  1. I would really like to see more Gunstar Heroes remixes on this site, as the game has excellent music. This mix is rather 'boom-tish' as far as percussion is concerned, and also rather repetitive. I feel that it's not as innovative as it could have been, there was a lot of scope to expand. I don't think that as it is the mix is worthy of a whole 5 minutes, and it's not up to the OC bar imo. NO
  2. Thanks Harmony. Jivemaster! It's been a long time man. This mix is definitely hard-hitting, reminds me of the Battery mix. Love the dark sounds. However I did feel that the reverb was a touch too much on the drums in some of the really intense parts and it spoiled the clarity of the mix somewhat. Not a big point, but I wasn't sure that the the chord structure fitted the melody at the 1.45-1.53 section. Despite these issues I'm gonna yes it. Why? Cause the instrumentation and arrangement are stellar. Jive is back peeps! YES
  3. Strings in the intro sound quite dry, as does the xylophone that follows it. Drum beat doesn't seem to blend with the other instruments, and overall the rhythm sounds rather confused in parts. One gets the feeling that drum loops have been used here and just dropped on top of each other in some sections. More than anything, what lets this mix down is the lack of groove, and that seems to be what the mix was relying on. Not enough original elements, repetitive in some parts, and poor drumwork (or poor use of drumloops more likely). Phaser effects and arpeggiators a mix does not make. I would recommend more practice and making full use of the WIP boards. NO
  4. Hmmm. I really like the way you've arranged this. Nice dynamics, particularly at the end. However, I think that the taiko drums are really loud and overpower the mix. I also feel that the heavy low frequency presence coupled with the dense reverb means that the mix as a whole lacks clarity. The instrument levels need a bit of tweaking. I say resubmit, taking all points made into consideration. I feel that a bit more work will do the mix and yourself proper justice. NO (Please resub!)
  5. Has anyone been able to get this? The link doesn't seem to be working for me.
  6. This might have been unquantized to give it a more 'live' feel, however I do believe that a live orchestra would have done this with tighter timing, elements like the bass cello being an example of the off-timing of a lot of the instrumentation. Bits like 1.37+ fully expose the dodgy string patches. The arrangement isn't really engaging once the main credits theme is finished, not really much original material. The song finishes strongly with some more layers, but it was a case of too little too late. NO
  7. I'm not really one for clapping and stuff like that if it isn't real. But anyway... Love the hardness of the drums, I thought that was great. Some of the intro with the bass and organ sounded really messy, like off-key kind of messy. Nice groove in this mix, although the 'get up' vocal samples were pretty cheesy. The sound is clipping all over the place in some sections, so that would have to be remedied above all else. NO
  8. Nice groove, although overall the mix sounds sparse and underdeveloped. As this has been described as a teaser, I would really like to hear the finished version. NO (please resubmit)
  9. Nice dynamic work in this mix; although the string sounds are not the best, the way they have been used is excellent. This is a conservative mix without a doubt, however there is enough original material and mixing of themes here for me to say YES
  10. Ah, sky sanctuary intro. Nice relaxed groove, we need more of this kinda stuff on OC! I don't listen to THAT much rap, but the rapping sounds a bit like Eminem. Great collab work from both of you! The only issue some peeps may have with this it is that the lyrics don't have much to do with the game. This mix will open the door for lyrics that don't have to stick so close to what the original song was about - and so in that way this mix could be a revolution! YES
  11. Thanks for the responses guys. I'll upgrade later on this year, seeing as there's nothing in 3 that I absolutely must have right now.
  12. I didn't know what to expect when I was downloading this, but I must admit to being pleasantly surprised. Larry's charismatic performance is one of the most engaging pieces that I have ever had the pleasure of judging. An extremely memorable piece that, if posted, will most certainly remain in the minds of OC'ers for a long time to come. YES
  13. I uploaded this to the FTP to make it somewhat easier to access, cause geocities isn't any good.
  14. I know this might sound kinda silly, but is Reason 3 worth it? I don't really need the mastering tools and whatnot, the only reason I would upgrade to it wou'd be the new sounds. Are they banging?
  15. The synth sounds and implementation is really unimaginative, and the drumbeat is really...standard. This doesn't have any personality, and the instrument levels are all over the place. I would recommend spending some time in the WIP forums and developing a personal style. NO
  16. Wow Liontamer has said a lot. Not being one of the guitar expert judges, I thought the into sounded great. I agree with the comment made about the support guitars, making it more up front or panning them would have given a lot more interest to the section preceding the freestyle bit. Really liked the fadeaway ending. It was the intro that really grabbed me in this mix, good stuff. YES
  17. Bit of a dodgy storm sample there, I almost thought it was applause at one point. It's so difficult to find a good storm sample. Anyway... Nice groove. My only reservation about the mix is that I thought that the synth that comes in at 2.28 was too loud. I think this would really benefit from some tweaking in the instrument levels department in terms of that synth. Some judges may find an issue with the low-fi drums. While it might have been nicer to have higher quality drums, I don't think it takes away from the groove of things. I'm gonna put this as a NO, because I think it would do the mix better justice to rework the instrument levels. Although if this version passes I wouldn't have a problem at all, I just think it would do better credit to the mixer (bad grammar? who cares). (Please resubmit)
  18. Ahhh I see. Now straight off the bat I would have dismissed this as being off-key if I hadn't listened to the original first. The question is, should the questionable notes have been changed? It's a stylistic issue more than anything else, and I'm unsure at this point in time how I feel about it. I'll, um, come back to this one later.
  19. This is pretty quirky, and quite an interesting listen. The intro was a little misleading, I thought the mix was gonna have a darker feel to it. I think that the samples were used well here. The fact that this has something quite different going on about it, and all other criteria met imo, this is a YES
  20. Yeah, do it this way. I thought that the strings sounded a bit dodgy at first on their own. I also thought that the way the hats were introduced sounded very awkward, that is, until the main beat came in. I think that the mechanised feel coming from the previous trance version of this was still present in the intro to some extent, that's why I thought the feel was strange at that point. I think this mix was pleasant to listen to once it got into the main section. While this mix is not remarkable in any way, I did enjoy listening to it. YES
  21. Icecap is a very popular tune to remix, and since we have so many submissions of this, and there are two very good mixes of this tune on the site, any mix of it we get has to be something special. So many submissions don't really make many changes to the tune itself, such as this one which is basically a 'boom-tsh' affair, with hardly any deviation from the original. More variety, more original material and a more innovative approach is needed for any Icecap mix that we recieve. NO
  22. The first thing that strikes me here is the instrument placement and mixing which I like very much. I'm not one for heavy metal, so I can't really give a detailed analysis in that respect, but I think this is OC worthy. Was a bit surprised that they ended on a major key! YES
  23. This is a really hard one for me. I did feel that for 4 pianos, this was for the most part kinda empty. From about 1.50-2.30 was a great section, although the transition after that didn't flow as smoothly. I'm leaning towards a no, because there are parts where I felt that it sounded too muddy, others where I thought it sounded sparse, and some where I thought that the dissonance was a little iffy, almost bordering on dischord. Although I enjoyed a lot of it, to have so many iffy points for me is a NO
  24. Wow this is really repetitive. Can't say too much really, because there isn't anything here to captivate the listener. Sparse, bland and empty are just some of the words that can describe this. NO
  25. Loving the way that all sorts of different drum sounds were used here. The mastering really helps things sound tight, and while I agree that the strings and other instruments could have been utilised a little better, I'm feeling a groove here, so it all works for me. The texture changes add to this very-interesting-to-listen-to mix. YES
