  1. Conservative, but doing something very specific, as the arranger (and mix title) explains... - djp --- ReMixer name: dbellieny real name: Daniel Bellieny email address: website: https://www.youtube.com/channel/UCMp-n8QarIyUmdzQlBx-q2Q userid: 54726 Name of game(s) arranged: The Elder Scrolls V: Skyrim Name of arrangement: Celtic Dragonborn Name of individual song(s) arranged: The Dragonborn Comes comments about the mix: I really love Jeremy Soule's score. And this song, specifically, has only in-game a capella interpretations. And there is no internet version (even the most famous) addressing its real intention, which is: to be played as a celtic song. So I decided to write this arrangement, and try to bring some justice to this beautiful piece.
  2. I liked the intro galloping concept, but the instrumentation later on is a little simplistic/basic... arrangement is pleasant enough, could use some feedback. - djp --- ..downloadable.. 3. Very cool; some production nitpicks but uber-creative arrangement, good vocal, catchy stuff. 5. Don't know the sources well, but it's Hylian so it's probably dope. Also mix title lolz. -djp --- ReMixer: Hylian Lemon Game: Tiny Barbarian DX System: PC Composer: Jeff Ball Arrangement title: 'Vators Gonna Bait Songs arranged: Rebirth, Haters Gonna Hate Comments: Jeff Ball has written and performed in a number of ReMixes here. I'd like to help get him represented as a composer as well, so here's an arrangement I made in early 2015 for shadow24's Artist Appreciation Competition. In typical Hylian Lemon fashion, I started with a plan for one source tune and ended up including two; it's an easy way to churn up arrangement ideas without straying too far from what made the originals great. And the originals are definitely great. "Rebirth" really stuck with me because it ends with a hilariously well-choreographed moment that toys with your expectations. It's among my favorite examples of good integration of music, gameplay, and emotions. I recommend checking out the game, the soundtrack, and Jeff's beard if you haven't already. It might sound something like this. I can't remember what exactly inspired me to go with jazz but I was working on my orchestrated medley from Metroid when I came up with it. It started with the bass/piano part that you hear in the beginning. I thought it had such a cool vibe to it and should definitely turn it into a full piece. Once I started getting more pieces together I realized this has a Dave Brubeck sound to it. I immediately started thinking of how to make an album cover that fused Dave Brubeck's Time Out album artwork and the metroid characters. Luckily I have a very talented artist for a sister and she made it a reality. 10. Seems pretty damn funky; arrangement needs vetting. Production not 100% consistent across instrumentation, BUT plenty of good stuff (EP, wah guitars, solo at ~2'30")... I dug it quite a bit. - djp --- Hi all, Peter Fernandes here, first-time submitter! I did an arrangement of a couple of my favorite tracks from Sonic Adventure. Here's the info; thanks! Link to download 192kb/s mp3: Link to video (in-studio performance): https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=bh0WgDF91tM Contact Information: ReMixer Name: Peter Fernandes Real Name: Peter Fernandes email: website: http://www.pfernandes.com userId: 54646 Submission Information: Name of game arranged: Sonic Adventure (1998, Dreamcast) Name of arrangement: "Red Barrage Aquarium" Name of individual songs arranged: "Bad Taste Aquarium" and "Red Barrage Area" Comments on the remix: I've been producing video game-inspired music for a while now, but this is my first straight-up cover. Sonic the Hedgehog games to me have always had wonderfully varied soundtracks, combining rock, electronic, funk, and Latin music even from the first games in the early 90's! Sonic Adventure on the Sega Dreamcast I think carries on that tradition of excellence in a real way, and I picked two of my favorite tracks from the "Hot Shelter" level to remix: "Bad Taste Aquarium" and "Red Barrage Area," written by Jun Senoue and Kenichi Tokoi respectively. The result is a funky fusion piece (with accompanying in-studio video performance, https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=bh0WgDF91tM) that features an extended guitar solo from one of my favorite guitar players, Brett Garsed. Dutch guitarist, Richard Hallebeek, plays all the backing guitars including the funky comping and some really badass rock riffs that I pulled straight from the original material. Rounding out the rhythm section are LA session musicians Ric Fierabracci with some great slap bass and Shane Gaalaas banging the drums (he also provided me with some awesome multi-angle fills in the video). I did all the keyboard stuff and production including a synth solo towards the end over my favorite groove from the song. All of the parts, instrumentally, in the two source tracks are so well written; I really wanted to assemble a crew that could lay down the law technically, but also bring new life to two tracks that are now over fifteen years old! After months of work putting this whole thing together, it's really an indescribable pleasure to see this music come back to life! Sorry, forgot to include links to the source! I think the two themes blended together quite well. The mixing stage of the production process took the most time and effort, however provided a lot of experience - next time I'll know not to do 50% stuff I did this time around. Picking Nightwish as a role model for mixing/mastering was a really bad idea, mainly because I don't have the excuse of saying "Hey, you can hear the soloist vocals, right? Who the hell cares if you can't tell apart every instrument/voice of the orchestra/choir." Aaaaand I had to fit things into 192kbps, which was rather jarring this time around. On a brighter note, I think it turned out quite well overall. Choir harmony turned out good, orchestra (though not always noticable) gives a nice touch and the guitar solos, though not the best I've made, turned out quite well. The sources nicely reinforced the punchy feel of the piece. Not sure if it's necessary to post elvish/orcish/dwarwish/druidtounge lyrics, but I'll append them anyway: Seiya! Nodire, fonite ha! 16. If someone uses bad reasoning, and (more critically) inflates & overstates the certitude of studies, but stops short of advocating censorship, they are in a sense endorsing those rhetorical methods, are they not? Lending them support? I agree that the conclusion matters, and might even agree that it matters the most, but you lose me on it being completely & totally okay to abuse science in the name of rhetoric in the exact same fashion that censors have, and that not being a problem that is RELATED to censorship, because I think it strengthens those weapons & perpetuates those misunderstandings...
  17. Albion ONE would be the better value if you're going head-first into serious orchestral/scoring work and this is the start of an ever-expanding library you plan on building. OE1 & OE2 are both absolutely solid and would be the better value if you want to check the "symphonic/orchestral" box so you can use those types of elements in your work, but not necessarily focus exclusively on symphonic/scoring in general. My two cents; can't really go wrong either way.

  20. Seems legit; just need arrangement check, probably kosher since Brandon's gotta a pretty good feel for these things. - djp ---- Howdy Game: Ace Combat Zero (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Ace_Combat_Zero:_The_Belkan_War) Source: Zero Theme https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=K6gdyiLZxJ8 Title: Guinevere Link: Hi! After hearing The Limit which was commissioned by TotalBiscuit, I was approached to make another Ace Combat remix, this time commissioned for 4Player Network and their series of GOTY videos (https://www.youtube.com/playlist?list=PLT0DdETrunnQVkwhnRy_WL_hft9dEDJr_) I'm always intimidated by how much work a song like this is to cover, but I think it turned out amazing -- there's even a callback to The Limit at 3:29 where it plays the melody from The Liberation of Gracemeria. Definitely similarities between the 2 sources, but so much of a different flavor with the Zero Theme to work in a lot of cool acoustic parts -- including bongos that were recorded in 1 take. That was a really intense bongo performance. When I was done I was like "wow, that felt epic, I gotta use this take." You rarely get that feeling with guitars. Unless you manage to actually record your fabled "perfect take" which is usually not what happens. Big thanks to Chris Davis for the remix request, and also for naming the song. About the title, he said, "Part of that particular Ace Combat's theme is the Knights of the Round Table wherein the knights themselves are the veritable ace pilots of the conflict. The track preceding Zero on the AC0 soundtrack is called Morgan, named for Morgan Le Fey who tried to kill King Arthur, which serves as the intro piece leading into Zero as it is the final boss battle of the game. As such, Guinevere would fit perfectly." ---------

Pretty; a little quiet. - djp --- Hey, I've got another Kirby solo piano piece, this time representing one of my favorite themes from Kirby Air Ride; I thought I'd try something a bit closer to my classical roots this time around. I always loved the tension in Frozen Hillside's theme, and I thought it'd lend itself well to a more emotionally varied interpretation, with subtle dynamic changes at first, then leading up to a big, intense climax before finally reaching a satisfying, celebratory conclusion. That being said, Sub Castle BGM and Super Mario World are not my absolute favorite musical piece and game, respectively (my wife hasn't even played the game), but this merely seemed an easy vision to be our first toe in the water with OC Remix. It should also be noted that this is our first and only attempt thus far to make dub step. 23. I DID miss it, possibly because a good number of those references (Kuchera, etc.) are just op-eds. As for the actual studies, which of those links do you think provides "all the evidence" for a "profound impact"? Point me to the smoking gun that would back that sort of statement up. None of them speak to causation, only correlation... some are with relatively small sample sizes... and as I mentioned, there exist studies that don't even find any correlation (http://kotaku.com/what-to-make-of-a-study-about-gaming-and-sexism-1698543308 - with a relatively large sample size). I like how you ended your post by criticizing me of trying to change someone's argument to a different stance, but began your post by changing my own argument... to a difference stance. I never argued that media does not create violent tendencies in people, nor did I argue that it was therefore impossible for it to influence any other behaviors. I simply stated that ANY certitude surrounding effects, OR absence of effects, is misplaced, since these types of studies are difficult to conduct in the first place (turns out human beings are complex, human culture even moreso), usually have small sample sizes (which REALLY doesn't help), and involve various metrics that are extremely difficult to pin down. Anyone articulating certitude surrounding the body of evidence, i.e. talking about a "profound impact," is dramatically overstating what we know, to service an agenda. This is precisely what advocates for the censorship of video games on the basis of violence have done in the past - inflated existing studies, ignored any studies dissonant with their agenda, and overstated the degree of certitude such data supports. If you're completely cool with all that, then we'll just agree to disagree. See https://www.insidehighered.com/news/2015/08/28/landmark-study-suggests-most-psychology-studies-dont-yield-reproducible-results & http://www.sciencemag.org/content/349/6251/aac4716 for a bit of background. It's also quite worth reading http://heterodoxacademy.org/2015/09/14/bbs-paper-on-lack-of-political-diversity/ which refers to http://journals.cambridge.org/action/displayAbstract?fromPage=online&aid=9945982&fulltextType=RA&fileId=S0140525X14000430 So you've got an academic field with: A severe lack of political diversity A severe problem with reproducibility Output that is routinely picked up by ideologues & inflated beyond its scope and certitude for rhetorical effect This is not a recipe for success...
  24. Did you read the quote I provided? From http://feministfrequency.com/2014/06/16/women-as-background-decoration-tropes-vs-women/ I'm going to keep this simple: Talks about "profound impacts" without explaining why they're profound, or even what they are... Mentions "all the evidence" without explaining or citing what it is... This is shit you'd lambaste people like Rush Limbaugh for doing - conjuring incontrovertible, "profound" evidence out of thin air. The double standard is painfully palpable. If the effects she's describing are more general, as you've been claiming, and they simply reinforce existing cultural stereotypes, then riddle me this: How could those same effects be measurably "profound"? How could they be measured... at all? How does one quantify the "reinforcement" of a "negative cultural attitude"?? What would "all the evidence" even be? To be sure, there HAVE been studies... some of those studies have repeatedly failed to prove a link between, say, violence in games and violent behavior. Others have found short-term effects and established a thin correlation, but not causation. She's not citing which studies she's talking about, she just talks about "profound" impacts and "all the evidence" - again, if this were right-wing rhetoric, you'd be (rightly) eviscerating it. Sorry... this reeks of hypocrisy; you're bending over backwards, here... When you start wildly overstating the body of scientific evidence & its certitude, sans citation, for the effect of the consumption of media on viewers, you're a heartbeat away from censorship. That's EXACTLY the trick that's been used in the past. Otherwise, why not cite the research that's provided "all the evidence"? Because it's inconclusive? Otherwise, why overstate the effect? PROFOUND impacts, remember... Thoughts? When you say "nothing you've said has budged me even an inch" and again speak in such extremes ("million miles away from censorship", etc.), it sounds more like you're trying to convince yourself, to me...
