OCR01211 - *YES* Star Ocean: Blue Sphere 'Killer Dokko'
GrayLightning replied to djpretzel's topic in Judges Decisions
This isn't a mere cover. Although Snappleman's arrangements tend to be on the more conservative side than we would like at OCR, this one is definitely passable. The original is also only about a minute long. He did a good job expanding the material without making it repetitive. Snapple goes for that metal sound and he pulls it off quite authentically here, especially with the drum sequencing *which is excellent by the way*. Nice mixing, mastering, although I prefer the older version where the synth line wasn't so shrill. Still this is easily a Yes from me. -
REASON - Please Direct Reason questions here
GrayLightning replied to Devvyn's topic in Music Composition & Production
You can't do tempo automation in reason. That's the biggest knock on reason. If you want to do it, you'll have to use it with another sequencer via rewire. -
I don't know what more can be said when both judges have nailed the main problem of this mix. This needs more development. I would also suggest more attention be paid to panning. Neat concept and I like the ambient nature, but this needs more work. Consider expanding this another minute or two. Borderline NO
-
Danny B has stated my exact feelings on the mix. I'm very torn, but due to the repetive and incomplete nature of the mix, my vote is slanted into the borderline no. More expansion and polish would get this a Yes from me. No for now.

Too repetitive, too much reliance on sound fx like the rain. Typical boom tss piece. Samples are average, but the production is fairly nice. What this really lacks is more compositional depth. I really did enjoy your sweep pad usage though. Beyond that, this is too shallow. This isn't bad, but much more could be done with this nice framework. A little more work here and there and this could go a long way. As it is, it just doesn't have enough positive or unique qualities to pass. NO

OCR01205 - *YES* Shenmue 'Dreaming While I Wake'
GrayLightning replied to djpretzel's topic in Judges Decisions
There's some instances of clipping/audio glitches like at 1:02, 1:38. Not too annoying I suppose. Overall, the mixer did a good job with the arrangement. I had no trouble recognizing the mix. The vocals start out very ify, but soon settle in nicely. Great effects processing, I love the vocoding and the ambient washes. This actually reminds me of Days go By by Dirty Vegas. Definitely worthy of a YES. -
OCR01199 - Final Fantasy IV "Phoenix Symphonic"
GrayLightning replied to djpretzel's topic in ReMix Reviews & Comments
The two are the Donkey Kong Country project mix which you might have heard on the site projects forum and the other is a Shining Force mix. Stay tuned. -
Not bad at all, but this is fairly generic electronica. There's nothing too original here, it sounds like the same mixes we've heard over and over again. Decent work, but try adding more complexity to the composition, synth programming and production. This is a decent first submission. You show potential so please keep working at it. NO

OCR01199 - Final Fantasy IV "Phoenix Symphonic"
GrayLightning replied to djpretzel's topic in ReMix Reviews & Comments
This is a fairly liberal arrangement of the airship theme. The tempo and rhythm have been greatly altered. The structure and form has been changed around also. The melody though is actually about 80 something % the same as the original. The mix benefits from repeated listens, but I agree that someone looking for something closer to the original might want more. Thanks for the comments everyone. I have two of my best submissions coming to OC in the near future. -
OCR01203 - *YES* Adventure Island 'Tribal Warfare'
GrayLightning replied to djpretzel's topic in Judges Decisions
The piece has a nice flow too. The transitions are also very thoughtful. Love that part at 1:45. Classic NES. This is all very well done, but my slight complaint is I wish the melody was more prominent. At times it doesn't feel like there's much of a melody. This is only forgiveable because you pull off the piece as a whole quite well. Interesting. Yes -
*NO* Mega Man 'Pizzaman 2.0' *FT* *RESUB*
GrayLightning replied to GrayLightning's topic in Judges Decisions
I am torn. There's quite a lot of great ideas and arrangement here, and then there's some big issues here. Without the great drumwork, it's very sparse. You have this bass then you have a pad playing very high and a melody up top also. There's a big gap in between. How about adding some denser pads in between? If you want to keep these same ideas, I think you could get rid of a minute or two and focus on the best parts of the mix. Production, mixing and mastering could be better as well. Some of the sounds are a bit plain. This needs more effects processing. If all else fails, add a little more reverb. Please fix it up and resubmit, this has potential. No -
*NO* Mega Man X 'The Storm at the Eagles Nest'
GrayLightning replied to djpretzel's topic in Judges Decisions
I relistened to the mix with fresh ears today and with more clarity my vote was too hasty. Ultimately, this is still a very cool mix, and the production problems don't really bother me too much. As before, I think the reverb works well for this mix, but the main issue here for me is I would recommend some more arrangement. Along with the performance and production problems, this is enough to shift my vote to a borderline NO. I still like the mix quite a bit, but it can be improved on with more polish. Please resubmit! -
This is a semiliberal cover of the theme and not really a passable arrangement by OCR standards. I suggest you work on more arrangement. Move sections around, change the form, and add more compositionally. Also this breaks our encoding limit. Please keep submissions at 192kbps max, this is way above at 320 kbps. Fairly decent first effort. Now work on incorporating your own style into an arrangement. No Override

Wingless you must have missed the recent judge discussion. We decided not to use Yes Override. I agree with wingless this mix. Very cool and unique work. This is made tricky by the short length, but it ultimately works for me. Surprising mix. We don't get these kinds of good mixes too often. Edit: Vote change -
*NO* Street Fighter 2 'Select Your Fighter and Fight'
GrayLightning replied to djpretzel's topic in Judges Decisions
Not bad, but this is incomplete and too short in my opinion. Production and samples are average. This needs more work both in composition and execution to go beyond the bounds of cookie cutter. The ending also just cuts off. Try for something more than just stopping. ^_~ Decent first submission, but unfortunately not passable. Better luck next time. Keep at it. No -
Fun, however the idea of Wingless' granny panties aren't. I agree with wingless on this one. This is like the coucou mix, just pure fun. This has the intangibles of an enjoyable mix, even though the production isn't up to par with our normal standards. Nice. Edit: This is a fun mix, but upon closer inspection I have to agree with the other judges and I think there should be more arrangement here to pass. Please resubmit. No

*NO* Metroid Zero Mission 'Ridley's End'
GrayLightning replied to djpretzel's topic in Judges Decisions
Minimalistic piece that doesn't work. There's no atmosphere, no unique instrumentation and on top of this, it's very incomplete sounding. This is very short for an atmospheric piece. This needs more compositional work, expansion and instrumentation. If you want to keep this style, how about more layers behind the guitar, such as pads? I do like the intro and the concept. This just needs better execution and production. NO -
This doesn't work for me. It's a bit of a mess conceptually and in execution. I don't think the lead and bass sound too well together. I think this mix would have worked better if it was more atmospheric, instead of half and half. Production values are quite lacking as well. Not a bad mix at all, this is fairly average. A lot more could be done here. Hope to hear more from you in the future. NO

*NO* Castlevania 2 'Piano Arrangement'
GrayLightning replied to djpretzel's topic in Judges Decisions
Not bad at all. I have to agree with analoq on this one. This is very mechanical sounding. Piano or solo instrumental mixes are perhaps the hardest to get right and do get the harshest criticism you'll find, for good reason. When the instrument is this exposed it's much easier to pick on it. I think if you included other elements, such as pads or strings, etc. that this could be a more interesting mix. Good concept, now you just have to get the performance down. No -
There are a few problems as pointed out by analoq, and also more changes at the end would have been good additions. There are no huge negatives for me. It is passable in my book. Enjoyable atmospheric and chill work. YES

*NO* Chrono Trigger 'Holiday at the Ocean Palace'
GrayLightning replied to djpretzel's topic in Judges Decisions
I actually like this, but the ridiculous amount of reverb is way too much. There's a difference between making a large soundscape and drowning something in it. Slightly more highs and lows on this would make this much better as well, as pointed out by darke. There's a lot of potential here that you could expand on and lengthen. Borderline No -
OCR01191 - Shinobi "Dark Tortoise"
GrayLightning replied to djpretzel's topic in ReMix Reviews & Comments
Love the pads and bell synths. Some of the pads here remind me of the Dune arrangement album. Very nice. -
OCR01201 - *YES* Final Fantasy 7 'Truth in Forgiveness Await'
GrayLightning replied to djpretzel's topic in Judges Decisions
This mix sounds a lot like Dale North or Kaijin. This mix has so much emotion that whatever production flaws this mix has is secondary. Great arrangement and inspirational work. YES -
OCR01221 - *YES* Mega Man 3 'Intro Jazz'
GrayLightning replied to djpretzel's topic in Judges Decisions
I'm surprised Protricity was the first to comment on the clipping. It's quite obvious and disturbing, early on in the mix. This is tricky. There's a bunch of production flaws here, like the recording quality, everything sounds far off. But the arrangement, concept and execution can't really be denied. Very unique and I too love the pan flutes. Dig the hand percussion also. Despite a lot of flaws, this is still great work, YES. -
OCR01174 - Final Fantasy "AfterLife"
GrayLightning replied to djpretzel's topic in ReMix Reviews & Comments
Could Uematsu have lifted some ideas from a familiar classical piece? The theme sounds like it's from another piece also, but I can't quite put my finger on it.
