Day floored audiences at the time as he was the first to use computers to create photo realistic images.

    He wrote Avatar shortly after Titanic but felt technology couldn't convey the narrative vision he had for the story, so he sat back and did documentaries on underwater life, waiting. I've followed this project (what I could) since mid high school about six years ago. At the time, I thought it was nuts that he wanted to make a 3D movie, the resurgence in the industry hadn't happened yet.

    Now I'm really excited, as he is the first big name director who's come up with an idea specifically conceived for 3D. He even commissioned new 3D cameras just for the movie (part of its epic cost). Up until this point, 3D film has really been just a gimmick, thus why it has faded from use two times already, the 1950s and 1980s. Most 3D films made in this new resurgence are no different. The effect is a gimmick meant to wow audiences, and the gimmick over time wears then. But now Cameron is taking the challenge of showing that 3D can be a part of a film's narrative, rather than a cheezy effect that won't really matter once the film has a home release.

    I hope he can pull it off (it might fail terribly), but I won't find out for another week until I can make it out to Osaka.

  9. Keyboard and mouse. The versatility and plethora of buttons can't be beaten.

    Then wiimote, then normal controllers. Analog sticks just can't compare to mediums that allow quick reflexive aiming.

    Kind of curious, does anybody still use PC joysticks like the sidewinder. I remember them being ridiculously popular way back when, but I haven't seen them quite so much anymore.

  10. I want to know how the hell you got someone as big as Michael Jackson to work on a video game in the first place. Geez.

    I never doubted the rumor since the first two Sonic games were composed by members of Dreams Come True, a group popular in Japan at the time. In making the Sonic games bigger and better, it makes sense to seek out a bigger and better name to try and attach to the music. Still cool to have people finally come forward though.

    With the news of how he personally dropped his name over the sound quality, and Sega's passion for add-ons, I'm kinda surprised Sega didn't do a Sega CD version ala Eco.

  11. I really wish people would stop playing Mega Man games looking for cohesive plots and timelines.

    But the continuity. Think of the amazing, flawless continuity!

    Why does no one ever appreciate the continuity?!?!?

    In all seriousness though, if they ever do delve further into the two series' connection, I hope they leave it to the X games. Having a Mega Man game explain the transition would pretty much be like making the last classic Mega Man game outside of spinoffs or a reboot.

    I hope Capcom comes to its senses and gives us the true mega buster and power slide. 9 was nice, but it just didn't feel right. I don't care how good Mega Man 2 is, those two moves became Mega Man staples.

  13. In my opinion, no player who plays to win goes around looking for casual players and telling them how bad they are. To the contrary, casual players come to tournaments and when they lose, accuse their opponent of being a douche. The agression comes from the casual, not the other way around.

    Bullshit. Yes casual players can be asses too by whining in a tournament where they have no shot. I won't deny this happens, but competitive players are far from idle victims like you think.

    As an anecdotal example, I knew a pair of kids in college who were competitive Super Smash Bros Melee players. They actually traveled to tournaments and played for prize money and stuff. That's all well and good. But our group of friends were casual Melee players; we'd play for fun. But when they'd play with us (which was often, because they liked playing Melee and they'd join us when they saw us playing), they still played to win. They were undoubtedly better than us -- they would dominate the field, complaining all the while about how we were playing on stupid levels (ie not Final Destination or Battlefield), and that using items were dumb because they were pure luck, etc etc. And while they're doing this they're wave dashing around and only using top-tier characters and using I don't even know what other tricks to kick our asses seven ways from Sunday.

    We stopped letting them play with us after not-too-particularly-long. Because it wasn't fun. But here's the thing: a competitive player can ruin a scrub's game by playing competitively, but the reverse is not true. A scrub in a tournament does not ruin the tournament; they just get knocked out and play moves on. A competitive player in a casual gaming session, however, does ruin the casual gaming.

    This is completely true. It's hard running events for fun with a group of friends or non gaming club with an open invite, because there are competitive players who seek these outings to show off. It happened time and time again at college, to the point where it became nearly impossible to set up casual gaming get togethers because no casual player would want to play in light of the inevitable pros that would show up to dominate just because. People stopped playing simply because they thought they sucked at the game and there was no point.

  14. Isn't that every game ever made though? Games and competitions are made to decide who is better at a certain thing, even down to checkers and rock-paper-scissors. Its all about who can win. So if you're not playing to win, then what are you doing?

    Playing to have fun. That's what every game ever made was for. Competitions are for deciding who is better. It's unsportsmanlike to fail to differentiate the two. You shouldn't wail on those just looking to enjoy their pastime in an effort to show they are wasting their time. Smash Bros. is full of these people.

    The reverse is true as well. When competition is active, you shouldn't seek to destroy that competition out of amusement, ala the griefing common in many online games.

    Second of all, that's why the rules are still IN DEBATE. Sure there's a set of rules, but plenty of people disagree on them and plenty of people don't use them.

    The problem is that the dicks who do use them lord it over those who don't, in an attempt to establish superiority, either in skill, devotion to the hobby, or some combination of petty reasons.

    I ran a Smash Bros. Melee tournament once for a convention at my university, and in an attempt to appease the Smash Nazis I knew on campus I held two separate tournaments. One for them on Final Destination with no items. The other was on Hyrule Temple with all items.

    The first complaint I got from the Final D tournament was that the other tournament even existed in the first place. Then a group approached me over the fact that I wasn't using the MLG established rules of play, and the matches were four man free for alls. Then I got assholes bitching about wanting to use their own controllers. I gave them our reason for not allowing it; that in the middle of an event with 1000 people using generously loaned equipment we could not feasibly have people walking in an out of the game room with controllers. The equipment that had been loaned was tested before hand and found to be in working order. They still whined.

    Compare this to the Hyrule Temple tournament (which had a bigger attendance in both players and viewers) and who's participants had the heart to say "thanks" for running a large event for people to enjoy.

    And this is a response to the bold; what would you rather have them do? Let shitty people beat them for funsies and then be all like "good job"? That's stupid. No one loses for fun. Yes there are some douchebags, and a lot of them play Brawl.

    They don't have to throw a match, but neither do they have to rub in their skill and completely dominate a game when they clearly are the better player. In the story above, the reason I had even bothered with an itemless tournament was because among all the Smash Nazis I knew on campus, there were some who were great sports. Their skill was undisputed, but when they played with friends, they cut back a notch. They'd also take the time playing with weaker players as a chance to practice with other characters unfamiliar to them. They were the only reason I have any ounce of respect for organized Smash Bros. play.

    Bottom line, a good sport in gaming finds ways to keep himself challenged, regardless of the opponent's skill level. They also don't attribute failure to flukes.

  15. For instance, there is a controversy in Brawl over infinite chain grabs, grabs that combo into themselves infinitely and basically lead to grab -> death. These chain grabs literally make 7 entire characters unplayable in tournaments. If the Ice Climbers pull it off, it's an infinite on the ENTIRE CAST. Worst of all, they're really not that hard to do. Sure, I'm simplifying a bit, but the only reason people aren't just maining IC's, DDD, and Falco all day is because Meta Knight is so stupidly good (and easy to play). Let me re-iterate: 7 ENTIRE CHARACTERS cannot be played AT ALL in a tournament because it's a 100% guaranteed loss to do so.

    There's an easy fix to that problem, and it's playing matches with four opponents like the game was designed to be.

    I really, really hate the competitive Smash Bros. players. I can't think of any player demographic that has warped and sucked the fun out of a game more.

  16. It's been a grand long time since I went on Battle.net, but I remember most players being a good sport, especially since Blizzard runs a pretty tight ship.

    But like I said, that was long ago, pre WoW. Anyone still use Battle.net for any games, and how's the player base there?

    I think part of the issue is also age of the players. I had friends comparing Left4Dead on Steam and XBox, and how they couldn't stand the XBox players. They noticed encountering generally older players on the PC, while kids tend to play the console version. They blamed that as a main reason for the difference in behavior.
