I started writing music at the age of 7 – I saw the Looney Tunes cartoon “High Note”, and that got me interested in music, and inspired me to write musical sketches of my own and I started to learn the Piano shortly afterwards. It was then that I also came across the music of Beethoven, Tchaikovsky, Mozart, Strauss and others. While at King’s School Rochester, I taught myself the Organ and was afterwards playing the Cathedral Organ for School services, all the while broadening my own personal education in music (I studied mostly the Sciences in my later years at School.
After I left School, I enrolled at the University of Kent to study for a Mathematics Degree. It was while I was there that I started to compose music in earnest, not just for the Organ, but also a Violin Sonata and Choral works as well. As a Composer, I have been writing music for over 20 years. My compositional output for the most part, especially earlier on, is directed mostly as my own instrument, the Organ.
After composing numerous pieces for the Organ, I branched out and wrote for other mediums, including the Violin, Piano, Cello, SATB Choir (both accompanied and unaccompanied) and most recently, String Quartets.
Upon Graduation from the University of Kent, I decided that music was what I ultimately wanted to do with my life. I had more passion about it than any other academic subject or field of interest; when my favourite music came up on Classic FM, I would just light up and be completely lifted by the music. I then undertook a BMus degree at Canterbury Christ Church while continuing to compose. It was here that I learned more about Compositional technique/styles, as well as a Gold Mine of information in regards to Orchestration, Musical Analysis, Musicology and Conducting. Music History was a major interest too – one of my favourite composers is Richard Wagner, and learning about the history of his Operas was one of the more eye-opening topics I enjoyed. My first Opera performance I went to see was Parsifal at the Royal opera House in 2007, under Bernard Haitink’s baton!!
One element I love about composing is the intricacies of Counterpoint, and I love pursuing and exploring this concept frequently in both Compositions and Arrangements. As a contrapuntal composer by nature, my major interest in regards to composition in this field is developing and expanding fugal and polyphonic music. This is reflected in some of my works, which take the form of several idioms and styles ranging from Baroque to Neo-Romantic/Neo-Classical.
However, in 2011, my musical interests took a massive change. I saw the Nintendo E3 Summit from the (then) Nokia Theatre in LA. It was the special 25th Anniversary of the Legend of Zelda and, being a passionate Nintendo lover, I was completely transfixed by the whole scale of the spectacle, especially the Live Orchestra!! I quickly started going to the Symphony of the Goddesses Concert whenever it came to the UK, and met Irish Conductor Eimear Noone there, the same Conductor who had performed at the E3! It was then that I wanted to become involved in the Video Game Concert industry and make some contribution to music from another great passion of mine: Video Gaming. I had been playing Nintendo Video Games almost as long as I had been composing, and the wonderful worlds of the Legend of Zelda and Super Mario were a huge part of my past. I started playing Ocarina of Time when it was released, then the later games one by one after that, all the way up to the most recent ones: Skyward Sword and Breath of the Wild. When I had been to see the Legend of Zelda – Symphony of the Goddesses Concert for about the third time, I was so impressed and overcome with the whole idea (it is such an incredible idea to take Video Game music, arrange it for Orchestra and then to have it performed as a formal music Concert! It’s a really powerful testament to how important the role of music is in making a good game), that I decided I wanted to be a part of it, but had no idea how to get into the Musical scene. So, I decided to start writing a piece of my own: A Symphonic Poem called “The Creation of Hyrule”, that was part composition, part arrangement of the countless songs and tunes that define The Legend of Zelda Series. It took me just over a year to complete the 55-minute long work. After determining the size and dimensions of the Orchestra, spending months on transcribing the various tunes I wanted to use, and with a few tweaks and manipulations to the score, adding to it a somewhat contrapuntal nature, I succeeded in creating an epic piece of music that told the story of the Creation of the world of Hyrule, and the ensuing story behind the whole of the series.
After presenting some excerpts of the score to the Producers, I was asked to meet their Producer the next time the Concert came to the UK, where I had written yet another piece, a Symphonic Movement for Skyward Sword. This led to me living my dream of providing music that was performed in the Symphonic Concert, and was one of the most fulfilling and joyous moments of my life. I hope that this can be the start of a long and wonderful journey into a magnificent and glorious venture. I am currently working on some more Orchestrations in this vein, which will be elaborated on in due course.
At the present, my aims/objectives include composing/conducting music for Video Game Soundtracks/Arrangements as well as the popular Classical music genres, and also to bring my own music to a wider audience.
