  1. I just wanted to mention that it doesn't really matter if you make money at it; you should still pay for it if you use it. The try-before-you-buy idea is a great one that i frequently enjoy the use of, but if only the people who made money with the programs paid for them the industry would be financially screwed.

Most of the people using the software are hobbyists, like 95% of the users on here; sure the companies like to highlight the fact that pros use their software, but thats hardly their core demographic as far as sales go.

  2. Truthfully, I have only illegally pirated one piece of software: the Waves Diamond bundle, but I felt so bad about it since I absolutely LOVE the product and use it all the time that i bought one of their lower-end bundles (cuz I don't have the 2 grand needed to pay for the diamond bundle). Well, I had such a horribly shitty time getting it to install properly and not fuck up a bunch of stuff in the process that I felt that using the cracked version was worth the 700 bucks i spent. So yes, I am currently using a cracked version of the program i bought because it runs better... Go figure.

However, the people that are using all of the highest end products on the market that haven't paid for any of it should go suck some poo. I have literally spent thousands of dollars for all of my software and hardware and have all of the boxes on my shelf as trophies of said monetary suicide. Truthfully, I think thats part of the experience of music; working your way up from shitty software to better and better pieces of musical equipment to the point where you can do anything you want after years of wading through the stuff you've bought to help you out.[/self-righteous rant]

All-in-all, pirating stuff isn't the way to go if you want to establish yourself as a producer in my humble opinion.

  3. I like the bassline a LOT, very grungy and sexy low-ends. Very minimal arrangement, I would add a bit more to it like pads and the like, but I tend to be a bit more... maximal? in my arrangements, which can be super annoying to master. I would suggest compressing the drums a bit more to make them sound a bit more heavy to go with the bassline. I may also suggest layering your synths a bit to make them stand out. Otherwise, this is pretty fun to listen to and should pass once its filled out a bit more.

  4. heh, yeah, this is VERY rough so far. I only just started playing around with the various main themes in the song and this is by no means indicative of the arrangement and/or final mix-ness. As for the house comment; Its kinda gonna be a bit more house oriented than I had first done and possibly a bit more breaks/house later on. I'm really shooting for a Junkie XL in "Today" "Mushroom" and "More" vibe with a bit of a "Cascade" (from Hybrid of course) atmosphere to it.

So basically, i'm gonna shoot for around 5-6 minutes in length with a bit more atmosphere and more synths and effects and much more fleshed-out guitars. I only spent about 3 hours from start to finish on that little wip (which is astoundingly quick for me, especially since my comp loves to lock-up on me now), so there is definitely more to come on it. Thanks for the feedback; much appreciated and definitely needed :D

What do you think of the guitars? too chromatic? or too inaudible?

  5. This is freaking awesome! Very chill and ambient, yet feels very much like a MarioKart song. The only little quibble I have with it is that the drums kind of sound distant and some of the other pieces feel a bit too background-y even though they're supposed to be foreground-y. Not a big deal in the slightest; I'm just nitpicking. I definitely think this will get passed as-is and will probably be one of my favorite ReMixes for just lounging to.

  6. This is pretty dern awesome! I like the solo female vocals and that beginning lil distorted perc bit at the very beginning of the break out is quite awesome. Very good feel overall, but I would say that adding a bit more punch to the percussion would help it feel more powerful. Otherwise, i can't think of anything else I would fix though. Good schtuff.

  7. This is some sexy shtuff. It is definitely reminiscent(grrr, sp) of Nobuo Uematsu's kind of battle theme styles and some of his other theme's styles. Very good stuff, and i think the instrumentation is fine for an OST of a sprite-based game; personally, i think it would be weird to hear a very well-done sweeping score alongside crappy sprite characters in sprite forests outside of a sprite town named spritesville. Thats just me though.

  8. They only stole the registration book...

Like, I'm glad they didn't steal more, but its kinda creepy that that is all they took. There was a nice jacket, CDs where they would have brought there head in to get the book, a turntable (pretty ghetto, but still) and plenty of other stuff in my messy car that they could have taken.

WTF? Anyone know why they would do that?

  9. I have the problem where the audio cuts out. I'm actually pretty sure that its the RAM load on the computer. It only happens to me if there is a lot of STREAMED audio, not necessarily the CPU load (from synths and such). If that isn't the problem, then someone could definitely save me a LOT of time and effort by telling me what is wrong.

  10. It really is a shame he had to die. It was also quite a shock. I remember seeing the Batman trailer and saying to myself, "I can't wait to see him in other roles later on down the line."

I have heard that he was half way done on another production as star that had to stop filming... Which really sucks for the people involved with that as well.

  11. I totally agree about what was said about not trying to write exclusively OCR-based stuff. My abilities grew exponentially when i finally stopped trying to do OCR stuff and just played around and made little original songs. You can be pretty surprised at how well you can make a song by just fucking around.

As for inspiration, I usually go out of my way to save up for some music goody that I've been wanting for a while and then splurge for it. If you concentrate on the new tech and try to use it to the best of your abilities, it can usually completely recreate how you think of music. I recently purchased Colossus and then went to make what I now consider my best song using mainly the samples in it.

For me, experimenting with my library and layering sounds can usually give me incredible amounts of inspiration. Linked to that; I don't know how you mix, but if you use loops and pre-made stuff, just go out of your way to create something like what you would use a loop for out of your own layered samples. That gives me a lot of inspiration and makes me prouder of the songs i make.

Also, I think your bigger problem might be that you're trying to submit trance music to OCR; trance music has to be incredibly well-produced and varied enough from the trance-standard arrangement to even be considered. For a lack of a better analogy, its like being the star of a high-school team and then competing at the Olympics. Try making music out of your comfort zone that doesn't really adhere to any standards other than a simple arrangement base. Even if you absolutely love trance/techno and are not so keen on other genres, making something like happy hardcore, country, or rap (ewww on all for me) can at the very least be fun and you can see music from a totally different perspective.

    Hope this helps!
