  1. Ahhh... videogame music transformed into ultimately soothing dream trance. This is really good. Everything mixes together, and even though some of the synth textures aren't entirely original, that's bound to happen a LOT, so I can't hold that against this remix. Nice transition at about 2:50 with some nifty log percussion, a neat little breakdown, and some nice flanged synth work. The voice samples really compliment the song quite well, unlike those used in some OTHER remixes. FX are used quite thoughtfully, and nothing is too drenched in reverb or EQed improperly. The dynamics are wonderful, too :o

    Definitely good enough for me.

  2. Okay, just checked into it. This song can't be posted. This song is a remix of a remix of a song that was originally done by T.M. Revolutionary. That song was licensed for DDR, so it is copyrighted by a third-party other than Konami. The remix made by Johnny Desire was also licensed, so even if it was to be played off as something of his, it still has copyright issues. Oh well... :?

  3. Allow me to totally take a little piece of what Larry said, ignore the rest, and go with it:

Yeah, bitches! Larry was trying to ask me some serious questions from radio personality to musician, and you guys were being annoying asses. Should cut back on the chat-bashing a bit, dammit.

Okay, you may resume your normal VG Frequency discussion.

  4. Ooh, this had such potential.

Okay, first of all, the guitar sounds pretty poorly recorded. Sounds like you just about nailed the playing of the song itself, but...

The drums are... well, sad. They sound empty and also poorly recorded. The bass, on the other hand, is pretty good. Don't know if it's synthesized or not, but it sounds good.

Oh, and that synth hi-hat is just so out of place. It sticks out like a sore thumb. Plus, it just kind of stops at a random spot.

This also sticks very closely to the original, which isn't good. Reverb on EVERYTHING. Meh.

    NO

EDIT: Felt I should add a little more as to why I give it a no:

The backing guitar is quiet as hell and doesn't sound completely on rhythm the whole time. The ending is super-duper abrupt. Not mixed and mastered very well at all.

  5. Okay.

    Trance.

    I KNOW, I KNOW...

Anyway, just give it a listen. I do my best to try new things with my trance songs, so hopefully it won't bore some of you guys that much.

Anyway, this is a remix of the battle theme from Legend of Scheherazade. It's an old NES adventure/RPG game. Pretty cool. Sooooo... give it a listen.

EDIT: NOTE: The game name is spelled incorrectly in the ID3 tag. Please change this when you download it.

  6. Hmmm... right away, I notice some issues with quality. It sounds like the EQing could use some work, and there's a high pitched squeal that I can notice quite easily...

This feels kind of empty to me... I mean, the strings don't really fill up much sonic space, and they seem kind of flat. And all of the elements combined seem to leave lots of air in the mix. It's not necessarily bad, though.

The guitar (guitar-ish synth?) closer to the end is really cool. The drum work is original and well thought-out, and the bass is wicked. Ending rocks, arrangement is solid... ehhhhh, more positive points than negative points on this one:

  7. Well it started out icky (General MIDI?), but picked up after about 30 seconds BIG time. I agree with Vigilante that the drums are a bit loud, but not so loud that I'd instantly want to say NO. The arrangement is really really cool, although some sections are pretty much the EXACT same as the original, but the parts that sound like they come right from the Legend of the Mystical Ninja soundtrack are super cool and make up for the afore mentioned ones.

Aaaaand since I'm sure most people aren't familiar with all of the GM tones anyway, I'm going to go ahead and give this one a

    YES

    based on the cool arrangement.

  8. So, uh, is this a DK64 remix or an SSBM remix?

The drums are super dull. Not only are they weak, they also lack variety. Spice things up with some FILLS or something... Also, the arrangement seems to be very similar to the original (aside from the fact that it's two different songs blended together, of course). The big huge kick hit thingy throughout is a bit over-powering, too. All in all, this just seems pretty boring and non-attention-grabbing. Some of the samples don't seem to really fit, either, like the vibes.

Lastly, why do we hear Fox McCloud at the end? Just doesn't seem to... make much sense...

This has potential, but as it is, it's not a whole lot of fun.

  9. Okay, right from the beginning, everything sounds pretty good. The FM-ish synths in the intro really fill up sonic space, and although the strings that come in during this area sound kind of blah on the low notes, it still works pretty good. The violin is really not nice on the higher notes, but oh well. Can't expect perfect samples all the time. The synths, while not entirely original, blend in pretty good. The drums kind of lack variation during the middle section of the song, but everything picks up again later. A little repetitive, but not enough for me to want to condemn it. Sounds pretty well equalized, and the arrangement (besides the previously mentioned repetitiveness) is decent.

Not the best I've heard, but I think the community will like it.

  10. I heard no clipping. At all. Very smooth stuff. This is the kind of stuff that really makes me wonder why Matt isn't already making music for the Metroid games. The textures are really creative and unique, and all the layering is super-thick. Honestly, I don't think I could see anyone OTHER than Matt remixing this song, since Norfair would be kind of tricky to do in any other style.

    Good, atmospheric stuff.

  11. I think Beatdrop needs some new ideas for intros. Many of his mixes seem to begin with wind effects and wind-like atmospheric pads. Examples: CT Ruined Landscape, and that FFMQ Mountain Squaredance "too late" remix thingy.

Haha, you know, it's funny you should say that, because I was just thinking the same thing about a week ago when listening to some of my other songs. I did it on this one, and Ruined Landscape, and then I had crickets in the intro of my Super Thunderblade remix... and I can't remember for sure whose idea it was for the wind in the FFMQ song, but it really makes sense in that one anyway.

Anyway, a couple of things about this remix:

I do agree with some people in that it's a bit sparse, but that was mostly intentional since I wanted it to be sort of creepy and deserted, just like the level. In all honesty, after a couple of weeks while this was on the panel, even I started to wonder if maybe I should have just submitted something better and left this one out, but I've been meaning to do this song for a long time (actually completed another slower version, but scrapped it and started anew after I realized I couldn't figure out how to change it to make it longer and more interesting) and decided to go ahead with it anyway.

I can't remember for sure (and I can't check at the moment), but I think I used some of the default FL4 drum samples because the fit the sound I was looking for (and some of the newer samples aren't all that bad). The synth lead during the faster parts is WASP, the FM synths are all mda DX10 (pretty much the same thing as Fruity DX10, but without the snazzy graphical interface), and that's about all I can specifically remember off hand.

The tempo changes are only a difference of about 15 bpms or so as far as I can remember, but the drums shift into cut time to make it seem a lot faster than that.

Uhhh... and that's about it. I'm not sure (since I can't access my hard drive from here in Iowa :?), but I don't think I have anything really new ready for submission. However, DDR fans might be glad to know that I'm thinking of remixing something from the game, possibly AM-3P or maybe Healing Vision if I'm feeling extremely inspired.

  12. To those of you using FL Studio 4.0 or greater:

Not sure if you've spent any time looking over Dashboard, but it could become an essentialy plugin for almost every song you make. Due to the fact that it lets you construct custom internal controllers, it allows you to very easily automate a whole shitload of different controls on a number of different plugins from one interface. For an example of this, I made an internal controller with it that I call "Quad-Controller." It's designed to allow you to control filter cutoff, resonance, filter envelope attack, and filter envelope decay of four different synths, along with volume and panning of those four synths. This allows you to group all of the automations for the four plugins together in a bunch of patterns and saves you time by preventing you from having to switch back and forth to each synth's interface just to automate them individually. Kind of hard to explain, but check it out and you'll see what good it is:

    http://www.tri-emplem.com/beatdrop/Quad-Controller.fst

Just download that to your FL Studio directory (place it in \Data\Patches\Plugin presets\Generators\Dashboard) and load it into Dashboard through the Presets list.

  13. HOLY CLIPPING KICKDRUMS, BATMAN!

Uh, yeah, this is really really really really badly EQed. The drums totally drown out everything and are just heinous. Add to that the fact that it does follow the original very closely (AND the fact that it repeats like nuts), and that's plenty enough for me to say

    NO

  14. Well, it's getting late, so I'm forgetting how to begin these review things, so I'm just gonna go with the good ol' Good/Bad/Bottom-Line aproach.

    Good:

All of the synth work is really groovy. The bassline at first seems a bit wrong, but after about 15 seconds or so, it just fits.

Even though I recognize some of the drum samples *cough*, the programming is really quite good, so they're used effectively.

I like the arrangement. Even though, like you said, this song was originally short, this three and a half minute remix of it didn't bore me at all, since it progresses to add in more elements as it gets closer to the end.

    No clipping. Always a plus.

Dramatic pause at 1:49 was very tasteful.

    Bad:

Seems as though as it gets closer to the end and more stuff is added in, the song begins to get over-compressed. The drums are nearly drowned out, and the synths get a bit soft.

Maybe a tad on the repetitive side.

Fade ending. I could see something a bit more dynamic being used, such as a big finale type thing since this song still has a bit of an orchestrated feeling to it.

    Bottom-Line:

Although the over-compression does bug me a bit, the majority of the song sounds good to me. Everything mixes pretty well (nothing sticks out), etc. etc. I can see this appealing to a wide array of people.
