Milky Way Wishes: A Kirby Super Star Tribute - History

I'm inherently partially deaf, so yes, that's a possibility. Regardless, I literally can not get higher quality than that in a swf file. 16kbps, 44kHz... CD quality. -

I figured some of you would be skeptical. Heck, I still don't believe it. EDIT: Link removed. see next page. EDIT: Image removed. See next page. EDIT: Ignore the rest of this. See next page. bLiNd's remix, Blue Vision, runs at 160kbps and should be a heafty 5mb. Yet, this file (it contains the whole song) has a 500k filesize. I'll admit I could detect a slight quality loss in... ... interesting, I just tried exporting it "Raw" at 44kHz Stereo. The quality loss I detected is gone and the filesize is the same. *reuploads the file* I swear this program is magic. -

Concering Flash and Sound Compression I probably should have talked about this sooner. Here's how it works. Let's say you've made a 30 Meg wav file <goes through mp3 compression> 3 Meg mp3 file <goes through Flash mp3 compression> 300k!!!! I don't know how Flash does it, but Flash will cut the filesize 10 to 1 without any quality loss from the mp3. Here's the catch: Flash won't compress mp3s with bitrates higher than 160kbps Stereo. Moreover I don't know how it works with variable bitrates (I'm looking into it). Judging from the bitrates of mp3s from Rise of the Star, this could be a problem. There is an alternative however. It's called Raw. This option will not compress the sound at all, and naturally, filesize remains pretty big. Options are 5, 11, 22, and 44kHz. I've been doing some tests for the past hour with Raw compression it seems using it won't impact the project's filesize a much as I feared. At most 20 meg wav files will be 2 megs. I'll continue to look into this. Bottom line is: if you can make your final song at 160kbps or less, you'll shave off a couple megs (per song) from the final project. At this point it seems a seperate album release is definate. -

This could be a problem. It looks great at 800x600, but it doesn't even consume half the screen at 1024x768. I may have to make multiple projects for each resolution. (it should only set me back about 3 hours per extra project though) -

CarefreeCaptain Artists, I found a pretty good resource for Kirby Superstar character references here: http://sprites.fireball20xl.com/NSA/HTML/Kirby/star.htm Also keep the Rainbow Resort sources in mind: http://www.classicgaming.com/kirby/games/superstar/abilities/ Also, KWarp, do you want the artists to draw Kirby in his normal form in the pictures or do you want us to just pick abilities that seem suited to the situation? In Milky Way Wishes, Kirby finds permanent copy abilites on each planet. I think the ones that go with the planet will also go with the storybook chapters. How many of the artists for this project know how to make animated gifs? I was thinking that maybe, if you'd be willing to put forth a little more effort, we could maybe use 2-3 frame animated gifs for each picture. KWarp, will animated gifs work with that flash storybook engine you have going? I could animate jpegs if you ever so desired. The problem is that I have to work around the storybook interface. It gets a bit glitchy if I add in animations. You're better off sticking with static images. Remember, since we're working with storybook pages, all the art is probably going to be at a 3:4 ratio (turn a TV on it's side to get the desired page dimensions). Speaking of which, how big do you guys want the pages to be? I think the demo's 300x400 is way too small for this. (Can anyone with 800x600 computer resolution tell me how much of their screen the demo consumes?) -

Ha! Now that's something I like! Why not have the remixer that's covering the said planet also cover their own version of the Boss Battle theme in the same style? Awesome idea Usa. Keep in mind that these boss themes only need to (and probably should) be a minute or two. A mini-remix per say. -

I may as well toss my 2 cents in. Usa: Great stuff, I really like what you're doing. Keep moving in that direction. Monobrow: This fits the mood very well too. The 2nd half could use some work though. DJBren: I like the direction you're going in, but that's waaaaay too bass heavy to be healthy. It also doesn't seem very exciting at this point. Hopefully you have a plan for that. While I'm at it I may as well spill my ideas as to how the art will play out. These are ideas, not art directions (yet). -In Milky Way Wishes, the start menu has 19 powers. We'll probably illustrate all of those. -I also think each planet/chapter should have it's own illustration. So that's around another 7. -There a couple "movie scenes" at the begining and end of Milky Way Wishes. If possible I'd like all of those illustrated. -We might illustrate the bosses (see below) BIG PROBLEM!!! At the end of every Milky Way Wishes planet, Kirby encounters a boss. Every time, the same boss music plays (the RPG boss has a slight variation though). Now, we have 3 options with dealing with this: 1) Drop the boss battles: I'd rather not have this happen as it leaves plotholes in the story and makes the overal plot a lot less interesting since there's no action till the end. Not a good way to make a project. 2) We have 1 remix of the boss music and play it at each battle: Egh, I don't like this option either. The project will look cheap if we reuse music. 3) Each boss gets their own remix: This option isn't the easiest, but it looks like the best one. Milky Way Wishes has a diverse array of planets, and similarly, a diverse array of bosses. This means there is a diverse array of potential remixes. Among the bosses, Kirby fights Whispy Woods, a whale, Kracko, a chameleon, a temple spirit, Heavy Lobster, and an RPG engine. That should be just enough variety for this option to work. How do you guys (the remixers) feel about this? Whoo... long post. <(; )> -

Whoah, good stuff Oltri. You're in unless Arek objects. I just gave a listen to Marx's theme. It sounds like 3 different time signatutres at once, so it might be in 12/8. I'd like to hear what it sounds like in 3/4 though. -

EDIT: Arek posted at the same time as me. <(; )> Our ultimate goal is to complete this project before the end of the year if we don't encounter any setbacks. I'll leave the WIP dealines to Arek, although we really aren't going to have the project take off until next month due to the fact that various people are on vacation. About Marx's theme, you probably shouldn't go for too dark. I think I'll draw the line at Baby Bowser's (final) theme for Yoshi's Island. Anything darker than that is a little too scary for anyone. -

Hmph... now I have to learn Photoshop of theGimp. Flash can't make crayony graphics. ... how do you make crayony graphics? -

I'd rather do AIM. I've discovered there are quite a few people out there that still don't understand what the point of this project is, so here's the goal explained in the simplest of terms. Arek, you'll probably want to put that at the very top of your first post. I learned something today... Nope. You're way off. The song that sounds like Green Greens is called Later Treasure Hunting, and it ain't in this project. -

*reviews artist list* Whoo, that's huge. I don't think we'll need anymore artists than that. Although, there's one awesome Kirby artist I still haven't contacted. Other than that I think we're set in that department. -

Yeah, the drawing style is quite undecided for now. There's really two directions we can go with that: 1) We can pursue a graphic style similar to Kirby's Dreamland 3. The style here looks like it was drawn by a kid with a box of crayons. It would fit very nicely into the kind of project we're doing, but it's also a somewhat difficult style to draw in. 2) We can stick with the full-color style that made Kirby Super Star so distinguishable. Color here is thick, lush, and very balanced. This is probably something artists would have an easier time drawing considering the source material is in the same style. Personally, I'd lean towards #2 because that's how I like to draw. What do you guys think? -

A winner is you! You're in. Also, not much attention has been given to the plot. We need to talk about that more. EDIT: Usa that WIP is awesome. -

The code is really something isn't it? I was pretty lucky to have found it. It's a bit glitchy if you're not careful though (for example, the text on the cover page disappears when the page is turning). Clicky If anyone else needs an mp3 from the game, talk to me. -

There are two options I've been thinking about for the music and how it will fit into the project. 1) We can make the book scroll along like a movie, and coordinate each chapter in time with its remix. 2) Or, we can give the viewer more freedom to flip where they want to once the text is done scrolling (or before it's done even). They can stick around and listen to the remix, or move through as they please. I'm probably going to fall towards option 2 as I strongly doubt we can write a plot that takes as long to read as an hour of music. Even if we could, most viewers would become really bored by then. All the music from the storybook will probably be released seperately as an album anwyay. There's also the possibility for remixers to make a full song for the album and a shorter version for the storybook. How would you guys (the musicians) feel about that? -

Hello people, KWarp here. As Arek said before, I'm co-running this project with him. Seems like I'll be primarily managing the artisty side of project. Very few details have been worked out with the art it this point, and I'm not about to throw out requirements without hearing what the artists would like to do first. Speaking of which, those who are skeptical about how the storybook will work out should take a look at this Flash Storybook Interface. Arek, can you add that link to your first post as well? Things would be a great deal easier. -

I don't recognize the piece Rellik remixed. What track is it in the GBA Kirby remake? (I have the GBA Kirby tracks on hand) -

3kbps... this is going to be a long download. <(>_<)> *naps* -
I just need webspace. If you can provide webspace that I can directly link to, then I can send the music to you beforehand. I think I'll have to pass on that. One of my Dad's friends is doing me a favor by lending me free bandwidth, and I'd rather not repay that by crashing their servers. Not to mention all the hotlinking I'll have to deal with. Anywhoo I'll shut up. No more posts from me till the project launches.

Allright, when it's ready then. I'll stop being a whining fanboy and talkabout Kirby DS a bit. Speaking of which it's a pretty fun game. Takes a while to get good at though, especiallly those boss battles. As for the music, aside from the menu theme, I don't think I've come across a track that isn't a remix of an old Kirby tune. Also, does hastily downloading the project music and uploading to one's own website count as a mirror?

I'm telling you the best day to launch the project is June 13, Kirby Canvas Curse's release date. JUNE 13th
