Hey guys and gals You know when you're mixing and stuff, and you hit a new level? I hit one of those levels the other day with this mix. Guitars always shit me the most in terms of getting them where I want them, but I'm pretty happy with how they turned up here. Feedback welcome! https://soundcloud.com/tobosaurus/nothing-means-anything-remix I was recording my bass through a pre too, and I think I might've overdone it on the lows. They got out of control in there!

I plug into an Apogee Duet 2. The DAW is Logic 9. Running my bass into a SansAmp Para Driver, and then into the ol' Duet 2 from the box.

what do i do, dan

Interesting... I was wondering whether it might need an amp sim. I'll try that. By "crazy," I mean it seemed to make the sound really unwieldy rather than doing its job of... doing the opposite of that. It would clip sonically, even if it wasn't clipping on the level meter at all.

Hey peeps I'm recording an LP with one of my bands at the moment, and we're gonna do all the raw stuff at home before sending off for mixing and mastering. I play bass with these guys, and was thinking of plugging in through my DI (a SansAmp Para Driver) and then going straight in from that. Is this a good idea? This is what I recorded yesterday using this setup: https://soundcloud.com/tobosaurus/lipstick-buscemi-demo I've been having some issues. I'm not really sure how to set the dials relative to the input gain, and I'm also not sure whether I should use software compression on the bass. I tried this, and it seems to make things a bit crazy. It got me thinking, maybe there is compression already inherent in the signal being processed in the SansAmp?

Been writing some hectic stuff with a sort of 'collective' called Mr. Abyss. This is probs my fave song I have written (although I did not play the guitars on this latest mix). Feedback welcome! Or just enjoy (or not, lots of you are into electronic music and this is not that). https://soundcloud.com/tobosaurus/mr-abyss-the-androecium

Fat, loving it. One thing: Your snare reveals its fake-osity so hard when ya'll do those 32nd blasts at the start. -
Legend of Mana Remix Project - Up and Running Once Again!

Nee-hice. I'm totally happy to zip my shiz up if anyone wants a listen. Please note I am incredibly sensitive and if you say a damn thing about my snare I will come for you. -
Not perfect, but I feel I learnt a lot on this track. Whatcha reckon? No one wanted me to sing, so I put in Lost Highway quotes instead. https://soundcloud.com/tobosaurus/its-been-a-pleasure-talking-to

Haha. Oh man, that song. I'll see if I can't make it 100% even more annoying.

Started playing Deadly Prem. Hilarious. I do really like this song, too. Should I continue? https://soundcloud.com/tobosaurus/derpy-premenstruation-lol

S'cool mang, just tweaking the wires on my snare -
I don't wanna give me myself even more snare neurosis than I have already You know when you get to that point and you don't even know what sound or timbre you're after anymore? Last night I got it to be like a trash can lid. I love trash can lids as much as anyone but how did I even get here. BTW. Killer vids. Thanks.

Well no, not "this." Everyone's advice has been really helpful and applicable and I thank them from the bottom of my pantaloons.

Hot damn the knowledge bombs in this thread

Thanks guys. My guitars may be messing with the snare, definitely. Currently experimenting with parallel compression on the snare's top and bottom mics - it's yielding some interesting results but seems pretty unorthodox and my ass, it does bring out the chain a hell of a lot. I love a good rustle on a cracky snare but this is rattle city.

Hi everyone I'm just finishing up my mix for the Legend Of Mana remix proj, and it's pretty hectic. Most of my stuff is hectic, I guess, and maybe that's why I have so many issues with my snare. I'm finding it so hard to get this thing to snap and pop out of the mix. It's the only thing I'm not happy with. Aside from judicious EQ and distortion and compression and all that basic sort of stuff, are there any cool tricks for this? I don't know, like the "New York method" I've heard about? It's in a metal setting.

That's awesome, thanks mate.

Hey guys. I'm primarily a bassist, but since learning how to work a studio I've started playing guitars and drums and even an Indian flute once (don't ask, better yet don't listen). Naturally I obsess quite a bit over how the bass guitar and the kick-drum interact, because I very much covet their combined punch (huge fan of Sevendust). What I've learnt is that it's hard to get them to play nice! Everything I knew about bass in a live setting means approximately shit in the studio. I hate 1x15 cabs, for instance, but I can't do without them now when I record. I just stumbled over this great article on the subject I thought I'd share with you about it: http://www.residentadvisor.net/feature.aspx?1211

I don't even know, hey. You know how sometimes you get ghosts in your machines? Some weird hiss or crackle that has no precedent? It's like that. It just sits in the studio, too. It only gets riffed on, never gigged on, hasn't fallen over or anything. The output has just been dropping and dropping and now it just barks death into my DAW. Not coping very well. Drinking heavily. -

That missing solo in my Mana piece might have to be fretless bass solo now
