  1. Ah, there's where the SNAFU happened. Thanks Mirby!

[EDIT] By the by, I was just compiling a list with all Sonic games and which generation they come from, and came to the conclusion that a 4 or more CD project isn't so far-fetched; The Sonic CD project had four as well, with 43 tracks in all...

If we can get enough talented artists, then let's do it!

Also, I'll be sending out PMs to those who have expressed interest this week. We need to start working now if we want this to be a success.

  2. I think this could be awesome, if executed correctly. As suggested before, about three tracks per game would suffice. Also, if possible, I think it would be cool to give every era it's own disc. This would potentially mean three or four CD's, but I think that will surely tie everything together. Finding mixers for that, well, that's an entirely different matter... I'm no mixer, but I'm willing to offer any help you need :)

While I would LOVE to give each era its own disc, the issue with such a large project is logistics. The more tracks that you add to an album, the more you have to account for. 2 CD albums are already difficult and expensive to produce. 3 or 4 is a nightmare for project managers...

Then again, this is Sonic we're talking about, so it all depends on how much you guys spread the word about this project and how quickly you submit tracks!

Even if you aren't good with mixing, how are you with art? Do you have any expertise instrument-wise? Anyone and everyone can chip in!

On a side note, I'm going to try and make this project a signature. That should raise awareness and help create buzz.

  3. Is it bad that I'm tempted to pick something from Spongebob Squarepants: Battle for Bikini Bottom (in an annoying color that you can't read) as one of my choices? It'd have to be a boss though because there aren't any real Hero themes, unless there's a specific theme in the Dreamworld stage for each character (There's only one theme, but it's technically called "Spongebob's Dream" so I don't know if you could call it a theme for Spongebob...)

I'll have to think over this some more. When is the signing up deadline again?

While I LOVE the music from this game, unfortunately it's more of an Action-Adventure game, and not an RPG. It's basically like Spyro or Ratchet and Clank.

  4. No worries man. It's all good and thank you for resubmitting the sign up list.

Alright, thanks for clearing that up for me.

It's still early but I am amazed we haven't had a single Final Fantasy theme as a #1 pick yet. While I was still preparing the opening post for the compo, I was imagining half the line up being FF-related. I'm not in any way saying we need that much FF in the compo (but I'll take it if that's what people want to run with), I'm just pleasantly surprised by the selection we've had so far.

    Keep 'em coming!

I think the temptation was there, but most of us are choosing more diverse sources so that we can see more potential remixes of our source. I chose Fenix not because I can remix it best, but because I want everyone else to work on tracks for Golden Sun. A subtle nudge.

Speaking of Final Fantasy, are there any rules regarding that series? For instance, can there be one person remixing Kefka from FFVI while someone else does Zidane's theme from FFIX?

  5. I think using presets is fine, but.... using someone else's loops is basically the same as manufacturing inspiration, which is embarrassing to know that an OST like Bastion's could win so many awards and be so loved but just be a combination of public assets. Credit should be given to the people who created the loops that make up the OST. If someone thinks it's fine to use loops.... that's their prerogative... but it is cheating, and also a very cheap way of creating music just for the sake of having music. No wonder I didn't dig most of the OST. You can't put heart or passion into someone else's work before claiming it as your own. It just doesn't make sense. I realize it's not a matter of plagiarism, but it's not much better than that. The legal use of someone else's music.

Not to mention I know people from OCR who could make music from scratch, be inspired, and do a better job. It's not fair at all.

The Apple Loops are royalty and attribute free, meaning that they were created explicitly for other composers to use. Whoever recorded the loop earned their money from Apple already, on the condition that everyone else uses their work. It seems primitive, but for an indie composer you use what resources you have. Expecting musicians to replicate similar sounds, which could cost thousands of dollars, is slightly unrealistic.

Music is a market just like everything else. Some people prefer purity in their composition and arrangement, while others only care for "what sound's nice." The only "winner" is the one that either earns the most success or the one who has the greatest impact on their music scene. How he or she got there does not matter unless plagiarism is involved (ie the whole DBZ Budokai music fiasco).

  6. Darren Korb actually mentioned this on Top Score. Aside from the guitars and a couple other sounds, he was perfectly okay with creating the entire soundtrack using Apple Loops and instruments.

OCRemix tends to frown on an over-reliance of loops, because it displays laziness in arrangement and composition. However, some of the most prominent remixers and artists here openly admit to using default loops. As long as the final product is diverse enough and stands out, no one really cares.

  7. Holy crap it's already been a year.

So at some point last May, I disappeared from the face of the forums, and a few months later stopped being active on the IRC. In case you were somehow wondering where I was (which you weren't), here's the brief update: I graduated and published a book!

That's right, a book! It's a non-fiction analysis of the current economic challenges the United States faces. The book is intended for individuals who may not normally care for political issues, so if you want, take a look and see.

Back to OCR, I hope to be a little more active in the community. I have a new computer for composing, and I'm getting a mike to do vocals and voice-overs. I also have a new place in DC, so I'm willing to host people before and after MAGFest.

So what happened while I was gone?

  8. -Submit at least one ReMix.
    Hahahahahaha! No...
    -Find a part-time job that I enjoy.
Well...I had a great internship. I think I can get a job by next year.
-Lose a little more weight (currently 192 lbs).
178 lbs! I feel better because of it.
-Become familiar with almost all the piano chords.
...kind of? I need to do better.
-Become more organized, using lists, calenders, etc.
    Well...2/3.
-Get an apartment, and partially pay for it (rather than my parents doing so).
It's a psuedo-apartment, but by next year I'll be paying for my own place.
-Finish or start finishing my Senior Project (probably writing a book or a study)
I'm about 1/3 of the way there.

It's been a good year overall. Next year looks better!

  9. For me, it was listening to "video game music" under Last.fm back in the summer of 2010 (before it went pay-to-listen). After hearing some of Project Chaos, I decided to check OCR out, and I've been hooked to VGM ever since. Then there was OCAD... *shivers*.

In terms of getting involved, MAGFest 9's OCR panel was when I decided to join the community. Still haven't made anything noteworthy, but I still hold no regrets (okay maybe a little).

  10. I forgot this thread existed.

I should probably mention/brag that since this summer, I've lost 25 pounds, down to 175-180 lbs. I can only attribute this awesome change to more physical exercise (and far too many sweaty T-shirts).

For me, I find that listening to fast paced music (but not too fast paced) works wonders on my stamina. If there's a song that pumps me up, any tire I had previously evaporates along with the calories.

I hope I continue my trend of exercising. Those muscles don't build themselves. Well they do, but whatever.

  11. Nonamer - Thanks for listing the sources. Also, while Liontamer added the company, the first appearance year, and selected game appearances for the latest 5 (visible) mascots, it doesn't hurt to add those things to your own bio just so we know that you know the essentials about your mascot. Anyway, pointers for Ammy:

    - "once again shrouded in darkness" --> To add to Dafydd's words, if the story of Nippon and god/demon intervention is cyclical, you'll have to establish that more clearly (otherwise having "once again" in the first sentence feels out of place without backup).

    - The 3rd paragraph's 1st sentence reiterates that Amaterasu wards off the evil in the land via Celestial Brush or related ways, so it doesn't feel necessary.

    - I suggest you go a little into Ammy's personality and describe how exactly she uses her Divine Instrument to attack and how she uses her brush to warp reality. These kinds of details will make the picture of Amaterasu more vivid.

    - I agree that "With the powers granted to her, Amaterasu sets out to save Nippon from evil" feels like a better ending, but again, be careful to avoid repetition - you don't want to say that Ammy rids the land of evil both in the end and when talking about her brush powers, and be mindful of the bit about people believing in her (best not to have "...which enhances her divine powers. With the powers granted to her...").

Regarding the "once again shrouded in darkness," it's established

that this exact thing happened 100 years ago. I'll try to work that in, but I'm worried about the beginning running too long.

Again, I'll work on it this evening or tomorrow!

  12. This very first sentence is a little long. It's not really a problem though, and I can't think of a way to break it up without breaking the flow, but you're welcome to try.

    I'll try to reword it.

Is there a connection between the event of her being joined by Issun and her carrying the brush? Otherwise, perhaps "accompanied" would work better than "joined".

As this scene explains, Issun is a wondering artist who serves as a companion to Ammy (since she is a silent protagonist, Issun does all the talking). So you are right to replace "accompanied" for "joined."

Try to find a way to avoid this repetition of "the land".

    Sorry, I'll fix that... :(

It's not like there's a rule that bios should end with cliffhangers, but this last sentence felt like a very abrupt end.

I had difficulty figuring out what to do at the end. So I think I'll just end it with a generic conclusion like "With the powers granted to her, Amaterasu sets out to save Nippon from evil".

Give me a day or two so that I can find the time to finish it.
