  1. Even as a remixer, I'm always thinking of remix ideas that I would love to do, but could never pull off with my equipment/skills. Epic Hans Zimmer pieces. Cirque du Soliel world music/circus-style pieces. And especially rock tracks. If I had the gear and talent for it, I would have SO many rock remixes on this site already.

Basically, I want to have Sixto at my beck and call.

  2. Video games get better and "easier" as development goes on because people realize they were unnecessarily difficult and frustrating to begin with. These are video games we're talking about here. Games. For fun and recreation. Keyword: fun.

Definitely. And games are also seeming easier to us veterans because we have been playing games for decades. We are very good at them now. Developers cannot afford to cater exclusively to our whims. It would create a huge barrier to entry for new gamers and possibly stagnate the industry.

  3. Every game with a third person perspective and a weapon other than a gun is said to be ripping off God of War anymore.

Perhaps, but this time it's a bit more true. I can play Ninja Gaiden, Devil May Cry, Heavenly Sword, Kingdom Hearts and many others without feeling God of War deja vu. There are enough unique qualities to each of them that set them apart. Dante's Inferno offers a new setting, but so much of the rest feels almost directly pulled from God of War that it's hard for me to ignore.

So they have very similar combat? No biggie.

And they're both set in some type of mythology? I can live with that. It makes for some epic set pieces.

Both feature a big, tough protagonist with a shameful past bent on challenging the gods and demons in their own domains? Well ... ok, but that could describe quite a few video game protagonists.

Fixation on brutality and nudity? Check.

New weapons are taken from conquered bosses? Check.

New magical abilities are bestowed periodically by characters from the mythological setting? Check.

Larger enemies that you beat into submission, mount and then use against their allies? Check.

Quicktime events for epic finishing moves? Check.

Chests (or "fountains" in this case) that contain health and mana which you must button mash to open? Check-ity check check.

I'm not even saying that this makes it a bad game. Their inspiration source may be obvious, but God of War is a game well worth copying. And Dante's Inferno could throw in some very original gameplay ideas further in for all I know. If the reviews are positive, I'll definitely be giving it a rental.

This stuff has been done even before God of War. :P

Obviously. And if I felt Dante's Inferno were ripping off any of those previous games, I would say so. But Dante's Inferno feels so very, very similar to God of War specifically that there's no point to bringing up any of the others.

Also would you believe that I've NEVER played a GoW game..?

Man, you're missing out! Excellent games.

  4. In Seph's video on Learning he specifically said "Games above all should be FUN." So if you're looking at it like that, then by nature you can't really make things like Black Hawk Down (or whatever) because we don't always go to movies or read books to be entertained. Like Malaki said, it's the nature of the medium.

You know, I'm actually beginning to reconsider that statement I made. I feel like it's important for games to continue being the source of entertainment they always have been, but I'm starting to wonder if there might be a place for games that offer other kinds of experiences in an interactive way. The very fact that the interactivity involves you as the player in what happens could give people an entirely new perspective on a variety of things.

I guess I'm starting to think of it like I think about movies: most of them are made to entertain, and I would never want that to go away. But there is also room for other kinds of movies: movies that scare, movies that inform, movies that make you think. I've heard of some indie games that fall roughly into this sort of category. I'd love to see games reach a point where other kinds of games could coexist with the fun ones.

On a side note, thanks for your part in providing me such a great outro. I was worried about finding a good tone to go out on with this slightly-more-serious video until I remembered Passing the Blue Crown. Awesome, awesome remix and a perfect fit.
