  1. I think that their last album was pathetic, and they were heading rapidly downhill.

    Should have ended the thread.

Used to think their first was decent enough, but then I listened to more remixes. Their first - and even their second - album wasn't bad, but they never lived up to the hype, and every track on their albums pales in comparison to at least one other mix.

    Not worth bunching the panties.

  2. OCR: we only watch anime years after anime freaks do so that we're not labelled anime freaks but then we argue about said anime years later and get labelled anime freaks anyway whoops icon_ugly.gif

I edited that lengthy evangelion post the next day once I saw how silly and redundant it was, so point taken. But my real problem is, irrespective of area, I'm just generally late to the party. Forgive me, learned ones.

    Can't wait for the dub!!

Ha! You watch subs? Don't you care that you're getting a distorted presentation of the artist's original vision due to its conversion to film?

  3. An expose in how to not bump a thread. Brought to you by K.B.

Still dying here without my second season dub of Haruhi Suzumiya. Moreover, still bewildered that Adult Swim hasn't bothered with the series at all. I even e-mailed them! What more could they want?!?

PS: Death Note is the best ever for the first twelve episodes. Do stop there, though.

  4. The only Eva stuff I've had exposure to was the original anime. Would it be worth my while to go find any of the other installments of the manga/anime/whatever? I did enjoy the original anime, for the most part.

If you haven't seen the proper ending, go watch Death & Rebirth (minus Rebirth, as it is copypasted as the first part of EoE) and End of Evangelion. There are still plenty of unanswered questions, but it is far more satisfying than, well, you know.

Death isn't necessary, as it's a recap of eps 1-24, but there are several new scenes that add to the story. I found it to be worthwhile.

I've had conversations with people that seem to believe that the 3 endings that really flow together (anime, Death/Rebirth, End of Evangelion) are completely independent and may have nothing to do with one another.

These people are stretching. First off, Rebirth is simply the first part of EoE; I watched them back-to-back and not a frame was changed as far as I could tell. Now, comparing EoE to the series, nothing in the original eps 25/26 necessitates an outcome in real life. It's all mental. It could be argued that Shinji made a different choice, but there isn't enough evidence to make that more than speculation.

I read your bit about dragging. That's fair, as the series starts slowly. But I certainly wouldn't call it filler; it's measured, and upon conclusion everything fits into the psychological baggage each character carries and manifests. Watching the rebuild, I found myself relating far less to the characters than I did when watching the series. It's a different focus, and in hindsight I appreciate that the series spent as much time as it did on background. So, maybe you could trim out an episode or two's worth of it and not lose much, but I'd rather keep that little bit that would be lost and endure a slower pace, especially since it's only a one-season show.

and yes to rebuild seriously needing to get done quicker.

lol to Gainax getting anything done on time. v1, v1.01, then v1.11? Are you shitting me?

  5. Rebuild is ehh. The dub is terrible, but more importantly it misses a significant amount of character-building. That's understood given that it's going to be just four movies from 26 episodes, but that doesn't negate the impact. The battles are far more kickass though, so, if you've seen the original series, it's a treat to see what Gainax can do with a budget. All the same, if I were to guide someone new to the series, I'd say stick the series, death (- rebirth), and end of evangelion over the rebuilds.

Not sure what you mean by eva continuities though. Congratulations didn't seem at odds with end of evangelion. Am I missing something? Are you talking manga?

  6. I posit that all basing of rythms and pacing from time sigs alone is pure wankery.

In that compound meters are inherently fucked.

    PROVE ME WRONG.

In other news, Marble Madness is

    .

Gonna be a racist and post the spoilers in white.

4x3 (or even 5+5+2 if you want to go additive all the way)

4x6 or 4,5,5,4,3,3 (the latter is uglier but makes more sense; additive ftw)

34 beats (wtflol [if you find a time sig here, you win the rodeo])

    5x6

6+7, 6+6, 5+5+6 (or 4x10+1, but that looks worse and is more awkward)

  7. Fantastic.

It's not every day one gets to review a mix of a game in which one is currently enveloped, so this is a veritable treat for me. Please forgive the rambling, as this requires a bit of background for full expression.

A novice to shmups, I finally took the longstanding recommendation and started EoSD about three weeks ago. Many, many deaths - and no 1ccs - later, this remix was posted. This was a sign. I had to touhou up and beat the game. I had to experience the source vgm in its original glory so I could fully appreciate the remix.

I still cheated and read the reviews first; so, when I had finally heard the source (in-game) and then this remix, all I heard was Elfman. While that, in itself, was a brilliant and spot-on realization of a section of the source, that's hardly an adequate descriptor for the entire piece. Elfman does touhou? No sir, that will not do. Not that anyone has painted it solely as such, but it bears clarifying that there is far more going on here than such a first-blush likeness. Taking some time apart from the remix, and many more rounds spent trying to defeat the dirty little secret herself, I have since seen it in an entirely new light.

The ominous, restrained chaos... insanity... is manifest throughout. The Elfman-esque sections are playful - dementedly playful - while the remainder are menacing. From a psychological perspective, the portrayal is accurate. And terrifying. The chills at 0:40, for instance: they... the voices. I double the volume in masochistic horror. And that's not the only instance thereof. But, perhaps best of all, is how powerful the piece remains. At first, I was hesitant on this point. The original is driving and unforgiving, and it would be impossible for a subdued remix to match this. After repeated listens however, this has as much, if not more power than the source itself. It is not as consistently direct, no; but it is brooding, and it has its fair share of fury. Then, at the end, it is a culmination of... everything.

Then again, I might be biased, as I believe that nothing is capable of kicking as much ass as a well-arranged orchestra. Therefore, I will simply posit that PR has done more than justice to the original, and even if one (however unimaginably so) does not care for the given styles, one can surely appreciate the utilization thereof and the full realization of the undercurrents of the source.

Thank you, Mr Paulsen, for haunting my dreams.
