  1. I tried to stay away from the original X game, since it's been way too overremixed... I wanted to try new songs.

X2 and X3 have odd soundtracks, most songs being too guitar based (with some notable exceptions though). X4 was a bit meh, not good or bad. X5 and X6 have interesting soundtracks. I didn't like X7's soundtrack and didn't listen to X8's one.

  2. It doesn't sound bad but it is lacking a lot of originality in my opinion.

You basically grabbed the 3 sources, put one after the other with abrupt transitions and then inserted synthetic sounding samples to play the melodies...

The sounds are okay, but it really lacks some innovation, unless it is meant to be a cover. I'd recommend you to experiment with the melodies and, if you're making a medley, to work on a way to actually mix the tracks, instead of putting one after the other without a real connection.

  3. I would have to think about the implications of adding more tracks, because I don't want to have half an album's worth of tracks unclaimed at the end of this. I'd like to have even representation for each of the chapters (1-7 and the Goomba Village part of the Prologue), so I wouldn't add more tracks until I was certain that all of them would be filled.

That said, feel free to voice your opinion on the matter here. I need to be able to gauge interest on the matter, although right now I'm strongly leaning towards no.

Yeah, I understand those concerns. I guess it all depends on how big you plan the project to be (8 more tracks wouldn't make it that much bigger though) and, more importantly, when do you plan to have the project ready.

If we get the official project status, it may be easier to get people, so I think this matter could be delayed until the project becomes official.

Some examples of tracks I miss (and that I'd be willing to tackle!):

    -

: Beautiful track. Not sure what chapter it'd fit in though.

    -

: Mysterious. Could be mixed with the next song:

    -

: Eerie song. Both from Chapter 7.
  4. I started playing piano when I was 12. Obviously, I didn't compose back then. Instead, I played tunes by bands like Stratovarius and Sonata Arctica!

Anyway, I started doing my first "songs" when I was 14/15, using Guitar Pro. They were mainly crappy imitations of my favourite band's styles, so they were crappy lol.

Then I just kept composing, and my song writing started to turn the right way when I started to develop an own style. I've made a lot of songs, and I'm quite proud of a good number of them.

However, they were all done in MIDI, and only on my mind they had decent quality sounds. Only this year I started "producing", thanks to these forums.

  5. Interesting take on the theme.

The slow drums are the what makes this special IMO. As a suggestion, I'd add a second kick in every bar between the second and third beats. I think it makes the drums feel a bit more full.

The strings help the song in avoiding excessive repetitiveness, even though the main theme does get repeated a bit too much without much variety.

I'm also a bit surprised by the fact that you don't finish the main theme with the high note that the original does. It'd be more interesting to use that instead of the descending notes every time.

  6. The mix feels a little off.

I don't know. More reverb maybe? On the piano and strings and all? Maybe a stronger compressor on the strings and piano? Do you have a limiter on the master track?

Overall the ReMix itself is nice, though. :)

I didn't use much reverb on the piano, that's true. But I tried with more reverb and I didn't like how it sounded... Maybe I can blame ReaVerb for that?

All other instruments have a fair share of reverb. In fact, I was afraid I had used too much reverb lol.

I used compression on most tracks, but not really strong ones. I wanted the mix to sound as natural as possible. I also used a limiter to raise the overall volume.

I'm kinda new to this producing stuff, so thanks for the comments!

  7. Plus, writing original music is more fun than writing remixes. Yeah, I said it. So shrug off the fear of "bad" and just go write shit, Fishy :D it gets easier the less you think about what you're writing and the more you just wing it.

Unless you approach remixing as writing original music. If you just grab a source and change it slightly, it'll be boring, but if you try to compose a new song while using a source, then it is as fun as writing original music!

Well, to me at least :pretzel:

  8. Wow, the remix is super long. Your production is always nice (what the hell is Clouddrifter?).

I like the "The Light Spirit Appears" section, it is very beautiful. The Lost Woods before it was good too, but not as impressive.

The lead that starts at 3:50 would be nice with some delay IMO. The transition to the Great Fairy theme was good. The attack on the string pad is a bit too slow, I'd make it a bit quicker.

The bass synth at the 4:50 mark is unfitting in my opinion, it needs to be more mellow sounding.

Like Elder Kirby said, the 6:36 section is uh... not really fitting. I don't the harp that enters at 7:02 is abrupt though. However, it is quite loud, drowning the flute and pads later. The sound at 8:22 (or close to that) is way too loud. The fairy arpeggios get repeated a bit too much too...

The variation at 10:10 is very very welcome. Nice touch.

Overall, a pretty song, similar to what you usually do. However, it is a bit too long and OCR would probably reject it because of its medley-ish nature. I like the first themes on the intro, but the song could just use the fairy themes and it'd have a better chance at becoming posted (I think).

  9. I don't know if it's just me, but the drums are ridiculously loud, especially the kick. The synth bass (or whatever it is, begins at 0:50) sounds a bit weird IMO, maybe drop it one octave.

The part with the strings sounds pretty, even though the whistle sounding sample is a bit quiet. Pizzicato is an interesting choice, but the drums and bass become repetitive by now.

The harmonies in the next section are interesting and give the arrangement a new feeling, but then the drums, bass and guitar kick in doing the exact same thing they've done during all the song...

Overall, the song does what you intended it to do, it is funky! However, at least to me, it feels repetitive and has some balancing issues.

  10. Intro is interesting. I thought you'd go for some sort of arabic remix... I don't really like the drums there though, the pattern doesn't really seem to fit the rest of the instruments and it is pretty dull.

The chiptune section isn't very interesting in my opinion. It seems you just added it there because you like chiptunes. It does become a bit better around the 1:05 mark though.

The ending section still suffers from lackluster drums, and doesn't offer many novelties.

The samples you used are a bit weak too, but that's easily fixable. I'd work more on the arrangement. The intro seemed very promising but then it kind of loses it charms. Drums need a lot of work too, you need more than kick at every beat and the hi-hat sound.

I hope it doesn't sound too harsh :pretzel:

  11. The toy box idea is fun, works amazing for this remix. When you change the tone at 0:21, I feel that you're missing a low note that makes the change more subtle.

Second section seems to be in a very rough form. Not much to say about it honestly. It makes me sad that you dropped the toy box sounds though, it'd be a fun remix if it was mainly toy box based.

P.D. Project tracks are usually not revealed until the project is released. I think you should try to get feedback from the people that are participating on the project...
