LordGavin
This remix was actually done a while back. Considering it's age (I was still very new to remixing at the time) I decided to polish it up a bit before uploading it. Either way, take from it what you like. Above all, enjoy. - - - Song: "Brinstar Overgrowth" Game: "Super Metroid" Remix By: Gavin MacLean Midi Basis By: Jay Reichard Listen to it here! Download it here! Rozovian
Doesn't sound successfully polished. Work on your production ears, learn to tell what's wrong with your mixes yourself (and save the difficult stuff for others to help you with). Play your mix next to some well-produced track, listen for how they differ (besides the obvious, like sound design, key, and stuff). Here's a handy checklist for common problems to help you home in on what might be wrong with it: ARRANGEMENT / INTERPRETATION[ ] Too conservative - sticks too close to the source [ ] Too liberal - not enough connections to the source (too much original writing) [ ] Too much direct sampling from original game audio [ ] Borrows heavily from non-source material (eg. a theme from a movie) PRODUCTION [ ] Too loud [ ] Too quiet [ ] Low-quality samples [ ] Unrealistic sequencing [ ] Generic/cliche sound choices [ ] Drums have no energy [ ] Overcompressed (pumping/no dynamics) [ ] Mixing is muddy (eg. too many sounds in the same range) PERFORMANCE (live recorded audio/MIDI parts) [ ] Timing not tight enough [ ] Wrong notes, general sloppiness [ ] Poorly recorded [ ] Bad intonation STRUCTURE [ ] Lacks coherence overall (no "flow") [ ] Not enough changes in sounds (eg. static texture, not dynamic enough) [ ] Pace too plodding [ ] Too repetitive [ ] Too short [ ] Abrupt ending
SuperGiantRobot
Obviously I'm no expert in these matters, but the drums at least need some beefing up.
Cyril the Wolf
Needs more kick drum. Also, there is this ridiculous low end drone that's happening like that's amazing. If you can keep that but still have a successful kick drum, that would be bad ass.
LordGavin
Thanks for the list, Rozovian. Should be of some use to me, especially if I fall into a more difficult project. Though your feedback this time isn't directed towards anything in particular, so I'm unable to know what you find wrong with it. Concerning the drums, I actually did beef them up quite a lot, but to blend them better to the song I reverbed them the slightest bit. In doing that, I did notice there strength die a bit, but they had already been so improved upon I didn't realize it wasn't "enough". Whatever, that would be a simple fix.
