What error message did you receive? Not seeing this setting as being configurable on our end, but maybe I'm just missing it... -
Giving away SteamWorld Dig codes (All gone!)
djpretzel replied to Soul Splint's topic in General Discussion
Don't need a code, just stopping by to say I loved this game... played it on VIta, actually... wish it were longer, hoping there's a larger sequel in the works... -
Right... and the only reason she doesn't meet substantial resistance is because they can produce Joe. TBH it DOES seem a bit off... the citadel wasn't undefended, as you say, but Joe does excitedly say that it is... Max/Furiosa's plan would never have worked if Joe & co. hadn't been stopped.... and even so, without having him to show, they would have been attacked. It all kinda... works out. Didn't bother me much, but seems like a legit observation. I think you CAN watch right past it, and I think a lot of people are, and I think that's fine. To me the "Who killed the world?" and "Our babies will not be warlords" scrawled in giant black letters in the first 15 minutes, and the repetition of the first of those sentences as actual dialog, was a bit of a tell... not to mention not just having the escapees be "breeders," but going for the visual/emotional jugular of one of them being quite pregnant. Like I said, you can watch right past it and enjoy the movie just fine... and perhaps ideology/message actually work best when it's a little more subtle like that, as opposed to overtly preachy. I don't think either myself or Bleck have indicated that it's propagandist... just ideological.

In fairness to Bleck, there's been a conversational vein of "OMFG WHY CAN'T I JUST ENJOY DA MOVIE!?!?!?!" You can. No one has said you can't, or even that you shouldn't. I certainly enjoyed it. Twice. I personally didn't find my enjoyment dampened by taking a minute or two to think about what I saw... It's a discussion topic. For discussion, see... If you want to argue that the symbolism & themes aren't there, or that they are being misinterpreted, go for it. If you want to make a blanket statement that no films should ever be analyzed, ever, you can do that as well. However, it's a little obnoxious to be all frustrated & exasperated and act borderline persecuted just because someone else disagrees and/or actually wants to discuss the film. On a discussion thread. For the film. Eh? If not here, where? Or was this supposed to just be a ROCKS! vs. SUCKS! poll of single-sentence superlatives?
-
I think you're confusing "pigeonholing" a film with simply analyzing a film. The genre of the film is clearly action. You don't have to analyze it to enjoy it, but some of us enjoy the analysis, can't turn that part of our brains off (and/or don't want to), and can simultaneously enjoy the more accessible & entertaining aspects while still, you know... giving it some thought. Again, there's a difference between not giving "two shits if it's feminist or not" and just, you know, thinking about it... this isn't a zero-sum proposition. You can want to see a good movie AND care about interpreting it a bit. If you don't want to think about it and don't like it when others think about it, perhaps a discussion topic dedicated to talking about it isn't the place to be? I can assure you, you're NOT the only one who prefers not to analyze their entertainment critically, but I'm not sure if that's company you want to brag about keeping...

Already covered why I think that's off-base; doesn't add anything new to what I've already said. Also, no one suggests that they continue breeding, either - it's simply not addressed. They may want to, they may not, but either way, they want control of their reproductive rights. That doesn't seem "silly" to me, and the criticism of the omission of anyone suggesting they do "anything other than breed" seems more worthy of chuckles... where would such dialog have fit in? It would have seemed bizarre... for someone who talks about things being "shoe-horned awkwardly", he's criticizing the film for NOT having dialog that would have been exponentially MORE awkward and considerably MORE horned into a much tinier and thus MORE uncomfortable shoe!! e.g. Just sayin'... that's some pretty shoddy criticism.

I wouldn't have seen it again or raved about it myself if I felt like it was blunt, didactic, and/or overbearing thematically. With the exception of the bag of seeds and maybe a couple other moments/lines adding up to MAYBE a full minute of material, I think it was handled very well. I nevertheless do think the themes were quite explicitly there; they were just easy to look past (or at least not dwell upon at length) given the frenetic pacing & amazing action. ...yeah, but that short conversation is the one that involved the bag of seeds. And she explains - "back then, everyone had their fill" (or something like that) - back then, you didn't HAVE to kill people. That was before (drumroll) ...the world was killed. By men. "Who killed the world?" is rather explicitly painted on the walls of the breeder place when Joe barges in and discovers them missing, and is again recited as a line of dialog. I'm fairly sure the answer is: men. Also on the walls: "Our babies will not be warlords" - I think you're conflating slavery in the abstract with the very specific form of reproductive slavery - to me, a stand-in for reproductive rights in general - that's actually playing out. Give it some thought. I think the "green place," and the bag of seeds, and the many mothers, and the emphasis on reproductive rights, and the "Who killed the world?" refrain, and the depiction of men as (almost unilaterally) unreasonable and selfish religious nuts, and the depiction of women as (almost unilaterally) reasonable and compassionate individuals uniquely capable of seeing past Joe's BS and having emotions and what not adds up to something a bit more than just "bad guys vs. good guys," as you've laid it out. I don't think it's a stretch - I think it's rather explicit, actually - but like I said, I also think it's handled really well, offers a refreshing change of pace for this genre, and makes it all feel a bit new (in addition to the stylized, fantastic directing) without really proselytizing.

Hey, if that helps you enjoy the movie more, stick with that interpretation Doesn't sound like it did, though... anyways, to me, there are plenty of signals that are ultimately rather overt that suggest more thought was put into it all than simply "OH DUDE THAT'S SO COOL!!" Part of the brilliance of the film is that it undermines its own badassery - you're definitely supposed to have that "OMFG YES!!" moment when The Doof Warrior pops up, and if you don't get beyond that, it still works as entertainment, but... well, sometimes a cigar is just a cigar, and sometimes a guitar is just a guitar, but framed in this context, I think it's pretty freakin' Freudian... A little too transparently, at one or two points. Having seen it twice now, I think it overplays this angle & smashes viewers over the head with it specifically with the old woman's bag of seeds. Yes, yes, yes, we GET it... women = life.... men = death.... life good, death bad.... creation > destruction... I think this was all clearly conveyed WITHOUT the need for an ADDITIONAL symbol; bag of seeds felt silly to me the first time, and my second viewing confirmed: wasn't necessary, felt condescending and manufactured. Minor nitpick, in the grand scheme of things, but I would have cut it. It lessens the film in its crude & redundant symbolism.

Right... but it's a cult. Cults often expend resources, even when resources are scarce, in the course of ritual & to heighten the "experience" - I suppose it might even add legitimacy to seemingly-superfluous things (like flamethrowing guitarists) that they are intentionally done with the knowledge that scarce resources will be consumed in the process. If there's no cost to the pomp & circumstance, it might seem hollow? If you watch movies looking for anything that might be anachronistic or implausible, I personally think you should focus on the bigger-ticket stuff that's integral to the plot. In this case, I think I've provided an adequate potential explanation that jives with anthropological understandings of cults... instead of a human sacrifice, it's like a gasoline sacrifice... an ostentatious showing of power meant to intimidate partly because of the resources it consumes. You also see this type of display in nature, usually as part of sexual selection... And on that note, I do think the guitar (especially in light of its pyrotechnic ejaculations AND eventual fate) is a pretty transparent phallic symbol... So the guitar is a wang that shoots fire... a wasteful, insane, indulgent display of masculinity and blind rage. I don't think that's a stretch, given the emphasis on what happens to it (one of the 3D effects, too!) in the end... I'd love to get into a lengthy discussion about the ways the film could be interpreted as "feminist" - I put the word in quotes only because, along with "feminism", it tends to get interpreted at least two different ways. Anyone have thoughts on that topic?

Studio One 3 - My new main DAW
djpretzel replied to djpretzel's topic in Music Composition & Production
Uh... lolz? "I've heard it's bad" isn't particularly incisive critique, secondhand or otherwise... as Nabeel said, watching someone struggle with any DAW is going to make that DAW seem inelegant. If your primary metric of evaluation when it comes to DAWs is "How closely does the MIDI editing resemble FL Studio??" then it stands to reason that the best DAW is always going to be, drumroll, FL Studio... I'm genuinely curious about the limitations of a "standard DAW mixer" in this regard - with multi-instruments that have their own bussable FX and what not, can you give me a scenario/use case of something FL/Live/Bitwig can do from a routing/mixing perspective that S1 can't? I'm not skeptical, I just want examples... it's certainly true that those DAWs are more associated with EDM, but that in and of itself doesn't necessarily say much... I just learned something - thanks I suppose I should be clear on my reasons for departing from Cubase: Hate dongles. Also feel that they contribute to overall instability. Cubase has been around for ages, but I'd STILL see crashes on exit, for instance, even with the latest & greatest. Or it would hang and sit there for a minute before closing. Multi-screen still feels lame, even after the improvements w/ 8. Feels a bit bloated. This is a criticism that PreSonus like to make, without naming names. It's pretty clear that they're talking about Cubase, when they do. Now SOME of that "bloat" is actually an advanced feature set that is very important to a niche group of power users. But there's so many things like that, it ends up feeling a bit clasutrophobic, to me. I suppose if I were one of those power users, I'd feel differently. Disappointing point releases. 6, 6.5, 7, 7.5, 8...I've been underwhelmed. I was actually super-excited about chord track, but while the concept is great, the implementation seems lame to me, primarily because of my main beef: Usability, or lack thereof. As the featureset has expanded, there hasn't been a clear & consistent effort to unify it all in a way that still makes sense and feels graceful. The power is definitely there, no doubt, and the core features are still quite usable, but the UX makes the newer stuff feel tacked-on, which it essentially is. Still a great DAW, just should have moved away from dongles a long time ago & modernized their codebase and UI/UX. Seems like no one on their dev/management teams is willing to make that type of commitment, so they just keep on adding features and additional plugins, when the underlying engine is what needs streamlining. Just my two cents. Even with 9? It took them 9 versions, but it DOES seem better now... As a sidenote to those interested in S1V3 who want to run it on multiple computers... recently learned that the Pro version comes with five activations that can be managed online, so with a single license you can run it on five of your own computers/laptops, mix of osx/windows not a problem. Love it. -

Diggin' the art, diggin' the tunes, glad you bumped it -
Now that I've not only seen what S1V3 offers but actually gone ahead and upgraded, I can finally say that I'm ditching Cubase and going all-in. PreSonus know what they're doing, they've made some amazing changes, added new features, and (most importantly) maintained the approachability and stability and workflow this DAW is known (and loved) for. I'm super-psyched and I'm just sharing the news here in case someone else is looking to switch, or looking for their first DAW. I'm now something of an S1 evangelist/fanboy, and while I still respect & love 'em all, S1 is my new best friend, and I look forward to a long relationship with it.

OCR01250 - Secret of Mana "Tidal Sequence"
djpretzel replied to djpretzel's topic in ReMix Reviews & Comments
Thanks, appreciated. Of my older stuff, I feel like this one certainly holds up better than others -
Once we move forward with our plans to integrate the workshop with the overall site database, the concept of "rejections" won't carry quite as much weight... mixes accepted by the judges panel or direct-posted will be "featured" mixes, but everything else in the workshop (WIP, finished, submitted) will show up on the main listings, etc. In other words, there will no longer be a need for a separate site that accepts everything (which is basically YouTube/SoundCloud anyways, except those will always be bigger), nor will there be a need for a separate site to host rejections. Will people still insist there's a need for those types of sites after we make this change? I guess we'll see...

Just a quick note that we've added Studio One & Bitwig Studio as additional options in the "Sequencers & DAWs" section of your member profiles. More custom fields to follow - new software is much better at managing them!

Really nice stuff, agreed.
