OCR01267 - *YES* Final Fantasy 9 'Hunter's Community Chest'
Malcos replied to djpretzel's topic in Judges Decisions
Now it's obvious to me that the mixer here knows what he's doing, but will the rest of oc? I know, I know, who gives a shit what they think, but this could spark off some major bitching. My decision is based on the fact that, while I think that this is an innovative mix, perhaps it's just a bit much to ask the general oc'ers to swallow. (Edit: Removed the no, see below.) -
These hats are sharp indeed. I think over time that he may have mixed these specifically to his speakers. However, that is the only issue I have with this mix, and it's not bad enough for a no, so YES
-
This does have repetitive elements, but I can still hear variations going on here and there that keep me listening. Your instrument definition is lacking, and everything tends to meld together like a blurry picture - an issue compounded by the lack of high frequencies in your mix. NO Not bad, I would like to see this resubmitted.

*NO* Donkey Kong Country 'Deep Blue' *FT*
Malcos replied to GrayLightning's topic in Judges Decisions
This sounds great, I love the whole thing. But the lack of an ending is a big issue - you could have at least finished it with a long note or something? I'm gonna come back to this later. -
What? God.mp3? This had better be damn good. Oh, ok then. Beautiful atmospheric textures. Got a bit weird towards the end, but nevertheless, great stuff. But never call an mp3 God again. YES

*NO* One Must Fall 2097 'Echoes of a Spotlight'
Malcos replied to djpretzel's topic in Judges Decisions
Yeah ditto. It is short but it paces itself well for it. Very hectic, loud and crazy, but it sounds professional. Ish. YES -
"I'll see you when you get there, if you ever get there..." This sounds like Cannon... But oh no sorry this is meant to be from Lemmings. I think this song is just too well known as something else. The intro was near enough half of the actual mix, which isn't really correct pacing considering the length of the mix is only 2.51. I don't think this would add anything to the site. NO
-
Instrument quality is bad, drum sounds not pleasing to the ear. I think more than anything else, the remixer needs to develop their musical ear. NO
-
The piano in this sounded odd, like the sample had just been stretched. The way the strings are being held out in these extra long notes in annoying, especially when they sound like this. When the drums came in, they were really muffled. Add some strange can't-tell-what-instrument-it's-meant-to-be up and down running note arpeggiation thingy, and repeat twice. NO
-
We have a perticularly raised bar for FF mixes, and unfortunately this one doesn't reach that bar. Percussion is in the background, like 1000metres away, dodgy strings, ended suddenly, and was way too short. NO
-
I can hear the subtle variations and developments in this mix, and that's what keeps me listening. It's one of those hypnotic mixes that is the same throughout, and you know it's repetitive, but it still works. However, not everyone will be able to appreciate that, and so I think a rather long bridge section in the middle would do this a whole lot of good. NO

*NO* Castlevania: Aria of Sorrow 'Eastern Quarters' *RESUB*
Malcos replied to DarkeSword's topic in Judges Decisions
I don't think that this sounds over the top, but then again that's me. Much much better than last time. The only problems I have now are the dodgy sounding strings and most prominently I hear some weird note clashes now and again with the low end of the strings especially at the beginning of the song. Percussion sounds crisp. Echoing Liontamer here in that I don't like to reject a mix twice, but please take into consideration all that has been said here. NO -
Nice production quality, I like the way the theme tune came in half way through. Very good original part for the first half. YES
-
*NO* Sonic & Knuckles 'Machine Gun Hedgehog' *FT*
Malcos replied to Protricity's topic in Judges Decisions
I like this mix, but I really think it needs two things. It needs a breakdown of some sort to change the texture for a bit, and this sounds very muffled, the synths need to be somewhat more crisp. Then I would definitely give this a yes. NO (Plz resubmit) -
1. Die Hard Trilogy 'I Love The Airport' Don't hear any difference from the original in this one really, apart from the drumbeats. YES 2. Ys 'Beat of Terror' This is like an upgrade of the original. YES 3. Command & Conquer: Tiberian Sun 'PharoTeknical' Very well produced, but too similar to the source. YES 4. Streets of Rage 2 'Funkdreamer' I did like this one, but I must be objective. This is in the same style as the original, and has too similar a groove. There is the saxophone section that is original, but I'm not sure if it is enough. YES 5. Donkey Kong Country 'Strolling The Mines' This doesn't really add anything to the original, doesn't mix it up. Not an easy one. YES 6. Usagi Yojimbo 'Homage to Amida Buddha' I'd say this is a keeper - there are lots of little touches in the background if you listen really carefully, and the guitar features quite prominently in this mix. The SID track is so sparse it would have been blatantly obvious if he hadn't added quite a bit to it. NO 7. F-Zero GX 'Dr. Stuard (Jeff & Toad Air Team Challengers)' Wow this is almost exactly the same. YES 8. Earthbound 'Dreaming on Distant Shores' Well there wasn't much to go on here, but I think it's still recognisable, particularly because a similar sound was used. But there wasn't much source to begin with. Good remix, this. NO

I like the smooth vibe of this, very good for almost no experience on Fruity. However, I found that the sound quality and arrangement were lacking somewhat. With some more work on sound choice and with some punch added to that kick, this could have been a yes. But as it stands, NO
-
I like the piano breakdown parts a lot more than the uptempo bits. There is something quite important missing here, and that is a kick drum. I know it was deliberate, but I find that it takes a lot of energy from a mix. The ending - what ending? I had to check my winamp because it just stopped suddenly. While this may pass, it doesn't work for me at all. NO
-
For me this is a no. It has some interesting areas, but in the end, it is missing the X-factor. It just fails to capture the listener. There is a lack of energy, plus the fact that I really don't agree with the choice of the lead synth. NO

*NO* Kirby's Avalanche & Kirby's Dream Land 3 'Kirby's Wave'
Malcos replied to djpretzel's topic in Judges Decisions
I'm very boderline on this one. I would give the mix a no before 2.42, everything after that seemed to flow a lot better. The bassline seems somewhat overpowering in this mix, although the effect is not so evident after 2.42, because of the quicker note changes. I would say work on your instrument levels - as it stands it takes some hard listening to get into the depths of this mix. Needs a little more variation in th first half as well. This is almost there. NO -
*NO* Final Fantasy 2 & Final Fantasy 10 'Running is Not an Option'
Malcos replied to djpretzel's topic in Judges Decisions
When I listened to this, I just thought 'yeah, this sounds fine'. And that's it. Whilst not being very innovative, I thought it was mixed well and sounded good - good enough to stand on it's own, and I have no reason to reject it. YES -
Unfortunately, I can't really hear much of Metroid in this, although I will say that the dnb was good, if not slightly repetitive, taking the genre as a whole into account. Needs more metroid elements to remind the listener what they are listening to. NO
-
*Reads above* This starts to get good about half-way through, up till that point there's not a lot going on here. The sound quality is good, and it has been well mixed, etc. This would go well on an official arranged version of the sonic soundtracks - and I think that that may work against it. The only question in my mind is whether this is different enough from the source. Well there is that huge original bit (1.34-2.09) so I guess I'll give it a YES
-
*NO* Unreal Tournament 'Progressive Phantom'
Malcos replied to djpretzel's topic in Judges Decisions
This mix has taken an UT track that was quite a hard one and just softened it up a lot. Very weak and the percussion was extremely soft. For me, this just doesn't suit the track or the game. NO -
The intro in this made me anticipate some really high-energy stuff, but it just didn't happen - giving this a somewhat anti-climax feel. The low frequencies are muddy and so the piece doesn't sound defined. NO
-
Still want me to vote? Ok... It's obvious that this mix is over-reliant on the drums. Not only that, but there are eq issues as well. I do think that with some more work this could be pulled off. I recommend a resubmit, with more variation interms of instrumentation, and with some work done on the sound levels. There is something here. NO
