OCR01099 - *YES* Chrono Trigger 'Tears for a Girl'
GrayLightning replied to GrayLightning's topic in Judges Decisions
Update After a lengthy discussion with vigilante, it was clear that I could do some things to make this more presentable. My apologies for the trouble. I agree with some of vigilante's criticisms. I've had two mixes now where a lot of people don't seem to like it when I use reason's flute for some reason. I've changed the flute sample and moved the orchestra behind the synth and guitars with a wetter reverb than before. I think this fixes some of vigilante's issues with the string attack and decay problems also. Fixed and added some other stuff. Anyway, please download the new version if possible at the same link. My apologies for my error. -
djp:could you remove the url in my remixer profile since mp3.com is gone. thanks! omg...Another new year, so it's time for a new Schala mix. Freemind sent this in to djp around 8 months ago, since nothing has happened since then I asked Freemind if he'd be interested in a collaboration where I would remake/add stuff to this mix. He sent me the reason file and I went to work to do some touch ups, adding new instrumentation, rerecording/remixing, reproducing it. You already know my feelings on this, so I'll leave it only at, really great mix shariq. Keep it up. ^^ -
OCR01098 - *YES* Doom 'demonik elektronik'
GrayLightning replied to analoq's topic in Judges Decisions
Fitting title. The mood with instrument selection and usage makes this very menacing, in a good way. I would say the first half sort of drags on a bit, but the interesting effects processing throughout this is enough to keep things interesting until the stronger sections near the end. The last sections of the mix are definitely this mix's highlight. Excellent production values, as we've come to expect from analoq. YES -
This is pretty nice, but like a lot of the mixes we get this is so underdeveloped and incomplete. The beginning solo violin feels a bit pointless. It's just there doing something that sounds like it has no direction. Fairly decent orchestration, but it's hard to judge given the incomplete feeling of this. This needs more instrumental components to make any kind of ruling on this. This is also far too short a mix that doesn't really express where you're going with this. A fine mix that sounds like a beginning to something untapped. This needs more work so, no. NO

OCR01102 - *YES* Marble Madness 'Marble Dancefloor'
GrayLightning replied to djpretzel's topic in Judges Decisions
This is indeed very catchy and has a fun groove. However, I don't think there's enough here. At times it feels a little too repetitive, underdeveloped and empty. The drums are extremely strong and overpower everything else. But that's a personal production method I guess. It gets progressively better near the end, but ultimately I don't think it has enough. Beyond the great melody I'm not sure what else is there. The ending is fairly weak in the way it ends. A longer fade out would have worked better than this kind of abrupt fade out. Palpable's Life Force mix is a much stronger showing so I was expecting more here. I think i'm going to have to go against the grain here. This isn't quite ready yet. Somewhat borderline given the catchiness of this, but NO -
OCR01093 - *YES* Breath of Fire 'His First Good Deed'
GrayLightning replied to djpretzel's topic in Judges Decisions
Yes, some parts of this definitely sound less than stellar, but most of it is indicative of a mixer who clearly knows how to execute a vision. This is a wonderful example of what I'd like to see more in orchestrations - far from cookie-cutter approach. I do like the drums and percussion throughout. Ethnic percussion when used this well always is a bonus for me. I do agree with protricity about the sound effects. I don't really care for them in an orchestral setting. Weak ending though. Great attention to detail, impressive instrumentation depth and usage. Good work. YES -
This is very catchy and shows promise. But like many mixes that come to us, the execution and production here is very lacking. For one, everything sounds centered and mono. Use panning to spread out the instruments! I really like the concept of this and the pure enjoyability of the tune. This needs more work, this really does sound like a work in progress. Work on adding more elements to the mix. It's a simple beginning with a lot of promise. The ending is also a let down. I hope you work on this more. NO

*NO* Mega Man 2 'Time 4 Sum Bubble Bursting'
GrayLightning replied to djpretzel's topic in Judges Decisions
This is a mixed bag. The intro was quite good. I love long drawn out intros. However after that, it went downhill. Once it got to the fast section, the transition to that was quite disjointed. It almost felt like it was two different songs being blended together. Once in the fast sections, from halfway until the end, the speed up is very unnatural. It feels like it was sped up too much. It feels very awkward. Very nice ideas and instrumentation here, especially in the intro. However after the intro it simply went downhill in execution. Ending is decent. There's also a loud, annoying click/pop sound at the end (4:06). I hope to hear more from you in the future as you certainly have talent, now go and work on polishing it up. I don't think this will cut it though, so NO -
*NO* Resident Evil 2 'No Time for Tears'
GrayLightning replied to djpretzel's topic in Judges Decisions
I'm on the other end of the spectrum. I think there's too much reverb on the piano. It's not a major detraction. The overall production and vibe of this mix is wonderful. The moody tone of the piano against the lead paints quite a dramatic scene. Percussion work throughout is both fitting and unique. It's always great to see someone not doing generic four on the floor drums with trance claps. I think the mix is slightly drawn out and does give off a hint of repetitivity. This would have been nicer if it were slightly shorter. Classy mix, so YES -
*NO* Rockman and Forte 'Coldman Sapphire'
GrayLightning replied to djpretzel's topic in Judges Decisions
Must everyone do these generic electronica/dance drums? ^_~ The rest is definitely good enough for a post. I don't think this is quite as technically savy as what we've been seeing lately in the electronica department, however this has a factor of enjoyability that certainly puts the mix over the line for me. Considering the length of the mix, good work on keeping the mix flowing and engaging throughout. People will definitely dig this a lot. YES -
The best thing about this mix are definitely the effected drums. The rest of it doesn't really stand out in my opinion. The instrumentation, sound blending, mixing and production are decent. You did a good job expanding the theme. However, several of the new additions feel a little meandering and weak. Average mix, but as also noted by others, it feels very static as a whole. NO
-
This starts out pretty poorly. I particularly like the percussion around 20 seconds. Once the drums and guitar enter, the mix is elevated quite a bit. However this mix really feels very incomplete. It's a bit on the short side and doesn't have enough development. On top of that the ending is pretty average. This sounds like a start to something that was never completed. NO

*NO* Metroid Prime 'Twilight on Tallon'
GrayLightning replied to djpretzel's topic in Judges Decisions
I can't say this is very enjoyable as a whole. There's a lot of clipping that brings down this mix. The lead instrument and other synths are very harsh. At least, some eq work definitely needs to be done on that. The sounds are piercing. Also I think the volume levels are way too much. When you have sounds this piercing, along with the loudness, it makes for a less than pleasant listening experience. I like the mix in some respects, but better instrumentation and more work on mixing and mastering would help this to be a better product. Good luck in the future. NO -
*NO* Final Fantasy 4 'Golbez, Clad in Death'
GrayLightning replied to djpretzel's topic in Judges Decisions
Great for a first mix. However, this has a ways to go. This is quite a grand display of several ideas being incorporated into one mix, but the execution falls here to the point where I think it loses several qualities present in an enjoyable mix. I think for one, the mixing and composition of the many instruments here leads to a very cluttered and chaotic sounding mix. Work with eq, panning separation to help give the instruments more definition. Compositionally, at times I think you have too many things going on here. At 2:40, the multipanned cymbals shifting all over the place are a little disorienting. I do like the ending piano sections. Keep working at it, you show potential. This doesn't work in my opinion so NO -
This is the kind of music we all grew up on. This sounds like late 80s game music. Very enjoyable throughout. I think the classic sounds works especially well given the execution. The sample quality is probably the weakest part of this mix. However I don't think it's enough to detract the mix. The more I listen to this the more it grows on me. I really like the instrument selection also. Fun and enjoyable overall. Edit:

*NO* Donkey Kong Country 'Waves of Peril'
GrayLightning replied to djpretzel's topic in Judges Decisions
First impression is really great sounds and mood throughout. Great pads and strings. Second impression is it is a very conservative mix. I think more arrangement needs to be done. Very enjoyable mix, but needs more arrangement... Sadly, NO for now -
I am in agreement with the others. There's really nothing more to add that the others have not said. This is a really happy tune and that makes it pretty enjoyable. But there are some parts where it isn't what it could be. Andy's newer mixes are much more interesting as he is getting better and better with each mix, especially the ones with claire. This however is too mechanical and in all feels a little unfulfilled. Good luck in your future mixes. NO

Samples aren't great, but definitely the problem here is how they're used. Some nice concepts here, like the soloish drum sections. But really I'm not sure if this mix really has a direction. It just seems to repeat the same aimless direction over and over. I'm still not sure what I just heard. I hope you spend some more time in the future working on a mix's structure as you have displayed here some cool ideas. But without support or direction, this mix just feels very lacking. NO -
Yeah the whole mix is a bit muddy. More attention needs to be paid in the mixing and mastering department. A few treble boosts would certainly give this mix more sparkle. The lead is really thin. It also very lost in the mix. Also the entire mix is very dry as noted by vigilante. A little reverb would help this. More expansion and arrangement needs to be done as this sounds like a semi-liberal cover. I like the mix a little, but that could be because you chose to mix something with a great melody. I also agree this feels a little too fast a mix. Slow it down a bit, right now it feels a little strange. This could be something special if more work and polishing were put into this mix, but as is, it's only decent and nothing really stands out. NO
-
I am really digging the style and mood of this. Flowing piano that feels like an endlessly drifting sound into some dark abyss. It's very moody, everything is just very transportational. I'm not crazy about the distortion sections, they break up the mood a little bit. But not enough to be enough of a detraction. I like all the instrument choices here as well, except the ones noted above. Fairly weak ending though. Nice textures, and good understanding of layering and atmosphere. I particularly like the string pads that appear that carries the piece to the end. I wish there were more layers and stuff going on behind with the pads. I would have liked a little more expansion on some of the concepts here, I'm borderline a bit, but certainly enjoyable enough for a YES Edit: typo

I want to love this mix. Yes, the sparse vibe of this works extremely well. Nice pads and composition for the section. It's my favorite part as it seems to fit perfectly with the mood you're trying to make. This kind of mix does beg for a longer and more drawn out work. Right now it just feels a bit lacking. For me the main turn off in the mix is the drum/percussion work. It does get very repetitive and it wasn't very daring to begin with. There's a lot of potential here. I really like so much of this mix. Great mood, nice pads and atmosphere. But overall it needs more expansion, development and structure. Also I think one really should go back to the drawing board with the drum/perc sections. I hope to hear more from you in the future, with more attention paid to the details. NO
-
This is fun. I remember hearing this a while back and that was my first impression. My main beef with this mix as I commented before and still remains after hearing this again is its length. By the time I got into this, it was over. There aren't enough pros in this mix to let this through. As coma suggested, more work needs to be paid in the production and mixing department. My other issue is the ending. It is like you recorded sound fx from Final Fantasy VI? and stuck it in there for no reason. Nice, fun mix overall, but there's not enough in here to make it really stand out. NO
