  1. Dammit analoq, I love you.

    Er, review, yeaaaah...

This fucking rocks my socks off. It's like a big Doom crossover of Frontline Assembly with Crystal Method. The drums aren't BIG, but they're groovy, choppy, and excellent. The synths are humongous, well chosen/programmed, and all around kick butt. The pitch-shifted ride (at least, that's what it SOUNDS like) adds a crapload rhythmically, and all of the other percussive odds and ends were sweet. Ending was... well... awesome.

God dammit, this is the kind of thing I hate. The song is too good for me to be able to review it all long and drawn out and crap, so all I can say is "DOWNLOAD IT NOW or meet your demise..."

EDIT: 1:35 totally kicks it into high gear as far as the synths go. The big churning pad that comes in is just so sweet...

  2. Larry, I completely blew off the end of Season 1, so I'm going to make an increased effort to help out/participate in Season 2. I'm going to start by making you a new bumper, maybe even TWO new bumpers. I'll get ahold of you on AIM later with more. 8)

  3. I don't remember ever judging the first version, but that's just as well so as to not bias my opinion of this song.

Leeeeeeet's seeeeee... Super stereophonic. Panning and everything is nice, and this song just sounds really full. Lovely. Good work on the EQing and mixing, too.

The sounds are completely great. This song really reminds me of something that this guy on MP3.com that went by the name Enrapture would put out, and his stuff ruled. I think he worked with an EMU XK-6, the same keyboard I've got, but regardless. The piano, the strings, the synths, and the drums all go together really well. The drums all have reverb on them, which is somewhat unusual, but it really works in this case. Groovy.

The arrangement is also cool. This has gone from a super melancholy videogame tune to being a full-fledged ambient techno work of art. The drums seem to be very carefully thought out as far as their role in the song goes, and every aspect of the original is incorporated just as it should be without sounding exactly like the original. Hooray.

    YES

  4. WHAT?!

I missed the last VG Frequency! GOD DAMMIT! AND FOR WHAT? FOR A DATE? SHIT!

Er... wait a second... I had a date...

ARRRRRGH, DAMN MY MIND! IT'S HAVING A TUG OF WAR WITH MY CONSCIENCE! *slams his head against the wall repeatedly*

    Oh, and Kimosabe fucking r0x0rz.

  5. Shadow's completely right and Xelebes is completely wrong in this case. The menu that you see in the image above is the Snap-To menu, and sets what note length FL sticks in by default when you draw a note into the piano roll. One step is 24 ticks, a 1/2 step (typically a 32nd note) is 12 ticks, and a 1/4 step (typically a 64th note) is 6 ticks. 128th notes, following suit, are 3 ticks.

I very very very very very very very rarely use the method of double-clicking on individual notes to fix their lengths. I mess with the Snap-To drop-down menu an average of 5123157628025 times in the making of each song.

  6. Holy, what's going on here? I can't tell if it's the recording itself, or just the way all the sounds are mastered, but something's causing some clipping here. Might want to tone down the bass guitar a bit, it's really over-powering.

The arrangement is strong. I like what you've done with the stage select theme. It really does have a strong rock feel. The guitar playing itself is pretty good, although the hammer-on's don't sound that good at 1:25. Given the the original material, I don't think this could be any longer without being repetitive. Love the ending, too.

Gah, you came so close. Just record the guitar better (sounds muffled) and it's good enough for a YES from me.

  7. Well, uh, it doesn't use any drum loops, but it definitely uses a whole ton of default FL samples. It isn't too bad, actually. The arrangement is decent, but yeah, that piano is horrid. The entire thing could do to have some good EQing done to it, too, as the high end sounds a bit lacking, and the lower-mids seem nonexistent. Some pretty interesting percussion work going on in here, though. Strangely, however, it sounds as though most of the sounds are panned to the right some. *blink*

Anyway, fix that freakin' piano, EQ the entire thing better, and ditch that crappy moaning sound that's panned to the left and is heard at the beginning and end of the song most easily, and then we'll talk.

  8. Definitely some good ideas in this one. Unfortunately they're not executed very well. The repetitiveness in this one is ASTOUNDING. Also, the pizzicato sound is kind of out of place amongst everything else. Hmmm... this song isn't actually half bad, but it isn't good enough to get a YES. The drums are completely dry, and the only noticeable processing is reverb and delay. But jeez, this thing just repeats and repeats and repeats. Barely any dynamic arrangement at all. I do like how you kind of molded the melody to fit the style. But other than that, there isn't much good about this. Nice attempt, anyway.

  9. Hmmm, I'm with Dan on this one as far as the borderline NO goes.

What's really holding this back in my opinion is the fact that it's pseudo-symphony type stuff. Don't get me wrong, the arrangement is perfect for the style, HOWEVER it's the sounds that are really killing it. In order to make anything orchestral and have it end up sounding good, it has to sound realistic, or you better do something pretty amazing with it, and while the arrangement is damn good, it just doesn't cut it when the strings sound as fake as they do here. They're not terrible (ie: I've heard worse), but they don't work. The pizzicato also sounds terribly thick in the lower notes. I almost hate to give this one a NO, but it just doesn't quite make the cut.

  10. Pros:

    Good feel/style

    Sounds are moderately good

    Cons:

    Super short

    Adheres to the original

Drums feel way too mechanical given the genre

In short, this is kind of boring. I could probably see giving it a YES if it was longer and had more improvisation, originallity, and better drum work. As it is, it sounds kind of jazzy, but it doesn't really have much that makes it GOOD jazz.

  11. MAN, THE WANGLESS CALLED IN AND I MISSED IT?

    *shoots self*

Yeah, I was really caught up in GunBound, so I missed the whole show. Sryz, Larry. I'll make it up to you with some exclusive material or something. Also, you played Final Energy? Wtf0ck? Did someone request it, or...?

JPTITTERS (10:08:02 PM): thanks a lot

  13. Completely in agreement with Dan here. The drums are amazingly weak and just seem distant from the rest of the song, and the rest of the song has a whooooooooooole lot of synth brass stuff going on. The bassline is dull, and I really can't hear Metropolis Zone in this one. It sounds like a completely new song... The arrangement's not too bad, besides the fact that the song sounds completely transformed. Everything (except perhaps some of the drums) seems to be panned to the center, too, which doesn't help with the already lo-fi sound this remix has.

    NO

  14. I was kind of worried at first that this one wouldn't do much to the original, but my worries were put to rest. The arrangement here is stellar and, despite some clipping, the sounds and mastering are GREAT. I really like this. It does plenty to prevent it from being boring, and that's saying a lot coming from me when directed at an orchestral piece. One thing that kind of bothered me was that I could hear some of the loop points in stuff like the clarinet, but that's not major enough to sink this one. The arrangement really blows me away, though.

    YES

  15. Hmmmm... sound quality's a bit lacking in this one right off the bat. Also, that organ sounds RIDICULOUS. Gets better after everything else comes in, though. Veeeeeery wide sound, but not necessarily in a bad way. Just sounds very stereo through headphones. This is cool, though. The arrangement is really nice and flows well, and the sounds, while not top notch, certainly work quite well in this. I do hear some clicks and pops, though. The hits and such, which sound pretty cheesy, actually compliment the overall sound nicely.

Another case of more positives than negatives, really.

    YES

  16. Wow, as if we didn't have enough Schala remixes already. I'm sorry, but this one just doesn't do anything really original. The arrangement is practically the original just more drawn out. Not fun. I like the overall sound it has, and the synths are nice, but the drums are anti-good, and all in all I found myself yawning a whole lot during this one.
