  1. I actually agree with Dan on a lot of issues here. There's quite a lot of subtle ornamentation going on here. I have no issues with the performance. We can't expect rachmaninov or chops like horowitz - it's just not very realistic to expect even with our piano standards (yes I'm exaggerating slightly). Here we go again with Larry's piano hiss comments. He must not listen to much classical piano recordings. Don't expect ultra pristine studio quality recordings bro - plus I think something's wrong with larry's monitoring equipment with over treble wonkiness. As far as the arrangement changes, to some degree I agree with dan. I like the changes done here, I think it's more interesting than the original, actually but... I am tempted to yes, but I'd like to hear this cleaned up a little more, with some more expansion in the composition (it's still a little too close and straightforward for my taste). Production could be better, but this is fine enough. Work more on the arrangement, I'd like to see a little more expansion here and there with a little less subtlety. Please resubmit. NO
  2. String tremolos are awesome, BUT when you have it playing like this for so long, they just get so repetitive and bland. I think you should instead use a Violin I section that plays sustains, then Violin II can have these tremelo sections, and use expression controlls to make the tremelos come in and out, but the way this just goes on and on and on and on, it just gets tedious to listen to. For me the main issue of the mix is, the arrangement feels incomplete. The ending suddenly came and the orchestra faded abruptly into some wierd (I'm guessing in-game) sound effects. It just comes off kind of cheesy, abrupt and underdeveloped. Some nice orchestration ideas though, I'm a sucker for chromatic percussion and you use it really nicely here. Good use of stereo field space. One suggestion is to put a bit more reverb, the ending of the string tremelo and brass sustains could use a little more decay so they aren't as abrupt on the note to note movements. Nice ideas, but this needs a lot of conceptual polish. Keep at it, you show promise. NO though.
  3. Ok, this is tricky. I listened to the source material and recognized this instantly. I have no problems with the arrangement liberalness, it's really not that liberal in my view. I mean, Wingless, Israfel, Zyko and I have been known to really change things around much more significantly than this. To me this is a valid arrangement, I can hear it easy enough. BUT, I can't help but agree with Larry on this one. Some parts of this are extremely cluttered, due to the enormous reverb tail/delays. It's really slightly too much, it makes things muddy and makes things gel too much. There is nothing wrong with that, lots of electronica like trance do this, but it's all about context. For me, in this context it just doesn't work. Synths and synth designs are pretty generic to me, there are some nice bits here and there, like the choir pads and the synths are a least thick. But I think it needs some more polish on the production side of things. More EQ to separate things a bit, less reverb/delays. The drums/perc rub me the wrong way, everything sounds thin you got the kick and a lot of high frequency stuff going on - is there a high pass filter on this? I wish there was some more meat in the middle frequencies, the mix seems to be dominated by low and high frequencies. I'll say this though, the ending sections were nice, with some good string writing. This grows on you, but at this point, I think it needs some more work in the execution and production department. While the arrangement is pretty good, I'm not prepared to say it overcomes the other concerns. NO
  4. This doesn't sound at all like Palpable quality to me, I feel this is a bit of a step back of what we've heard from him (and that was like well over a year ago!), and certainly overall I don't think it meets the bar. I do and can agree with some of the Yes votes, they make good points, but for me this is a decent arrangement with a lot of gimmicky traits (reminds me of a lot of mixes from 2-3 yrs ago). To me it just comes off as a cute/fun token mix with lots of gimmicks. Decent all around but nothing really that stands out for me in arrangement, execution, or production. Sure this is a fun listen the first time, but I can't really envision this meeting today's bar. Needs more work and polish. NO
  5. Can someone explain to me how extremely minor changes and what zircon dubbed "REALLY REALLY weak as a resubmit" or analoq's "this version isn't much different aside from some iffy panning." How does this fit with the standards we've required of requesting more than a minor evolution, not to mention this is grossly long after 6, 7 months since! So if this were 9, 12, 14 whatever months later, would the vote remain the same? Don't we expect more? The standards have not changed at all more than half a year later? Considering the standards issues, close vote and very divided opinion, I'd like DJP to weigh in on this mix. If he thinks its a yes, at least it's another vote in your hats.
  6. Why does this remind me of Mortal Kombat's movie score, but more chill and with not as sharp a production value. I actually rather enjoyed this but I have to disagree with my good friend Harmony, the bass on my monitoring systems sounded nice. I actually liked the power behind it, but at the same time it didn't suck the life out of the mix. Gotta NO this though, it needs more harmonic, melodic, structural, etc. expansion so that the arrangement is more evolved. Sorry bro, keep working at it. I hope to hear from you soon either with new material or a resubmission.
  7. I'll borrow Mr. Baranowsky's brevity. Production and samples are above average (I don't have a problem with em) though I feel a bit more reverb, eq tweaking and light compression would make the production much better, still passable for me though - this isn't the case like his first submission where the samples and production were ghastly. This is fine. But the highlight here is the arrangement and it's is really interesting and quality stuff throughout. Though I'll agree with Mr. Smelly Oji, that some parts were cheesy. Still, way beyond passable. Good work. YES
  8. Lots of electro-new age mixes lately. We have another one in the panel waiting to be posted. I was meaning to vote on this, but I forgot. I think the keyword of the day here is slick. While I'm personally uncomfortable with the use of loops, thankfully the rest of the mix and the supporting elements are fantastic. The famous enigma loop is still pretty damn sweet though. I really like the texture of the mix, and the instrumentation is just wonderful. Production is superlative, everything just clicks and sits well in the mix. Tite.
  9. Still holds true for Dan's stuff now. DP worthy. Nice work, Dan. YE You're a fake binnie. You suck. YE
  10. It has been a while, if memory serves, it was 2 years ago since VHD submitted to OCR. He used to have a reputation 2-3 years ago for being one of the best orchestrators in the community and it's pretty evident here. Arrangement of the several themes are interwoven extremely well. Impressive in that aspect. My favorite part of this though is the interplay between all the different instrumentation. This is textbook orchestratal, and done very well at that. Great sequencing of chromatic percussion. I love all the little subtle performances that really breathe live into this. Production is amazing, but what impresses me is, I don't think I've ever heard an orchestral mix in this community that use reverb to create such a great soundstage as this mix does. The front to back placement in the stage is amazing. Very authentic. Good arrangement, great concept and execution and toughtful production. Masterful work. Direct post material. YES
  11. In a word, Awesome. A number of us old-schoolers (zyko and I at least) remember this gem from the Vgmix 1 days. Sure it's 3 years old, but man has it aged gracefully. The arrangement is still kick ass and the instrumentation rocks. Typical Israfel 2002 era - cool orchestral hybrid with ethnic percussion and DnB flava. Compositionally, excellent as well, though I still favor the other twin, Lesser Kerubic. My only gripes here that hasn't aged as well is the string short bows, when exposed they don't sound as good, but what do you expect with technology of that period? Sweet brass lines per usual Israfel stuff, but I guess that's to be expected of a trombone player. Production values in all are still of high caliber. I have no qualms passing this, it's still comparable if not better than a lot of recent stuff posted and way above the bar in my book. Easy Yes for me.
  12. Greater Alchemic Patchwork (Final Fantasy VI) - This is basically a sequel to Lesser Kerubic Patchwork written shortly after the first one was completed. Being a sequel, there are quite a few similarities to Lesser Kerubic- I won't bother to list them all but suffice it to say, the formal structures are quite similar and you have a funky little brass bassline in both pieces (also, notice that both mixes are about the same length; one of the many stupid little details I put in my music that no one ever catches). So anyway, this is just a light-hearted take on the veldt theme that I hope you enjoy. URL: Israfel -------------------------------------------
  13. With your vote, my dear, nothing and no one else matters! PS. Everyone else feel free to vote for me regardless. For justice!
  14. People seem to be taking this vote as a vote for an all around cool judge rather than the intent of the poll. I know several judges got votes just for that reason, especially the ones with 0 votes. Anyway, larry does another lame poll again. I'm sure Paige will vote for me though, she has better taste than larry. Paige 4 Judge.
  15. Fair enough. I guess on some monitoring systems (headphones, speakers, monitors, etc) this might be portrayed in a different manner. I have re-eq'd, changed my deesser settings a bit and have done some volume automation on the specific T and S parts to try and balance things out a bit more. New version sent to djp...
  16. Without rewire compatibility there wouldn't be a way to link them, if that's what you're asking. But if you mean using them both at the same time, that should not be a problem depending on what soundcard you have. What most reason users do is import the audio file in reason via NNXT (treat it as a sample) and just hold the note in the reason piano roll for however long the audio file is. It's not the most graceful solution, but it does work quite well. Edit: I'm using Reason 2.5. I'm not sure how Reason 3 changes any of my above statements, if any.
  17. Vote is resumed. I added some new stuff and did some mix tweaking and remastered it. We're happy with the final result, hope you guys enjoy.
  18. Add him too! The high court has accepted the petition. Harvey from DoubleDare has been included.
  19. The actual limit is 6MB (6,291,456 bytes)as can be found at http://www.ocremix.org/about/?artid=4. This mix is 6,219,776 bytes. No problems there.
  20. Since larry continues to feign ignorance and continues his pattern of contempt, the high court has ruled that the People's Court Judge Marilyn Milian and her sidekick Harvey will enter the voting fray.
  21. Do not oppose the ruling of the High Court, of which I am the most eminent representative. You, Mr. Oji are in contempt! Bailiff Byrd in da house.
  22. analoq hit the nail on the head, "this version isn't much different." Regardless, I think 7 months have passed and standards have gone up at the very least slightly. I can not in good conscience keep my old vote of borderline yes. This simply has not evolved too much for that to happen. While I still like the ideas represented in this mix, I feel like before, but to a greater degree with the passage of time, this just sounds flatter, less dynamic and even sparser. Production is average. There's not much going on here to make the samples sound better than they are, and they are average. This could be improved on with more clever and sophisticated production, mixing and mastering techniques. I have no problem with the retro sounds. But better use of reverb, delays and eqing will help this go a long way. Also consider layering your snare with other snares. The one here is really weaksauce. It's a fun listen as it was before, but I can't find too many things evolved from the previous version conceptually and in execution or enough here for me to give it a yes. Needs more work in the arrangement, execution and production for me to yes with this much time that has passed. It sounds like you spent an hour or less tweaking this for resubmission. Please don't get discouraged, keep at it, because I genuinely want to hear more from you as a resub or new material. But this is a NO as it stands.
  23. Roeteka Fallthrough Apparently this got lost, he sent it in around first week of june. --------------------------------------- RoeT says: Heydehoo gots a Pokémon mix (OH NOES!) It's a chillout mix, really relaxing and calm of the Pokémon Centre song. It started just with the melody playing around on the guitar, and then it fit great with some countered piano melodies. The congas were LordMaestro's idea (and the rhythm of them) so Kudos to you bud! I love me some ocean drum <3 Anyways, that's it here's the link: Thanks
  24. By order of the highest court in the land, Liontamer's judgetacularness has been thrown out. The high court cited mr. oji's several underhanded methods that include accepting bribes, flip-flopping and groove bias. He is clearly in contempt! Replacing Liontamer is Judge Judy's sidekick, Bailiff Byrd.
  25. Two polar opposites, Judge Judy is "decisive" in contrast Liontamer is the "flip-flop" judge. Judge Judy wins!
