  1. A little update. JH Sounds is unable to continue with the project, so his track is now available. However, an option is now available. I'll take either "The Mushroom Kingdom" or the Staff Roll tracks. My goal with the end of the album is to provide a satisfying ending. Aside from that, either one of the tracks will be satisfactory.

So, one track opens, but we still have just 7 left. I'd like to see these slots filled with some amazing talent, so shoot me a PM if you're interested.

  2. Auto-tuning isn't a nod to pop culture, it's just an effect. :|

True and noted, but as an effect, it would be used to tweak the vocals that are off. I was just thinking aabout the influx of things that are uber tuned lately (autotune the news, T-Pain, ... Bieber). In that regard, since "Escape from the City" was never meant to be sung to "Endless Mine", I would think that could classify as a nod.

But, you're right, it is just an effect.

  3. Honestly, I think the autotune part shows the thought they're putting into it. They're doing their homework, finding the one obscure (read: I wouldn't have noticed it unless someone pointed it out) track that actually sounds like it was meant to go with the song. Mix that with a nod to pop culture by autotuning something that was never meant to go to that tune.

I'm ok with the music being remixes, because it's supposed to be a nostalgia trip.

    ...

I wonder what "His World (Classic Version)" would sound like. Better question: will SEGA even touch that minefield?

  4. I guess it depends on which way they run with it. One of the theories on it was just turning the old sonic games into 3d versions with the current graphics, which I personally think would work better than their attempt at turning the 3d game 2d (Sonic 4 didn't do a whole lot for me).

If nothing else, it could be a good nostalgia trip.

And like I said, probably reading into it too much.

  5. Didn't see any posts on this, so I thought I would contribute.

Realizing Sega's current track record with reviving retro Sonic, this looks like it has some potential, whatever it is they're planning.

I like how the world is a 3d version of an old Genesis world, but it's covered in dust, almost like it hasn't been touched in a while. Probably reading into it a bit much, but that's what it looked like to me.

Anyway, just thought I'd share. Thoughts, theories, etc.?

  6. Super Mario Galaxy 2 End Credits

Realizing that it does have some of those Galaxy sound effects in it, the main part of this track is the live orchestra.

What made this theme jump out to me was the increase in dynamics since Super Mario Galaxy's end credits. It just seemed deeper to me. Also, I'm pretty sure the favorite theme from the series is the "Gusty Garden Galaxy" theme from the first installment. If there was one theme people wanted to return in the sequel, that would probably be the one. But it doesn't appear in the game. Then you beat the game and sit through the credits. The music builds up and launches into the theme, almost like a little bonus reward for the fans.

THEN you get to the Special Map and hear a different arrangement of it, but that's another story.

  7. I'd have to agree with what Shariq said. Some remixes tend to go a different route entirely from the source, but this one sounds like it would belong in the game or a trailer. Keeps it close yet original.

I actually had my doubts going into the first bit. Then the "Never Forget" theme hit. I actually forgot what that track was until I heard it, and I realized it was one of my favorite cues. Slow mournful yet hopeful strings were what made it for me in the original, and you kept those pretty well intact. I heard that, and I was ready to download. :nicework: Also, I love the use of the piano. Simple yet elegant, and the fact that the original used a piano too was a good tie-in.

    Music is awesome.

  8. The Asus Eee Slate will run FL Studio, Cubase, a bunch of VSTi's and a couple of big sample libraries at the same time. I'm sure that sequencer is going to be extremely lame and won't really support any kinds of decent sounds, multiple channels, automation, and effects that are required to make anything even halfway decent sounding. I'm pretty sure the iPad still has a lot less functionality than the iPhone, for a lot more money.

I'm happy that I don't have to worry about any special super apps for the $300 laptop I bought at Wal-Mart when I can run FL Studio and a whole crapload of VST's at the same time.

I looked at the promotional video. They need to make the buttons bigger on that koushion drum machine so your cat can play it.

Just for clarification, it's a sequencer/controller, not composing software. My friend uses it with Ableton Live. It only controls the software, sounds, and such that you already have. And, I'm not sure if you read the description, but it supports up to 8 channels. Also not sure what you meant about automation, but if by that you mean looping, it does that automatically once it reaches the end of your frame or set of frames. Obviously there would be some effects you could add in your actual program, but this helps with getting the notes into your computer.

I'm also not saying that the iPad is the cure-all for everything, nor was I saying "Go get an iPad so you can get this app." I was simply letting those who already have an iPad know about a cost-effective alternative to purchasing a controller or sequencer.

And, yes, the buttons might be a little small, but that's the complaint for 99.9% of the apps out there.

  9. I thought It might be good to contribute to the community. I've got a friend who is the lead software expert for a creative group that he co-founded. They specialize in iOS apps, web design, and branding. Incidentally, he's the one who introduced me to OCReMix, but that's somewhat beside the point.

Tomorrow, March 22, the company is releasing the Koushion sequencing app for the iPad. I was able to see this while it was still in the development stages, and even then it was pretty impressive (although, being a novice at composition, I am admittedly easily impressed). Still, this has a lot of features that even some of the more upscale controllers don't have. And even if there is a controller that surpasses this one, I can almost guarantee you that it won't be able to beat the $9.99 price tag of Koushion.

So if you have an iPad, I would strongly suggest checking this out. Even if your skeptical, it's only $9.99, so I would still give it a try.

Just thought I would throw that out there for everybody.

Remember: March 22, Koushion, App Store, iPad, $9.99. :nicework:

  10. Just an update if it wasn't clear. Sir Jordanius is working on the Title Screen, and SiriusBeatz has agreed to work on his "A Plea from the Stars" mix under our project name.

That brings us to a grand total of 8 tracks remaining and a little over a month before the first deadline. If anybody is rolling off a project and wants to get on board with another one, now's a good opportunity. :<

  11. I'm not really bumping this time because I'm concerned about meeting a deadline, but something just came to my mind. Here's something that djpretzel said at the beginning of the year:

If there's one theme I'd like to personally endorse for 2011, it's ReMixing unmixed games. We all love us some Final Fantasy, and Chrono Trigger, and Sonic, and Mega Man, and Zelda, but there are tons of great games out there with beautiful & amazing soundtracks that deserve some attention. Heck, even some of those mega-franchises have games that haven't been mixed yet, and there are tons of other popular, mainstream games that don't have mixes, in addition to more obscure X68000 or MSX games.
One of my main reasons for starting this project was that (aside from it being one of my favorite games) this game hasn't been ReMixed yet. And this project isn't the only one focused on an UnMixed game. I'm not saying drop what you're doing and come help. I'm just saying don't brush it off as "just another Mario project from a noob." An UnMixed game is an UnMixed game, and it at least deserves a shot.

Ok, done with my little speach-ish thing.
