  1. I'm just wondering how everyone goes about making music relative to how they use to in the past. I now play covers by ear so I actually layer track by track, where as I use to work on songs section by section for example, at least more so than I do now. Also the last few songs I've made, I wrote in one or two sittings (I'm not too happy about that because they were in 6-12 hour sittings). I'm also using templates, cross-fading samples, and blending samples more. While my project is more efferent, I'm looking for ways others have improved their efficiency.

  2. For those of you who manage to successfully use EWQL, do you have any go to sample sets? Me personally I end up using the running/flowing 10 cello or viola instruments when I want a sustained sound for example.

I never actually documented which ones I use the most but I'll run through my work and take a look. But for you all, what combinations do you find best? What do you layer instances with (if you do layer)? I know these are broad questions. but I'm just wondering how you use this library.

  3. I thought that before I bought it and used it. I'd say that Action Strings is more suited for creating interesting string rhythms rather than an interesting melodic line. I use the Solo String patch in the factory library to do that.

I'm definitely getting that vibe, and it's something I didn't want to write off immediately so I've been watching other people work around with it.

  4. Hi friend, I'm an amateur composer who just upgraded to EWQL Platinum. I'm happy, but I totally acknowledge your risks are very warranted. Everything's gone smoothly and the one time I did have a problem (last week) I got a reply in a day after reporting the case to ew through their online case system. I solved in on my own. Most installation errors actually can be handled through online research. I think I actually had one when I first got gold. Worse comes to worse though you can literally rip the samples and folders off the disk and install the version of play that's on the website. The only time you run into problems is if the disk if physically damaged or something. Then the only way you can fix that is if you deal with them, which from what I can tell is one of those things that's up in the air. I have no idea if I can tell if my experience is the norm or completely irregular or in between...

Sample player is a software that plays samples, samples being recordings of instruments that are then mapped to midi keys/notes so that you can "play" the instrument. Kontakt is a very versatile player. Where as Play (EWQL's player) only plays 1st party (EWQL's own expensive sample libraries) Kontakt is built off of 3rd party support. Tons of freebies allover the internet, and libraries of different price ranges so you're only obligated to shell out as much as you want. Bonus fact, EWQL developed symphonic choirs and orchestra for Kontakt, they only fairly recently switched to their own sampler for piracy reasons (like in 09). I have Kontakt too, in fact I started with Komplete (Native Instrument's huge library/software bundle). There are tons of orchestra libraries that have been developed for Kontakt and some aren't bad. I will say the cool thing about east west is that it is consolidated material of the same quality in one place, so that makes it feel "convenient" to buy from them.

For the keyboard I've gone from basic midi keyboard (a casio) to Oxygen (I wanna say 61) to M audio (45?) The major functions you need for orchestration are velocity sensitivity (which some midi out keyboards like my casio don't have, they also add midi data from their hardware banks), modulation (a mod wheel), and maybe pitch bend. You don't really need to worry about advance functions (I've not used them yet and I've been doing it for 5 years almost). Any other miidi functions can be added to your work in your DAW.

Feel free to ask me more questions, I know how you must feel and I would love to talk and help.

  5. So I upgraded from gold because there was a really nice sell and it was my b-day. I copied the sample folders into the existing ewql orchestra library, but while play now reads the samples, I am unable to load mic positions. Is this a problem with the way the directory is set up or do I have to reinstall? Also I cant change the bit depth from 16 to 24, which presumably is also a directory issue? Anyone have problems with this library?

  6. It took me a while to fully realize but I'm simply into music cause I'm interested in the core building blocks. Harmony, rhythm and timbre. I like certain genres cause I think they excel in some of these aspects.

That expalins everything. That honestly gives me a better reason for understanding my prefrences as well. I don't know why I didn't think of that.

I like music with a good rhythm, music with emotive and challenging performances, music with alot of energy... I'm very big on harmonies and how they compliment each other in music. I'm very big on vocal harmonies as well, maybe because of the unique textural quality of the human voice. Um... I like music thats BIG which is where my love of reverb comes from... so many qualities to why I like specific music, but not music as a whole.

    YES!!

Though I have to admit my love of the human voice was "aquired." I noticed at first my like of music (or my ability to describe it) was limited to timberal qualities, I could only name a limited number of instruments I thought I "liked" but the truth is that in any circumstance any instrument can be likeable. As I expanded my taste and even my composition comfortzone I started to have more "favorite instruments" until I realized it wasn't per se qualities inhernt to one specific instrument.

Because I'm human and music is a functional result of our biology.

That's debatable. In part (I would say) because of semantics, but also just evolutionarily. There are evolutionary biologists and psychologists who argue music was an accident. It's possible, some of them say, that things like rhythm have some biological basis, but that music itself was happened stance or just learned behavior. I'm more inclined to agree with you, but I'm just saying is all...

On that note (teehee), have any of you read "This is your brain on music" by Daniel Levitin? As a musican, lover of knowledge, and listener of music that book was awesome on multiple levels.

  7. I'm kind of curious. Why do you all like music? And to make such a broad question smaller, what kind of sound and/or patterns do you like to hear in your music? And finally, do you compose the type of music you with the qualities like to hear?

For me I love low and midrange tones harmonizing, so I like good counterpoints written in the octave ranges I like most. Really vague I know, but Im having trouble deconstructing and describing the more complex aspects of what I like in a sound.

  8. thanks for all the feedback, really. here are two things i'm looking for in new libraries:

    less than 1k price tag

easy to use player(won't have to constantly email tech support)

    so bottom line:

something similar to EWQL CCC WITHOUT crappy tech support.

here's what pisses me off about EWQL:

i'm here to make music, not spend 12 hours a day tweaking the internal functions of my PC.

tell me if there's a way I can have what I mentioned above not happen(I have windows 8 btw)

I read the system requirements and it seems like it would work but I dunno.

I've made costly mistakes before. I just don't want EWQL CCC to be one of 'em

EWQL has been plug and play for me, and I'm not the most musically minded nor conputer savvy person... I was just learning what a DAW was as I began using it. As far as tech support, honestly I imagine that's a problem you'd have with a lot of companies. This is a very niche market selling high end products often to studios who are willing to put a lot of money down. Now mind you, there's different degrees of unhepfulness and I'm sure EW is on the higher end of that spectrum.

I've had SO gold for literally a year to the day and these are my only two regrets. Default wetness prevents mixing the instruments well with anything other than other EW products. However someone in the originals board told me they cut the tail releases on their instruments and got a "shorted" less wet sound. So there's some (perhaps crude) workaround. Conversely buy platinum I believe the "close mic" samples are the best solution to the issue.

The other problem is the ilok. If it gets damaged it will prevent you from playing and you have to deal with PACE to work it out. It only set me back 4 days but if you have deadlines or something it might be a thing to care about.

edit: Bonus problem... you need ram, a good amount. I upgraded to 8 on my laptop and can run about 16-20 instruments ok-ish. If I start adding effects then it laggs (but still fuctions)

If you or anyone you know is a student look into EWs educational discounts. The cost of all items are literally halved. Also they have about 6-7 sells per year. I got Gold and Chiors for $500 last August and I now intend to use the educational discount to buy more stuff from them.

    Garritan kinda sucks.

EWQL can be good, not so much if you don't want the wet concert hall sound. Also, iLok, inefficient sample player, possibly shitty customer service. Definitely some serious issues to weigh. The big point in this one's favor is the concert hall ambiance, if that is important to you.

Has anyone used the close mics in platinum? Does that get around the wetness...?

also, in the kontakt line of things which is more bang for your buck? Komplete 9 or Komplete 9 ultimate?

and just for kicks n giggles, which composing software do y'all like best? Finale or Sibelius(I love Sibelius myself lol)

Kontakt is the sampler that has the acoustic samples. The thing per se about NI isn't the default samples that NI packaged with komplete (they're not bad but...) Other 3rd party developers have vsts that you otherwise wouldn't have access too without kontakt, even EWQLSO started out making their product for the kontakt engine. And there are some good 3rd party orchestral stuff you can find for kontakt.

This is the thing I realize though. Apparently a lot of developers for orchestral stuff on kontakt sell by section and I'm realizing why. The quality seems to be "better" when you buy packages that focus on one particular instrument or section. Unfortunately doing things that way can eaially be a 1100+ set back. I'm also realizing maybe it wasn't necessary to get a higher end orchestral library. At least not until I perfectly mastered understanding every midi CC lol. I don't regret anything though.

If you have Sibelius you can actually purchase EWQL samples for the playback function. That way you get a better tone without having to invest in a DAW and all the other equipment needed to run vsts
