  1. Personally, I write music from what I whistle and hear in nature. Basically, I always start composing by writing the soundscape - the sounds which define the tune.

Then again, I always write ambient music, so...I tend to wander about with a recorder when I'm in the mood to write music. I just walk, hands-in-pockets-style, and I listen when I get home to what I've got. I know that sounds like a retarded John Cage-esque method, but it's good by me. I just take sounds that I like - a good gust of wind, some birds, those shutters on triangular bill-boards...

That probably doesn't work for other genres, though. Sorry...

  2. Wow. Didn't know all this existed! I'm a fan - thanks, guys! I'll try ripping stuff when I get the chance and let you know how it worked.

    As for my contribution:

    http://bluemars.org/

    http://www.limbikfreq.com/

Both come highly recommended by yours truly. Big fan 'o' both. Thanks again, eh?

my thoughts exactly. I was going to reccomend that if no one else had.

+1 to Station Ripper, it works.

Awesome! I'll do that tonight - there's a torrent of Bluemars/Cryosleep which is epic, but Limbik'll be a good addition.

    Asaudan: No problem, man!

  3. Okay, so lemme give you the story before I ask the question:

It was Friday. I live in an apartment notorious for students, and the landlord was out. You can imagine what happened. I felt like I lived in residence again. It was awful.

While that tremendous amount of suck was ongoing, a friend sent me a link to a radio station called Bluemars/Cryosleep. Between it and Limbik Frequencies, my Friday was made tolerable. I sat in my apartment while the noise went all about; I made tea, listened to these stations, and was happy.

My question is: does anyone a) enjoy this sort of thing; B) understand Internet radio and how to put it onto an MP3 player (I somehow doubt this is possible...); c) Any other stations with ambient electronica playing; and d) artists in that field to recommend.

I've always been an ambient fan - Boards of Canada is a must for any MP3 player I own - but this Bluemars/Cryosleep takes that to a whole new level! I've convinced myself that I like it, and I'd like to find other stations. Most of the crap on Google is either experimental/atonal, BoC clones, or just without variety...

  4. My Must-Own List for SNES:

    Starfox

    F-Zero

    Pilotwings

    Kirby Superstar

    EarthBound

Super Mario RPG: Legend of the Seven Stars

    Gradius III

    Super R-Type

    Super Mario World

Super Mario All-Stars (esp. if you don't own a NES)

Super Mario World 2: Yoshi's Island

    Zombies ate my Neighbours

    Megaman X - X3

    Illusion of Gaia

Goof Troop (not kidding - fun as hell game)

    Lemmings

Legend of Zelda: Link to the Past

    Super Metroid

    Donkey Kong Country 1-3

    Super Star Wars (and kin)

    Super Indiana Jones

The Magical Quest Starring Mickey Mouse

    Aladdin

These are the games I have experience with - what others say are totally probably maybe cool, too - just adding/reaffirming some old standbys.

  5. I've not been able to be as involved in the day-to-day of OCR lately, and haven't had the time to get involved with discussion of this.

I just PMed Arek on his decision to cancel this with no formal release of anything. I'm not down with the work here fading away or not being recognized, and that's basically what will happen if nothing's done. None of the staff had an opportunity to review the content, and that prevents us from making an educated decision on whether we should attempt to release something. I say let's take a listen to the muzak and WIPs, and if it's as cool as this art, let's do something with it. We have smaller albums, we have other concept albums, we have albums that include WIPs as bonus material. I think it's too impulsive to dismiss the work outright; let's take the opportunity to assess what's there and decide if we can release it.

THANK YOU! I'm kinda sad that this would otherwise get ignored. I'm downloading this artwork like a fiend - I see no reason why those people who worked their butts off should get no recognition. This is some amazing work and it deserves to be known and shared.

    Thank you, Liontamer!

  6. I'd say the PS3 unless you REALLY want the exclusives the other system has to offer. I'd personally rather be playing stuff like Uncharted and Ratchet and Clank instead of Halo and Viva Pinata.

Very true, very true. I'm thinking of PS3 when Tales of Vesperia is confirmed for it in N. America. Tales is the only reason I'm joining the new generation (except for the Wii, which is my family's machine, despite the fact I bought all the stuff for it...) I might get another Wii, though. Miss out on a lot of stuff, but get Nintendo's roster...

  7. Ugh, I hated that this project fell apart.

Same as the Banjo Kazooie Project.

I'm worried the Link's Awakening Project is never going to come out....

Three totally worthy games...still, I understand the problem. The effort that goes into these things is MASSIVE. Like, hard-core mecha-extreme. And it's plainly obvious when you listen to an OCR project versus a random one that the OCR project is a labour of both love and some serious skills.

At least we have DKC2 to look forward to...I wonder if the Milky Way Wishes people could all just throw what they've got on the table. I don't know how far the album has progressed, but, if it's songs short, maybe with enough requests someone will take it up? Bit-by-bit, the project, though not so much a project, could just be limped onto OCR, not as an official deal, but at least to give people like Binjovi here a little more credit for their undoubtedly amazing work. I mean, Ska Buffet is in the works...there may yet be hope!

  8. GOOD NEWS EVERYBODY! Parts have been distributed to folks who need them. I'm going to do some final tweeking to the drums and mix, and eagerly await the live parts to roll in. MAJOR MAJOR thanks to PR for doing the arrangement and sheet music and everything. Also, I'm currently in the process of figuring out the deal for vocals, but more on that later. Good luck to those recording their parts, and please remember to not process your recordings (all of that stuff will be done by myself/Avaris/PR).

Good news indeed! I love even the WIP - can't wait for the finished product! This is a shit-ton of imagination, right here. Lyrics are priceless, too. Judges better take this - I'm stoked for this! I've always loved the Kirby soundtrack - just lettin' you know I can't wait.

  9. Mkay - a definite improvement! Thanks for pitching that stacking intro. Neko makes a point - to make sure (not that I don't trust Neko - I missed it the first time), I plugged in my headphones...and...yeah. You've got tuning problems at 1:43. Those chimes, too, but I'm not sure I mind them. I'll let you know when I re (re, re) listen to it.

You've done some good work thus far - now, you gotta make it your own. If you liked Gigi D'Agostino, give some of his ideas a try. Bla Bla Bla works because of the vocal samples he uses to make the song - the Riddle is another good tune. Find an electronica artist that works for you, and mimic them. I'm not sure if this works for this sort of thing, but I got my trumpet sound by mimicing people I like (Maynard Ferguson, Bill Chase, Bill Watrous [trombone, I know], Louis Armstrong...you get the idea). Because I can't do it exactly like they do, I find my own style by mimicing and seeing what happens.

Clear up your tuning problems and just listen to people for a while. I don't care who - Coburn, BoC, Mu-Ziq, Bola, Basshunter - whatever floats your boat. Find their style - something that really clicks with you. Try to stick that feeling into your tune. Keep it aquatic, if you know what I mean. To be completely honest, I think this'd make an awesome ambient track...I'd have a tough time dancing it up. For now, try to find a style, mimic it with your own twists, remember the environment, and clear up your tuning troubles. This is an improvement over your last track!

Neko's right about repitition, too - try to change up your chord structure. Don't leave it bare, if you can. At the same time, don't clutter the soundscape. It's a delicate balance, but you do have to put some meat on the track.

    Good luck!

  10. Hey there!

I was aiming for a trancy/dance vibe with it, hence the dragged out intro. I'm aware that it's a bit formulaic, so that's why any comment and suggestion would be greatly appreciated! Many thanks!

And I even made a little cover art for it!

    l_315f726a522e4f08971628231eaa7efd.png

    Liking the cover art, man!

But, you've got your own critique bang-on. Your approach is a pretty good dance track underneath a re-do of the melody. A few suggestions to fix that:

    1) A breakdown. Sticking in a few dynamic tempo shifts, or one really big one with some sort of lead-up gives a piece a lot more energy and is a break from the initial melody. Don't rehash the melody.

    2) This is a personal taste sorta-thing, but I find the stacking intro (in general) a little cliche. Try to incorporate some of the spirit of the original. Think, for example: what's Mario doing? Try something part determined, part-worried - think martial & a nice, sexy drone combined.

    3) Change the melody instrument - it's way too close to the original, and the judges will nab you on it hardcore.

I'm not sure why, but when I hear the source, I get Gigi D'Agostino vibes. YouTube "bla bla bla" - see if it inspires you. Hope that helps!

  11. I'd just like to apologize for my earlier post.

Metroid Prime? Seriously? Entire game was a breeze on hard. WTF me, wtf.

Someone summarize this thread for me right-quick. Just read through the 3000+ posts and determine the hardest boss. No big thing.

Life is the hardest boss, man. No matter how many potions you drink, you'll still get owned by it.

    That's my take.

  12. You can wait the hour or 2 hours or however long until your class is over... your education is important! You waited for DKC2 for this long, another couple hours won't hurt. I'm not saying this to offend any DKC2 people, I just think that education is very, very important. :)

serious monkey business IS education, friend :)

Canada's Foreign Service can wait for Serious Monkey Business. Actually, if anything, Summoning of Spirits was worse - I was second-year then, so my courses were lecture-based. Anymore, I just write a ton of crapola. Serious Monkey Business will consume my waking hours that day...

  13. Well... yeah. Safety Ring will protect anyone from a buttload of the enemy spells. I never really wait for Culex and company to run out of FP, though. Being around level 24 helps, too. Then it's just a matter of using single-target skills and nailing all your timed hits.

Not that beating Culex really gets you anything valuable.

Culex is tough, but not that tough.

I never used the lazy shell on him, because I never found the lazy shell until the advent of the internet.

Opposite for me - I didn't know the Safety Ring, but I knew of both Lazy Shells. The leveling thing is pretty critical. On second thought, it's not too bad - still tough, though, relatively speaking.

I don't know if this counts as a boss fight, but Genis runs in the Coliseum are wicked tough. I just finished it tonight, and my characters are pretty decent level.
