  1. btw there might be more to gandrayda than we thought

    http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=aRCAWbLVqhY&NR=1

They totally missed the joke concerning the "Wii Format" - ^H was what DOS wrote if you pushed the backspace key, so it's a joke similar to putting a strike through formatting on a text block.

So "Wii Format^H^H^H^H^H^H^H^H^H^H" would be like someone typing in "Wii Format" then trying to backspace it out - an obscure nerd culture joke.

  2. Overall, though, I'm pretty pleased with the game. Also, did anyone else catch the two GF Technicians talking on the Olympus about that rebellion? I forget what they called it, but I certainly smell prequel off that piece. Frankly, that would be fuggin fantastic.

I remember that now! I thought they said the Horus Heresy. Like, from Warhammer 40k? Maybe they didn't, but if they did, it's a funny reference.

  3. That doesn't make them any more creative. All the riffs shown in the video are really cool, and they are what makes the actual songs good. DP didn't make them, or even really build on them. :(

Exactly my qualms. It's not that they sample - a lot of great musicians do that, and it can be very enjoyable. But DP can just take a song from the 70s/80s, slap a vocorder, some filters, and a bass beat on it, and release it and sell millions. D: The worst part is that people don't realize they're being "ripped off" in some form. Thomas Bangalter is the master of this over-sampling - he's made a career out of for this for quite a while (and not just from DP - guy has god-know-how-many pseudonyms for music-making).

really, Daft Punk doesn't do sampling any more than Moby, Chemical Brothers, Prodigy, or any big player in the electronic music scene.

sampling is part of the art. if you weren't expecting what you saw in that video then you do not understand electronic music.

I really have to disagree. I've been big fans of all the groups mentioned (including Daft Punk) at one time or another (but currently am not, so I have no reason to defend these artist), and I really feel like DP goes way outside normal artist limits in this. When I listen to those other groups, I can hear the samples, and they're tasteful. They compliment an original song. But DP doesn't do that. It sounds like they start with the sample as their base. They build from that, and it shows.

Sorry, kind of a rant. But I can't understand how people defend them in this - it's not creative or artistic. OCR does creativity - to take a song and completely re-imagine it. DP does something totally different, and in my opinion, inferior.

  4. I name my harddrives after elements. Currently I have Cobalt, Sulfur, Iridium, and Tungsten.

I like this idea a lot, for some reason.

My old C: drive was named "Grey Matter" until it died (the new one doesn't get a name except "Noisy"). My F: drive was named "External" for a while, until I renamed it "Euler" - for it's good memory, of course.

If I named my computer, it'd be "Mens apparatus" - thought machine. Or something equally as nerdy.

  5. Vortex.

Be sure to suck the energy in with the charge beam, and hold it. You might be missing the energy, not because it drops, but just because it is hard to see. I don't remember what, but something else in that fight can drop energy too.

I think it's the vertical beams - when the rocks break off of the ground, then land and smash, I think they drop energy. At least, I found some energy orbs after he did that attack.

You know those 5 classic notes that play every time Samus exits her ship onto a new world? I want a little speaker that plays that every time I get out of my car.

I lawled. Maybe when you get out of bed each morning? (ie, load a saved game)

  6. god people that frickin boss ain't that hard

I know, I feel silly for having trouble the first time. I came back to it, beat him with plenty of energy left.

Vortex - take it slow. If you don't have enough energy to use Hypermode safely, just wait until he uses the grabby hands on you - shoot them to get some energy. Also, you know can get energy from the orbs when we goes to replace them. The basic pattern is:

    • work on a single orb (follow it when he swaps them around) with the power beam rapidfire.
    • Once the orb is destroyed, shoot at the glowing phazon orb there in Hypermode.
    • When he gets his shoes, wait until he charges, then go morph ball and blow his feet when he stops at the far wall.
    • Repeat steps 1-3 for the other two orbs on his front.
    • Once he loses his shoes for the third time, he'll focus more on charging you. Dodge around him and shoot the orb on his back, then overload it from hypermode like the first three.

Like I said, if you're low on energy, don't rush. Get energy from the orbs and from the hands. No hurry. I had four or five energy tanks when I did it - you're not missing anything major.

  7. I just got past it - I don't know what I was doing wrong. I basically followed the same strategy that I was before (but I handled the morph ball sections a little better). I think it was just one of those things that you just have to take a break from before you can come back and do it easily.

I did the orbs one at a time. Hypermode took more out of my energy tanks than the boss did, obviously. He was kind enough to use his grabby hands a lot, which drop a lot of energy. I did run low enough on energy to not be able to activate hypermode when trying to overload the orb on his back, but I was patient enough to power back up to two full energy tanks before enabling it to kill him.

I think Veteran is about the right difficulty (for me at least). Difficult so I don't breeze through, but not so much that I can't play without getting frustrated.

  8. halp people? plz?

    [spoil]

I'm fighting the Mogenar in the Bryyo Seed (on Veteran)... anyone have any pointers to make this fight more fun than a kick in the balls? I've tried three times already, and I'm really frustrated with it. It wouldn't be so bad if I didn't have to use nearly a whole energy tank per orb to overload the Phazon - and that's if you get it perfect. Half the time, he'll just shut the cover on it and you end up having to discharge it because you waited too long. Giving an energy tanks per orb leaves me not enough energy to account for the misc damage I take just fighting him. D: Also, any tips for blowing his "shoes" off? I take horrendous damage trying to do that, from getting hit by his shockwave to running up against/getting trapped between his feet.

    [/spoil]

So, thanks. I'm not totally sure Veteran isn't making it a little less fun to play this awesome game.

  9. iGOD DAMN SHRIEK BATS

I WANT TO SCAN YOU. SLOW DOWNemot-mad.gif

I just got to that part (where you get the map for the first "real" planet - after you leave the space station). Annoys me. Still haven't got their scan. D:

    menu theme????

uh am i the only one that thinks this game has one of the best menu screens like ever

i know it doesnt mean a ton but i LOVE the menu screen

I went into the options to change my A and B functionality* on my first file and the music actually hooked me (with the little critter in the background).

    * I was expected to hate the "B is not fire" scheme (it's a trigger!), so I changed it from the default, but after playing for five minutes, I had to swap it back to "A, fire; B, jump" way. I'm trying to figure out why it's more comfortable - Red Steel and everything else shot with B... Which scheme do you guys use?

Oh wow, if you start a new game over a completed one you keep all of your scans. Definetly better than rescanning every little goddamn thing that pops up.

Niiiice. I'm still being a scan-whore. I like the deeper background you get from it, but I'm not going to overdo it this time through. (Playing on Veteran on my first playthrough).

  10. A few months ago I was thinking a strange thing:

would be funny if after that you eat a great quantity of food, the character become fat, like on Metal Slug...

Every type of food can have a value of fat-ness (I don't know the correct word, sorry) and vitality...

    It's a mad idea, I know...

Goddammit. Tarma for Brawl 2008. (Yes, yes, I'm passing Marco over for Tarma. No comment.) I want at least one other third-party character other than Snake - and not Sonic.

But neat idea - slower moves, lower jumps, but increased power/damage and less knockback. Bumping up your character a weight class, as it is. Similar to the metal power-up, but more awesome.

  11. RD, I'm not going to quote that entire post, but I will say that I agree with about 95% of it. You really hit the nail on the head, from the economics to the design philosophies.

A good read - I guess those are a lot of the reasons why the Wii is "winning".

  12. I'm no expert about chicken raising, but the game points out that KFC de-beaks their chickens. Isn't this so they don't peck each other to death?

I don't like PETA either, but I like Nintendo being reasonable about lawyer-ing more, so I can't say I wish that Ninty'd sue them. But I'd be great if PETA just... disappeared one day. Or at least stood back and re-evaluated their stances. But yeah, that's gonna happen. :|

So the real point is that people enjoy making shitty flash games but don't like having original ideas. They also like making political statements. I like that people are actively taking stances in political issues (voter apathy is silly - I like seeing people at the polls), but I guess it has to come at the cost of everyone spouting off their beliefs whenever they open their mouth. It's becoming more and more common to see people who can't talk without injecting something political in conversation. D: It bothers me, sometimes.

So, totally offtopic post? NO. But close.

  13. I don't care which clone they bork - we only need one extra-gravity-affected space animal with a laser, right? Who's used more in tournaments - Fox or Falco? IIRC, I've seen Fox more.

Silly Friday update. Sakurai usually gives us something strange to bicker over for the weekend.

  15. http://douweosinga.com/projects/googlehacks

I found this one to be the most fun to mess with. It takes your initial term (three to four words) and searches Google for the next most probable word. It removes the first word from the term and repeats it, basically writing out what the next most likely word is each time.

Here are some of mine, with what the initial term was in bold:

(was listening to a zircon-tefnek song)

"zircon is a natural part of life."

"tefnek is a blast, for- a Good cause/ By the Board of REGENTS is the governing body. of the World, s Most expensive Desserts."

"djpretzel is a human right, which is the Better Alternative to Microsoft Office Project Server Unleashed/ dp/ k"

They also provide some weird personal issues:

"The clone army is the main force behind the creation of the state of the Union Address on Tuesday, night: I ll be gone For a while but I m at your page, right now I m naughty- Naughty SWEDEN! HOLLAND! germany/"

"Whether or not I should have thought, of that before we kissed"

But some are just plain weird:

"The emperor is naked: and wet. in the city. is a Rising senior at the University of the Pacific. is a dramatic monologue is a speech disorder is an illness that can be- used- to_ doing something. useful."

"the integral of a function is a function of the_ Orgasm is not the Answer The answer is in the air/"

  16. People... You're thinking about the little animation from the Nintendo World 2006 video? (about halfway through, right after ZSS is introduced)

It's just an idle animation. Different moves just utilize the gun or whip functions. There's no need to make this any more complicated than it needs to be. Occam's Razor.

EDIT: I'm more confused by this:

"Moves like that can be pretty thrilling. And it’s not exclusive to Zero Suit Samus... Other characters can do it, too!"

Others can do it too? Uh, how? Does he specifically mean the Plasma whip latch on? (like, ZSS's gun becomes an item - kind of like the armor when it falls off.) Or just that there will be moves/an item that has a similar functionality?

  17. So I finally got my car speakers fixed, after a long period of crackling (and static when the CD player was really quiet). Anyway, I realized I have some really nice bass in my car, so I'm looking for some songs to... "showcase" this fact. I don't want some mindless IDM or anything like that. Something with a groove. Think... Take California by The Propellerheads as a jumping-off point. I wouldn't mind them being from OCR, either.

I have a few songs already (but not enough), so recommended your favorites. :D I haven't added any new blood to my listening music lately.

  18. I think I wet myself a little watching the Aurora vid. I wanted a Mother Brain fight since the Parasite Queen fight at the start of Prime 1. Multiple MBs? Mmm. Tasty.

Also, nice surprise to find out that there are two more vids coming down the pipe soon. Looks like they're releasing one gameplay video and one storyline video in each batch.

I like the way Nintendo is treating their big name games - Smash Bros. Dojo with frequent updates, MP3 with this preview channel... The frequent updates is a nice change from Nintendo keeping us in the dark up until launch day.

  19. I saw the run this morning, before I saw this thread...

It's fun to watch, but I almost like the

by them better. It's funny to see the ways he just grabs stars with no warning. Cool Cool Mountain was fun to watch, especially Wall Kicks Will Work, since he totally bypasses all of the level. :D

Although the new 1 star run is awesome, since it distills the run down to just about Bowser-only levels, which are probably the most fun to watch. I'd have to recommend watching the older (longer) runs by them - Swordless Link and AKA, that is - since there's more funny tricks and game abuses involved.
